HARTNELL COLLEGE LIBRARY 1000062145 LD6501.H6 R4 1956 Hartnell College Library Salinas, California 93901 Jin (liiifti 1956 HARTNELL COLLEGE t ( jwoemeuL This year we have taken full advan¬ tage of the newly-formed photography class. It has helped greatly in the compiling of this book. As you turn the pages of this La Reata in future years you will regain memories that may have laid dormant without this year book. It is our sincere wish that through this book students will relive their days at Hartnell College. iRIMHk ii gggSSSSS J)ahfisheif by the, c Issoeiated Students o4 Uattneff doffeije, Safinas, (Sifiifaruia Q-zmn cAiound the A OothL With many people of different nationalities enrolled at Hartnell College, it is only logical that our 1956 La Reata should carry an international theme. Students from many countries around the globe come to our shores and to our college in quest of higher education and to learn American ways. Many of our students will return to their homes abroad and some will make a new home here. China, Japan, Iran, the Phil¬ ippine Islands, Germany, England, regardless of their birthplace, they have shown them¬ selves to be exemplary citizens of our college and nation. MR. LOUIS ERIS r )e(lienti()tt The Associated Students of Hartnell College respectfully dedicate this yearbook, La Reata, to Mr. Louis Eris. Educator, father, sports enthusiast, he is all of that. He came to teach when the college was part of Salinas Union High School and stayed on to see the college acquire its own campus. In twenty-seven years of teaching at Hartnell, he has shared his sorrows and joys with hundreds of stu¬ dents. Quick to smile and lend a helping hand but still able to admonish an erring student, he is a standout in the scholastic world. Of his many special interests, sports remain foremost with him. Athletic teams have come and gone from our campus but winners or losers, he was behind them all the way. Race, creed, background, he only stressed that they be either good winners or gracious losers. To Hartnell’s own Louis Eris, this book is gratefully dedicated. • ' 1 d ® S$ ' ■■ : • ■ ■ Ib SSteV. 8 !mLu w ft £ Z m ; Mm - ffii $ % ’ s % Bu . ti c hi minis tuition LYMAN FOWLER Director of A. and M. Mr. Stuart Dufour be¬ came president of Hartnell College after the sudden death of John B. Lemos in 1954. Mr. Dufour came to Hartnell in 1946 as director of the journa¬ lism department. In 1952, he was named administrative assistant to Dr. J. Frederic Ching, superintendent of the Hartnell Junior Col¬ lege District. A 1932 graduate of San Mateo Junior College, he received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Stanford University in 1934, and was granted his Master’s degree in 1941 from the same university. Mr. Dufour was on the editorial staff of a metropolitan newspa¬ per from 1934 until 1939. During World War II he served with the American Red Cross. Mr. Dufour was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. He is mar¬ ried and has two children. ( DeanjL DR. WILLIAM J. McCALLUM, CLIFFORD SWANSON, ROGER S. GAMMONS, WILBERT J. ROBINSON, MRS. With his fine coaching, the team was successful in finishing the season at .500, even with the great number of injuries the team received. Blue, with his victories over Monterey Penin¬ sula College, joined Dick Voris and Elliot Wilson as coaches who have fielded a team which has defeated Monterey Peninsula College twice. Coach Blue and his assistants brought a team onto the field which had the spirit and the will¬ ingness to make a fine combination. The team had a great line and a good backfield with such men as Papa, Ander¬ son, Bareng, Boutte, and Payne. Payne was one of the best linemen to come out of Hartnell. He was named all-conference tackle, Compton All-Opponents, and was given honorable mention on the all-Ameri¬ can junior college team. Led by Takeo Hirahara and David Crocker the team tied Menlo Junior Col¬ lege, 19-19, keeping the Oaks from going to the Junior Rose Bowl. Wes Bond placed third against such great cross-coun¬ try men as Ludlon who was a former junior col¬ lege state champion in 1953. Hartnell entered the San Jose Junior College Cross-Country Invitational meet to which all northern California junior colleges were invited. Hartnell took second honors. Wes Bond, Dick Casper, George Harris, Henry Mazzucatelli, Richard Axe and Everett Alvarez were the Hartnell representation.
