Rowena Regli and Bob Stein- bach assisted the editor in organizing the Activities and Sports sections of the book. New at the job, Mr. Robert Johnston assumed the duties of advisor three weeks after the beginning of school last fall. He spent many tedious hours with the capable photographers and staff in helping to make this a fine book. Despite the frequent change of sports editors and a small staff the editor carried on the traditionally fine record of the Hartnell journalism department until trans¬ ferring to San Jose State at the onset of the spring quarter. Dick Johnson, the “Rajah” of the lighter-side “Campusology,” took charge for the remainder of the year. Advising the journalists was Mr. Robert Johnston in his new post. He guided the staff through the hectic hours of dirt-digging to meet the Tuesday deadline. Despite a slim budget, students were seldom disappointed on Fridays when they eagerly looked forward to reading the facts in The Panther. With the only drama major, Tom Rogers, as a member of each cast, the players presented the mysterious Two Mrs. Carrolls; Alumnus Richard Cimino in Christmas Carol; the trium¬ phant and hilariously big Taming of the Shrew; and the concluding comedy, with Bob Day and Myrtlerose Craig, Candlelight. Marching Band performing at Monterey ■■i The Marching band appeared at all home games and also for the Monterey Peninsula College - Hartnell game on Thanksgiving. The early part of the season showed little success to the Panther squad and they proceeded to lose their first six contests. The Panthers opened their season by traveling to Modesto, where they lost to a powerful Modesto J.C. unit, 27-0. In their first home game, the Hart squad enjoyed a 21-0 halftime lead, only to succumb to the Placer J.C. team, 26-21. Playing their best ball of the early season, the Panthers lost a one-point decision to the Taft J.C. Cougars, 27-26. Back home again the Maroon and Gold was trounced by the classy Fresno J.C. outfit, and things really were looking bad for the team. “Ye Olde Gaboon” was recaptured by the Menlo J.C. Oaks when they proceeded to lash out a 30-7 victory over the fighting Hart¬ nell eleven. Due to lack of experienced reserves, the Panthers fell victims to the East Contra Costa team in the late minutes of the game, 37-21. Homecoming Game saw the inspired Harts winning their first game from the San Jose State Reserves by a score of 20-18. College of Marin fell to the Panthers, who continued their newly-found winning streak by trouncing the Mariners, 43-12. Climax of the season came when Hartnell played a beautiful game while defeating our traditional rivals Monterey Peninsula College by coming back in the closing quarter and knocking out a 19-14 victory. This is the first year that he has served as yearbook advisor, and he has done an outstanding job. Thank you, Mr. Johnston.
