And we carry common memories In different ways. Though we don’t know where we’re going, We will cherish where we’ve been. I want to cry. I want to shout . .. Want to let this feeling out. Hold on to the moment. Let the feelings show. Hold on to the moment. Never let it go. I can picture us together With my arms around my friends. Just let me hold on to this moment, Before it ends. There was laughter. There were tears, Through the dozen golden years. HOMECOMING MEMORIES Moments of Homecoming “Homecoming” this year was a very busy time for many. Beforehand preparations were that of decorating floats, preparing class skits, and decorating the gymnasium for the dance. The activities started Thursday evening, Oc- tober 1, with the Pep rally which was held in the gymna- sium of the high school. The class skits were given and the winning skit was presented by the junior class. On Friday, the activities continued with coronation where our king and queen were announced. Troy Peterson and Daphne Schiphoff were the couple honored as our royal- ty. After coronation was the parade with the theme of nursery rhymes. The winning float was made by the senior class. Last but not least was the big game. The Hartley-Melving Hawks played a challenging game with Sanborn. Since the Hawks played their hearts out we can’t say that we lost the game. Although Sanborn did come out ahead at the end. The homecoming activities were all wrapped up with the dance following the foot- ball game. The music was provided by a DJ from KG95. Considering all the hard work and dedication that was put into Homecoming, it proved worth it as the events were enjoyed by many. -.3 -J 00 X h- 15 Steve Albert Chris Ammon Shane Boetel Gary Branson Carrie Cederstrom Paul Dagel Jennifer Groff Sherry Hartwig Scott Heetland Kim Heilman Cindy Hesse Shannan Dahnke Jamie Engelkes Doug Enger Teresa Enger Julie Westerman Travis Wohlert Troy Wohlert 19 1. WORK That’s right, it takes a lot of hard dedicated work to get the Oracle finished. Each individual page must be drawn up by a human hand. Amy, Kim, Teresa and Nancy worked diligently typ- ing the copy for the pages. Lori, Ann, Jenny, Dawn, Jennifer, Angie and Rob made detailed plans of each page to send to the plant in Visa- lia, California. You never appreciate the value of the yearbook until you work on the yearbook staff. When that last page is finished, the edi- tors and the advisor utter a sigh of relief that another year has passed. As the yearbook advi- sor, I wish to thank Jennifer, Lori and Susan for days of relentless work, late nights and long days, for without them the yearbook of 87-88 would not be a memory. 34 Hilbert, S. Swanson, K. Nurse This year the ECHO staff was under the new direction of Mr. Francisco Pe- pin. Along with the new advisor many new ideas were brought to the school newspaper. The editors were Lori Tewes and Susan Swason. The staff consisted of nine. The ECHO staff was a great group and worked well together. They all did their best to keep up on the latest events happening around the la- test events happening around the Hart- ley-Melvin School. L. Tewes, S. This year is the first year that Hartley-Melvin has competed in the mock trial, so it was new to everyone. The mock trial is made up of four attorneys and three witnesses. These students learn and prepare a case given to them by the sponsors from Drake University. The students must learn the plaintiffs side, as well as the defendant’s side, and be able to persuade the court’s decision in each setting. This is not just an ordinary competition. The students involved must learn the correct court etiquette, how to phrase their questions to get the answers they want, to apply the witnesses answers and then come up with more questions, and most importantly, remain calm and re- laxed in a tense situation. The Hartley-Melvin team consisted of dedicated young people who spent many nights and long hours preparing and rehearsing the trial. One of Hartley’s lawyers, Randy Sease, has also spent much of his time guiding the members of the team, and working with them. When Mr. Sease was in law school, he competed in the mock trial on the college level. The students who participated in the mock trial as attorney’s were Julie Westermann, Dawn Scharnberg, Lori Tewes and Jennifer Lux. The witnesses were Gary Branson, Angie Sonich and Jennifer Groff. The official time keepers were Michelle Nurse and Kim Heilman. Hartley’s Mock Trial team competed in the mock trial competition on Saturday, March 5 at the Woodbury County Courthouse in Sioux City. Hartley was the winner of the second place trophy that afternoon. The state competition was held April 7 and 8 in Des Moines at Drake University. The mock trial team presented themselves very well at the state, placing tenth out of the twenty-four teams present. The team matched up against Davis County in the morning and Marshalltown in the afternoon. The competition was tough but the team’s hard work paid off as they continued to represent their side of the case profes- sionally. On Saturday, February 27, nine stu- dents along with Mrs. Wacker traveled to George to compete at District Speech contest. It was held at George High School. Participants came from as close as Sanborn, to as far away as Rock Ra- pids. H-M had a very wide ranging group of categories in competition this year. The students and competition se- lections included: Lori Tewes, Jo Tewes and Emily Muilenburg in Interpreta- tive Prose, Kara Nurse and Matt Peter- sen in Improvisational Acting; Steph- anie Pyle and Jennifer Lux in Literary Program; Rob Harson in After-Dinner Speaking and Radio News; and Lori Riessen in After-Dinner Speaking and Public Address. Out of these students, five students received a I rating. By re- ceiving I ratings, these students partici- pated at Forest City on March 19 at State Contest. To receive a I at state all judges must give you a I, or at least two must be I’s. Out of the five students that competed at state, three received a I rating. They were Lori Tewes, Jo Tewes, and Rob Harson. Kara Nurse and Emily Muilenburg received a II rating despite their excellent perfor- mance. 41 KRAZY KAMP ■HTAtlH Front to back • Michelle N., Janet B., Michelle H., Carma S., Dawn S., Emily M., Mike M., Greg H., Troy P., Brenda B., Lori T., Shari P., Jenny L., Mrs. Wacker, Matt P., Angie S., Kyle E., Rochelle D., Scott H.. At 6 O’clock in the morning you could see stu- dents assembling on stage to begin an- other early morning practice. Students be- came very involved in their characters and some even began a totally new image, both on and off stage. Krazy Kamp was a play that both the cast and the audience had fun with. The cast became very involved as the audience reacted to the humorous incidents on stage. Front row L to R-Dawn S., Jo. T., Jennifer G., Emily M.. Twenty-six students worked hard and practiced at strange hours of the day and night to make this play a visible success. Pirates, dizzy movie stars, love-struck girls, and a sea-sick captain’s mate made this play full of action from the opening curtain to the grand finale. The 1987-88 Officer Team was: President-Lynnette Dodge, Vice-President-Connie Meendering, Secretary-Kyle Ebel, Reporter-Tracy Guggisberg, and Sentinel-Scott Heetland. The chapter was represented in five speak- ing contests, Paul Moore received a Bronze award at Sub-District, Paul Moore re- ceived a Gold award in Freshmen FFA Quiz. The Conduct of Meetings team, com- posed of Brian Meendering, Steve Back, Brent Sievert and Jamie Grosvenor, re- ceived a Silver Award at Sub-District, the Parliamentary Procedure Team, composed of Kyle Ebel, Greta Gonnerman, Tracy Guggisberg, Todd Holtz and Matt Petersen received a Gold Award at Sub-District and a Silver Award at District. Connie Meen- dering received a Bronze Award in Job In- terview at Sub-District and Lynnette Dodge received a Silver at Both Sub-Dis- trict and District. The Soil Judging team placed high in most contests. Many partici- pation awards were given out to students. Senior member, Lynnette Dodge received the Dekalb Agricultural Achievement Award and was also presented with a retir- ing president plaque. =ffa— AGRICULTURES 1987 H-M MARCHING BAND In Marching Band the band is trying to set movement to music and to have that movement coordinate with the music along with being entertaining. Marching Band develops teamwork, as everyone has to know their own music and routine but they cannot stick out as an individual, they must fit in with the whole unit. Marching band develops and requires coordination. The band members must be able to play their music plus march at the same time. The band and flag corps members have to coordinate their parts into a single unit while they are spread out 30 yards apart on a football field. Marching band requires and develops physical fitness. The constant movement while playing develops lung capacity. By being physically fit it helps the person maintain the correct posture and exactness that is needed. Marching band is also mentally challeng- ing as you try to play your music and march your routine from memory, along with remembering all the little things that go into playing music and marching. The team had a very good season after an early season slow start. The Hawks lost the opener to Rock Valley 34-8 and then lost to Milford in a very close game 10-8. The Hawks bounced back with victories over Paullina 63-7 and Primghar 16-11. Homecoming was a loss to Sanborn 17- 14 in a hard fought game. The Hawks rebounded from the loss to Sanborn with two victories over Alta 43-0 and Aurelia 32-16. The Hawks closed out the season with a loss to Sutherland 32-6. The Hawks play was characterized by a hard hitting defense and a powerful wishbone offense. The team had the dubious distinction of having loat four games to teams that all finished 7-1 for the season. Two of the teams the Hawks loat to. Sanborn and R ck Valley, qualified for the play-offs. It was an exciting season of hard hitting football all year. (Graduation will leave a lot of holes to fill for next year. c H E E R L E A D E R S Back row: L. Dodge, K. Luinstra, L. Denny. ALL-CONFERENCE GO HAWKETTES The Hawkettes had a very fine 21- 4 record season and earned a trip to the State Tournaments for a second year in a row. This was an outstanding job because the entire guard court had to be replaced from the 86-87 State team. There are many outstanding letter win- ners that will be back for the 88-89 season. The Hawkettes should be a contender for the top spot in the state if everyone stays healthy and plays up to their ability. J u N I 0 R V A R S I T Sitting- Manager- A. Muilenburg, J. Anema, K. The team had a good season and played well. The girl’s golf team has a great deal of potential for next year. This year’s track team was extremely small in numbers with only fourteen boys reporting. The team was lead by seniors Mike Benz and Alex Gutierrez. Ken Martinsen and Kyle Ebel were leading point winners. The year was spent attempting to im- prove individual performances. When the individual performances improved, the team scoring also improved. The Hawks turned in very good perfor- mances at the E-Hawk Relays in Em- metsburg and also in the Aurelia Co-Ed meet at Aurelia. These boys accom- plished a lot during track season and learned a lot about themselves and self- discipline. It was an enjoyable year in track. For having only 14 participants the Hart- ley-Melvin Girls track team had an excep- tional year. Milford and Sutherland both had 25-35 students to work with but Hart- ley-Melvin finished 3rd in the conference. Four students participated in the State track meet in Des Moines. Two new school records were set by Alisa Nonneman- Long jump-17’5” and in the 200M dash a time of 26.42. Alisa’s long jump record also set a new Sioux Valley conference record. Girls track will only lose two seniors so there should be plenty of ability for next year’s track team. 67 BASEBALL Back row- Coach John Sheahan, Brian N., Shane W., Mike B., Lance H., Matt M., Ken M., Robert T. Though we don’t know where we’re going, We will cherish where we’ve been. I want to cry. I want to shout . . . Want to let this feeling out. Hold on to the moment. Let the feelings show. Hold on to the moment. Never let it go. I can picture us together With my arms around my friends. Just let me hold on to this moment. Before it ends. There was laughter.
