M V H- H- s Hartsville High School The Retrospect 1934 PUBLISHED BY SENIOR CLASS of HARTSVILLE HIGH SCHOOL HARTSVILLE, S. C. Dedication Because he has renewed our faith in the ideals of our greatest Presidents; because he has restored our confidence in our nation’s leaders; because he has shown the youth of America possible opportunities for achievement; because we respect him and love him, the Senior Class of 1934 dedicates this volume of 7 he Retrospect to our President Franklin Delano Roosevelt Page T wo Franklin Delano Roosevelt Page Three Doctor J. H. Thornwell, III Born at Concord, N. C.; grandson of Doctor J. H. Thorn-well, I, son of Doctor J. H. Thornwell, II, and Florence Earle Thornwell; moved to Fort Mill, S. C., when only a few months old; received grammar and high school education in Fort Mill and Rock Hill; was graduated from Presbyterian College of South Carolina, Clinton, May, 1903, with A.B. degree; Principal Mount Zion Institute, Winnsboro, from 1903 to 1907; Superintendent Mount Zion Institute from 1907 to 1917; Assistant Secretary of State, Columbia, 1917 to 1919; Superintendent Harts-ville City Schools, August, 1919; awarded degree of Doctor of Literature by Presbyterian College, commencement, 1934. It is with a great deal of pleasure that the Class of 1934 records the fact that our beloved Superintendent has been made Doctor of Literature by his Alma Mater. No school man in the state is more worthy of this distinction than he. He thus “carries on” the Thornwell tradition in South Carolina—Doctor James H. Thornwell sounds perfectly natural; and it is fitting that he should be so called, for he has the qualities of character and scholarship that are requisite to such a degree. Doctor Thornwell, we are proud of you; we are proud of the fact that our school can claim such a man as you for Superintendent, and we hope for you many years more of usefulness in our community and state. Even though they practiced hard and fought to the end, they were defeated in their first two games. However, the loss was not discouraging and the girls continued their daily practice. The Sweethearts were very enthusiastic about the Tournament games in Orangeburg and proved to be good sports throughout their entire stay of three days. The last night which was Saturday, revealed much to the students of Hartsville High School, the town of Hartsville and the spectators—The Sweethearts of the Pee Dee were champions of the Class B Schools in South Carolina. Honor is to be paid to Mr. Timmerman, Mr. Crawford and Miss Pegues, coaches, for their interest and suggestions which spurred the girls on to their goal of a successful basketball season. Every member of the student body belongs to the Student General Association, which is governed by a constitution drawn up and ratified by the members of the association. The constitution provides that the management of the affairs of the Student General Association shall be in the hands of the Board of Control. The Board of Control consists of the Student Council, an Honor Court, and the Faculty Advisory Committee. These three groups are assisted by committees which are in charge of such activities of the school as are entrusted to the students. The following students and faculty members served on the Board of Control during 1933-1934: STUDENT COUNCIL Lawrence Gibbes (Senior Class President), Chairman Georgia Curtis ........................................Senior Class Olin Adams ............................................Junior Class Lee Manning Wiggins ................................Sophomore Class Maude Dabbs .........................................Freshman Class Bratton Davis........................................National Honor Society Frances Dunlap.........................................Junior Honor Society Billy Byerly .................................................Hoys’ Athletics Barbara Kalber ..............................................Girls’ Athletics John Nichols .............................................All Hoys’ League Margaret Durrett.........................................All Girls’ League Jane Gilbert Joseph Wiggins Maria Powell Flora Coker Victoria Allen Floyd Chitty. The object of this organization is to create an enthusiasm for scholarship; to stimulate a desire for service; to promote constructive leadership; to develop character in the students of the Hartsville High School. Membership in the organization comes through nominations made by the students and faculty and passed upon by the Student Council and Faculty Advisory Committee. To be elected into the Society a student must be a member of the Freshman or Sophomore class, but once having been elected, membership continues throughout the Junior and Senior years. This year the Junior Honor Society has adopted for its emblem a small gold block “H”; it has adopted a constitution; and it has voted to prepare a handbill for the guidance of next year’s Freshmen and to assist in their orientation. Its membership is composed of all the girls in the school and its government is vested in an Executive Council composed of the officers of the League, the home room teachers, and the Dean of Girls. The purpose of the league is to create a feeling of unity among the girls; to develop the girl as a “whole girl”; to promote high scholarship and good conduct; to create a desire for service. Much progress has been made towards attaining these goals by a series of helpful programs contributed by the students and by Dr. Abby V. Holmes, formerly of the department of Health Education at Winthrop College, and by a number of practical projects undertaken by the girls. Student programs given from time to time offered many helpful suggestions on how to improve the school through self-improvement. Dr. Holmes gave three inspiring talks on problems relating to girls. The most interesting of the projects undertaken by the All Girls’ League have been in connection with the work of the Red Cross in Hartsville, the Christmas Anti-Tuberculosis Campaign and the campaign for raising funds for the Salvation Army. During the year talks have been made before the boys by the Rev. B. A. Mcllhany on “Overcoming Handicaps,” and by Mr. George J. Wilds on “Agriculture as a Vocation.” The last meeting held during April, entirely in the hands of the boys, was most valuable. Papers were read by Charles Gibbes, Thomas Cathcart and Floyd Chitty, on topics in connection with the proper attitude of boys towards their school community, the building, grounds, classroom and athletic activities. The discussions were timely and serious and were well received. Definite progress that promises well for the coming years has been made. Jane Gilbert........................... Miss Ruth Carroll ..................... .....President Vice President .....Secretary ....Treasurer ......Sponsor One of the outstanding clubs at the Hartsville High School is the Carrollum Forum. It was organized several years ago for the purpose of creating interest and enthusiasm for the study of Latin and to instill in the students of the school as well as in the entire community the real worth and value of this language. The members of the club are pupils of the third and fourth year classes and a few of the second year pupils who make a required average. The members of the Carrollum Forum, faculty of the High School, Latin students of Coker College, and other invited guests assembed May 28, 1933, for their annual Roman Banquet. The large gymnasium of the High School was converted into a Roman Hall and a very interesting program was carried out. The prayer to Jupiter was given by Jack McAlpine. Next the banquet was served in Roman style, the president, Katie Coker, announcing the courses. Between the courses the slaves brought perfumed water to bathe the hands. No article of food ab ova usque ad mala is honored with a place on the menu unless it had been used by the Romans. Talks were made by Superintendent J. H. Thornwell and Dr. Carlyle Campbell, president of Coker College. Two plays were given by members of the tenth and ninth grade classes, namely, “Medicus” and “Rome and the Modern World.” Those taking part in the plays were: Floyd Chitty, Fora Coker, Charles Gibbes, Lee Manning Wiggins, Mr. S. P. Coker, Margaret Durrett, Maria Powell, Robert Evins, Wallace Smith, Lawrence Gibbes, Flora Lee, Mary Parish, Joseph Wiggins, Barbara Kalber, Jane Gilbert, Bratton Davis, Billy Byerly, Ruth Marie Carlyle and J. T. Alford. Mr. Hungerpillar, principal of the High School, presented to Grace Smith the Vergil Medal.
