Text from Pages 1 - 80 of the 1959 volume:

LA AEATA 19S9 Without progress, nothing would be possible; and the year of 1958-59 has indeed been a progressive one. The new library now under construction would have dwarfed the entire college as erected in 1854. Originally attended by the sons of a few Dons, Hartnell this year boasts a new attendance high of over 1,100 students. Besides being ranked high academically, Hartnell will not soon be forgotten in athletics either, thanks to the ' 58 Panthers. So, as each of you moves onward to an upper division college or into your chosen field of work, perhaps this book will help you keep track of the friends and the good times you had during 1959, our year of progress. ZOBEL, PATRICIA ANN in memoriam LOUIS ERIS With the death of Louis Eris last February, Hartnell College students and alumni lost a true friend, and Hartnell athletic teams lost their staunchest rooter. The little Frenchman was a self-made man. Born in the Basque country of France, he came to the United States at the age of 13 and worked his way through the public schools and the University of California. He joined the Hartnell faculty as a psychology and lan¬ guage teacher in 1929. Mr. Eris was perhaps closer to the students than any other fac¬ ulty member. He always had time for a kind, cheerful greeting for everyone. He sent his two children to Hartnell. Although Mr. Eris is parted from us, his memory will always remain in the hearts and minds of his former students and associates. CUSTODIANS—Row 1: Anton Senko, James Arquello.
