Carrollum Forum OFFICERS Bratton Davis ......................... Barbara Kalber ........................ Margaret Durrett....................... Jane Gilbert........................... Miss Ruth Carroll ..................... .....President Vice President .....Secretary ....Treasurer ......Sponsor One of the outstanding clubs at the Hartsville High School is the Carrollum Forum. It was organized several years ago for the purpose of creating interest and enthusiasm for the study of Latin and to instill in the students of the school as well as in the entire community the real worth and value of this language. The members of the club are pupils of the third and fourth year classes and a few of the second year pupils who make a required average. The members of the Carrollum Forum, faculty of the High School, Latin students of Coker College, and other invited guests assembed May 28, 1933, for their annual Roman Banquet. The large gymnasium of the High School was converted into a Roman Hall and a very interesting program was carried out. The prayer to Jupiter was given by Jack McAlpine. Next the banquet was served in Roman style, the president, Katie Coker, announcing the courses. Between the courses the slaves brought perfumed water to bathe the hands. No article of food ab ova usque ad mala is honored with a place on the menu unless it had been used by the Romans. Talks were made by Superintendent J. H. Thornwell and Dr. Carlyle Campbell, president of Coker College. Two plays were given by members of the tenth and ninth grade classes, namely, “Medicus” and “Rome and the Modern World.” Those taking part in the plays were: Floyd Chitty, Fora Coker, Charles Gibbes, Lee Manning Wiggins, Mr. S. P. Coker, Margaret Durrett, Maria Powell, Robert Evins, Wallace Smith, Lawrence Gibbes, Flora Lee, Mary Parish, Joseph Wiggins, Barbara Kalber, Jane Gilbert, Bratton Davis, Billy Byerly, Ruth Marie Carlyle and J. T. Alford. Mr. Hungerpillar, principal of the High School, presented to Grace Smith the Vergil Medal. Page Twenty-eight
