HARTLEY-MELVIN HIGH SCHOOL HARTLEY, IOWA 51346 1986-87 As co-editors of the 1986-87 Oracle, we'd like to invite you to Catch the Waves that have passed through HMHS this past year; the waves of excitement, enthusiasm, mischief, learning, and friendship. We also hope you will remember that waves may come and go, but memories will last forever. Paula Leslie YEARBOOKS A yearbook is a special treasure. It holds for each an exceptional pleasure. Even though they're all the same. My yearbook has its own sole name. Everyone's experiences are different in school. And therefore our books are unique as a rule. When through my forgotten yearbook I gaze, I remember back to the most special of days. There were fun-filled times and sad ones too. Each page holds a memory, now not so new. The messages etched in love are so dear. Even if the scribbling isn't quite clear. The photographs capture and display our pride, While others bring back memories of how I cried. The secrets contained on those pages are many. Yet for some things my mind can't recall any. As I remember those times, I have no regret. It's good to remember and never forget. The activities started Thursday evening, October 9th, with the Pep rally. This was held in the gymnasium of the high school and was highlighted with the skits done by the high school classes. The prize win- ning skit was the senior class with their version of Gilligan's Island . The events continued with coronation on Friday. This was the big moment when our king and queen were announced. Leslie Hansen and Brent Peterson were the couple hon- ored as our royalty. After coronation was the parade. The winning float was made by the li- brary staff. Finally . . . the main event. The Hart- ley-Melvin Hawks met up with Alta Cyclones to complete homecoming with a 28 to 8 victory. The evening was topped off with the homecoming dance which proved to be a big success as every- one was on Cloud Nine after the victory. 1. Michelle Haarsma 2. David Jobes 3. Rodney Meendering 4. Hartley-Melvin students found out when they tried out for the fall play Cheaper By the Dozen . In a fam- ily with twelve children there has to be a certain amount of order to get things done. The cast of Cheaper By the Doz- en kept the audience amused as they portrayed the characters in this humor- ous play. If there was a moral to the story, it had to be ... The play dealt with the mixed emo- tions of her mother, Michele Peter- sen, and her sister, Paula Linder, as they had to face everyday decisions and try to decide wether to let her grow up and go out on her own or keep her a little girl as long as possi- ble. This play had a message for peo- ple of all ages and left it's mark on alot of peoples' hearts. 41 FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA Row One: S. Heetland, B. Pippert, B. Peterson, R Meendering, B. Walker, L. White CATCH THE VOCAL WAVES CATCH THE WAVE DIRECT FROM THE COACH: The Hawk football team entered the 1986 season with many holes to fill due to graduation. There were many spots to be filled especially offensively. With an inex- perienced offensive line the Hawks opened with a 12-8 loss to Rock Valley. The Hawks then traveled to a traditionally tough Sioux Valley conference game with Milford and were beaten 20-6 by the Pioneers. The team then put together two shut-out wins over Paul- lina 20-0 and Primghar 22-0. The defensive team played extremely well the rest of the season with the exception of the Aurelia game. The offense was switched to an option attack using a Wishbone of- fense. This seemed to spark the H-M team. After a 13- 6 loss to Sanborn on a muddy, rainy night, the Hawks bounced back to beat Alta 28-8 on Homecoming. The Hawks ended the season in third place in the confer- ence with a 4-3 record tied with Sutherland. The men who played this season for the Hawks were extremely hard workers. They never had an attitude problem and they played together as a team. They were a fun team to watch and to coach. Front to back: L to R: G. Struve, B. Sandersfeld, P. Ahlers, M. Sehaa, B. Walker, M. The Hawkettes' final loss went to the hands of George who eventually went on to take sec- ond place at the state tournament. The Hawkettes were a very powerful spiking and blocking team this season, dominating net play against most opponents behind the powerful attacking and blocking of senior Angie Bobolz, junior Brenda Brockmann, and sophomore Alisa Nonneman, with Leslie Hansen doing the setting. The girls placed second out of 23 squads and received the most spirited award. In August the cheerleader's carnival was held for the community. Then the football season and along with that all the preparations for Homecoming. The girls tried some- thing new this year by cheering for the girl's volleyball team. Following this came basketball. In February they held a Valentines Dance with an air band contest. The winners were the Senior basketball guys with Victory . Entering girl's tournaments, 7 male cheerleaders were added. This was a great success and made cheering at state tournaments even more fun. It was a very busy year for the cheerleaders, but alot of fun too! 57 CATCH THE WAVE OF EXCITEMENT! v A R S I T Y First Row: J. Weber, G. Harson, R. Meendering, Second Row: T. Peterson, T. Nagel, L. Scharnberg The Hartley-Melvin Hawkettes completed a very successful season in the spring of 1987. After dropping the first game of the year to last year's state champions, they won 23 games in a row. This streak included first in the Sioux Valley Conference, Sectional and Regional championships, and a trip to the state tournament in Des Moines. The Hawkettes lost their opener to this year's state runner-up. Southeast Polk. H-M's offensive average was 75 points per game, while the defensive average was 56 points per game. All-Conference selections for 1986-87 were: First Team guards Jackie Waggoner and Leslie Hansen; First Team forward Angie Bobolz; Second Team forwards Brenda Brockmann and Alisa Nonneman; and Honorable Mention guard Jill Samson. There were eleven letter winners, five of which were seniors. The Hawkettes should have a very good base to build on next year, and another successful season is a real possibility. They earned three first place finishes, five second place finishes, one third place, two fourth place, one fifth place, and one sixth place. The Hawks achieved runner-up in the Sioux Valley Confer- ence, second in the sectional tournament, and fifth in the district. Lance Heimsoth and John Weber were All-Con- ference selections, with Weber being named the All-Con- ference Captain. Other letter-winners included Thad Na- gel, Brian Nagel, and Shane Waltz. Throughout the season, Sanborn and Aurelia battled for the top spot, but Sanborn held on and edged Aurelia as conference champs. At the sectional meet in Sanborn, H-M placed second, led by meet medalist Leslie Hansen. At the regional meet, the Hawkettes ended their season with a third place finish behind Sanborn and Aurelia. Sanborn then went on to win the State 1A Championship. For the third year, Leslie Hansen was named to the Sioux Valley All- Conference Team. Those students participating in track worked to the best of their ability. Track is a sport where the student must have the desire to do well if they are to succeed. Although we did not place first in any conference track meet, we gave it all we had. This has been a good group of guys and I've enjoyed working with them and will look forward to coaching them again next spring. 66 GIRLS' TRACK Row One: T. Guggisberg, G. Gonnerman, K.
