A part of the residences were vacant and in bad repair. The frame school building, which was near the railroad and east of the present one, was in good condition. Nov. 6, 1906 there were several families who came to Hartley to attend the Town Auction Sale sponsored by a newly organized Townsight Realty Co. The purpose was to promote the re- building of rehabitation of the old town. At that time, Miss Lois Coleman, whose home was at Henrietta Texas, was teaching perhaps twenty five pupils. Drinking water at that time had to be carried from the section house. On Friday afternoon there was always a spelling or an Arithmetic match, sometimes both. The old timers were asked about prospects of building up the school and were advised that if the people came in to support itg that there would be nothing else necessary as there was ampl moner to have alnost any kind of a school desired the district was very large and with the small special tax the funds were ample, and the school building certainly looked like a good foundation according to the lable on the front of the building showed that it was built by Wise M Borst in 1891. S0 that was near the beginning of the existence of the school with perhaps one or two terms before the school building then in use, was built. However, in the following Jan., it was learned that the newcomers had been mis- informed about school fundsg and there were not funds to support a two teacher school. So the Townsight Co, and some of the bus- iness promoters, with the patrons, started a move to suppliment the funds by subscriptiong and some of them promised liberal sums to provide for two teachers. However, some of the donators insisted that Latin be taught and others had certain teachers for which they de-, manded special favors, which ended in trouble
