GLASS IIISTDRY o trace the history of our class we must go back to the year 1936 when Lee, Fran, and Ann were members of that never to be forgotten co-ed pre-kindergarten set. That year block-building and jungle-gym climbing were our main accomplishments, but the following year Lee and Ann amazed both playmates and faculty by mustering the then difiicult task of tieing shoe laces, and were consequently appointed by the teachers official shoe-lacer-tiers for all the Mushroom inhabitants. These three musketeers, leaving their beaux behind, marched hautily into the first grade to meet Liz and Phoebe. That year was one long sucession of bickerings between Lee and Phoebe, who, at first sight, had become bitter enemies, which were interrupted only to comment on the long, tan woolen stock- ings and high-button shoes that were forced on the unfortunate Liz by a prudent mama. Fran joined us in the second grade and by the time we reached third grade had proved herself a mathematical genius, as she was the only one who could cope with long division. In the fourth grade Ellen appeared and was an eager participant in our lengthy conversations concerning Fairfax's emergency appendectomy. That year also was highlighted by our trip to Easton, Penn- sylvania, to be present at Miss McGee,s wedding, from which we arrived home at the unheard of hour of 2:00 A.M. A circus mural was our fifth grade contribution to posterity, while the most mournful, but also most momentous, event of our sixth grade year took place when our long-idolized English teacher, Miss Tuttle, departed for Turkey. We had been introduced to French and the facts of life by the time we reached seventh grade, where we were rejoined by Fran and introduced to Barb. Graduation Cand for this occasion some of us donned our very first pair of nylonsj was the main feature of that year. In our first upper school year Joan entered our group and joined us in the tribulations of impending initiations and frightfully grown-up subjects - such as Algebra I. Phoebe, returning, brought with her two cronies from public school - Betty and Sue. Pat also enhanced our galaxy, most of which by now had overcome childish fears, and was aptly christened, The Terrible Two's . As Three's we again exhibited our changeable natures and did a com- plete about-face which won us the cut for good behavior. That same year was marked by our trip to the Yankee Stadium when Miss Baker so patiently led us to and from the 42nd St. bus. Lee reappeared as a four accompanied by Sal just in time to help us in the joyous task of making twelve sandwiches or paying a dollar and twenty cents. Somehow we survived the horrors of the time and our first term-papers fnot without complaining, of coursej, and fearfully had our golden tresses chopped off in the modern fashion. QLiz, who had left us in the eighth grade, popped back just in time to be a Seniorj. Now we are Veterans of college boards and weekends, and those innumer- able annual meetings which make up the famous Senior year . And now what? . ..... PHILIPS' GOMMEIIGEMEIIT ADDRESS 1949 This is the moment you have all been anticipating. For twelve years or longer you have been a part of an educational process. What you have gained from this experience depends to a great extent upon you. As you leave Hart- ridge for further study do not expect by merely going on to college to receive an education. To acquire an education you must reach out for it. You will have contentment and pride in your achievement if you continue to use with enjoyment and zest what you have acquired. As you well know the diploma you are receiving today is a symbol of the active interest and effort you have built into the past twelve years. Each one of you wishes to lead a good life, to achieve happiness, to contribute to your generation. And each one of you will work toward these goals in different ways. But to all of you may I give a word of advice - These goals are never reached by mere acceptance, by a receiving process only -- They are attained by active participation, by use of your several abilities, by giving of yourself, by carrying our share of group responsibility. Education is far more than instruction. It does not end with a secondary school diploma or a college degree. It should proceed with pleasant enjoyment throughout your life. We at Hartridge, your teachers, your friends, have high hopes for you. We shall follow you in the years ahead and welcome you back with sincere appreciation for what you have done to keep in building what we trust is an experience that will be of value to you always.
