Since the inception of this nation, our courts have served as interpreter and defender of the Constitution. And they shall continue to do so in the future. Faith in our governmental institutions must not blind us to the other requirements of constitutional government. No court or legislature or executive could insure the preservation of our liberties if our citizens were indifferent to those liberties. In the last analysis, the American Constitution has been committed to the American people for safekeeping. Its security depends upon its being lived as well as cherished. DICK EPPLEY Student Body President The student commission, backed by an outstanding finan¬ cial year, was able to boost College activities to a high degree of success. The commission carried out its plan to purchase new band uniforms, secure a new station wagon, revise the student body by-laws, and take an active part in student government conferences throughout the year. Com¬ missioners also worked with the architect and the faculty in planning for the proposed $100,000 student union which was authorized by the district board of supervisors in the fall of 1953. SEASON AT A GLANCE Coach Ed Adams 7 cagers had an almost unbelievable season this year, and compiled a 21-won, 8-lost record. Winning every game they played on their home court, they were able to win only four games away from home. Highlight of the year was the championship trophy in the Hartnell-sponsored Small College Tournament. The team was built around 1952-3 veterans Bob Larson and Bill Smith. Coming back from the service were Jack Rowley and Herb Withers to strengthen the team. Howard Lum, first-year man from Salinas, completed the starting five. Don Williams, Charles Olson, and Ron Martin also saw consider¬ able action and showed well. Coach Adams expects great things from next year ' s squad that should do better than the third- place finish in the conference this year. !■ -■ ' £ - What happened to the ball? Coach Jess Regli greeted one of the largest turnouts for base¬ ball in Hartnell history. Seven veterans, Boutte, Ridge, Adams, Herman, Smith, Dillard, and Shields, returned for their sec¬ ond year. Opening the season, the Panthers played a 5-5 tie with the Alumni — lost a tough 1 -0 game to the strong Stan¬ ford Braves. Rain was playing tricks on Regli ' s nine and four games had been rained out as the book went to press. Out¬ standing freshmen included Har¬ old Kolstad, a pitcher, and in¬ fielders Don Halterman, Don Locke, and Dick White. Jess talks with ace Kolstad Who ' s gonna get it? I The Hartnell track turnout for 1954 was one of the largest in many years. Coach Ed Adams believes that with a good showing by the new freshmen the Panther tracksters have a fine chance at the conference title. In their first meet of the year they trounced Menlo and M.P.C., scoring 81 points.
