Doctor J. H. Thornwell, III Born at Concord, N. C.; grandson of Doctor J. H. Thorn-well, I, son of Doctor J. H. Thornwell, II, and Florence Earle Thornwell; moved to Fort Mill, S. C., when only a few months old; received grammar and high school education in Fort Mill and Rock Hill; was graduated from Presbyterian College of South Carolina, Clinton, May, 1903, with A.B. degree; Principal Mount Zion Institute, Winnsboro, from 1903 to 1907; Superintendent Mount Zion Institute from 1907 to 1917; Assistant Secretary of State, Columbia, 1917 to 1919; Superintendent Harts-ville City Schools, August, 1919; awarded degree of Doctor of Literature by Presbyterian College, commencement, 1934. It is with a great deal of pleasure that the Class of 1934 records the fact that our beloved Superintendent has been made Doctor of Literature by his Alma Mater. No school man in the state is more worthy of this distinction than he. He thus “carries on” the Thornwell tradition in South Carolina—Doctor James H. Thornwell sounds perfectly natural; and it is fitting that he should be so called, for he has the qualities of character and scholarship that are requisite to such a degree. Doctor Thornwell, we are proud of you; we are proud of the fact that our school can claim such a man as you for Superintendent, and we hope for you many years more of usefulness in our community and state.
