Everyone was kept busy throughout the week as freshmen, sophomores and seniors constructed floats and juniors made preparations for the dance. Coronation was held on Thursday night. Carol Hesse and Chad Remmers were crowned queen and king. Amy Schierholz, Mia Williamson, Dean Ahlers and Mark Johnson were the attendants. The cheer- leaders then took over the festivities and performed a skit and some cheers as the pep band led everyone in our school songs. Friday afternoon the streets were crowded with fans to see the parade and pep meeting. The Junior High Hawk band played pre- game for the H-M vs. Primghar game. The Hawk band honored the Royalty at half time with their version of “Five-Foot Two-Eyes of Blue”. The Hawks put forth a good effort, but were defeated by Bull- dogs, 20-13. After the game everyone enjoyed danc- ing to the sounds of Super System. The Blue’s Sisters (L. Hansen. A. Bobolz) HM's Model Search Winners (M. Petersen. P. Linder) What’s so interesting. Lori? (L. Jorgensen November 14th was selected as the date for the fall play “Pure as the Dri- ven Snow”, an old-fashioned melodra- ma-complete with chorus line. Due to the Noonan-Lake tragedy, this play was never presented. All students in- volved had worked diligently in prep- aration for the performance. Even though this play was not presented to the public, each member of the cast grew from the dramatic experience. D E 0 H L 48 CHARLIE'S AUNT First Row-D. Jobes. K. Smith. M Schaa. P. Linder. M Petersen. K. Roghair Second Row-H. Jorgensen. J. Sonich. B. Walker Third Row- L. Heimsoth s p R I N C P L A Y “Charlie's Aunt”, a three-act farce was presented on Wednesday, April 17th. This play deals with a spoof when Charlie’s aunt fails to show up and Lord Fancourt Babberly assumes her identity. The cast enjoyed working on this presentation, even though at times things happened that they weren’t expecting. A young cast composed of all sophomores, except two juniors, we can be assured of fine actors and actresses for several years to come. SPEECH Four Hartley-Melvin students received recognition at the district speech contest held in Cherokee. Lance Veldboom received a I rating in Interpretive Prose; Jeff Sonich. a I in both Radio News Announcing and Im- provisational Acting; Denise Espey, a II rating in Radio News Announcing and Improvisational Acting; and Scott Honken, a II in Storytelling. Coach Fletcher The Hartley-Melvin Hawks concluded a very successful basketball season in 1984-85, finishing with a 13-6 record. This year also saw the Hawks complete an 11-3 conference record, good enough to share the conference championship with Primghar. In a very balanced league, the Hawks defeated everyone at least once. Outside the conference the Hawks also defeated Little Rock, who eventually won a berth in the state tournament. Seniors Dean Ahlers and Gary Richter led the squad to a good season. The Hawks exceeded most pre-season expectations enroute to a very respectable year. First row- M. Schiphoff, B. Nagel. G. Unrau, G. Harson, L. Dau. K. Smith Second row- Coach Sheahan. L Heimsoth, T. Tasha Kranz. and Keri Luinstra. Some of the varsity squad was able to attend the NCA Cheer- leading Camp at Vacation Village over the summer, where they learned new cheers and chants for the coming seasons, and were awarded a spirit stick for their peppy performance at one of their nightly evaluations. They also learned dance routines and performed one to the tune of Let's Hear It for the Boy at the coronation pep meeting. Swapping with the Spirit Lake cheer- leaders. they added more new yells to their list of crowd-raisers. Sponsored by Beth Burley, the cheerleaders put on a number of pep meetings, conducted a spirit week, held a mini-cheerleading clinic, and had a lot of fun! Enthusiasm from the stands was greatly appreciated by both the teams and the cheerleaders. Randy and Rhonda Menke and Phil Schauer were selected to receive the annual awards presented at the athletic banquet to HM’s 1 fans . The 1985 girls track team made vast improvements over last year. They finished 3rd in the conference with eighty- four and one half points. They also scored 29 points in the District meet, taking Lisa Grave to the state meet in the 800m run and Angie Bobolz in both the shot put and the dis- cus. The Hawkettes had one conference champion, Angie Bobolz, who won both the shot put and the discus events. GIRLS' TRACK ii Front row- T. Hardin. D. Kolpin. J. Ronnfeldt, L. Grave. A. Meiske. It was a year to remember, one we will never forget. As the Hartley-Melvin high school bids the close of 1985 a farewell, we'd like to reminisce on some of the memories from the past year. Fads and fashions includes fluorescent clothes, spiked hair and cropped pants. Some of the most played tunes were Relax: Don’t Do It by Frankie Goes to Hollywood. When You Close Your Eyes” by Night Ranger, and Run to You by Bryan Adams. One of the most talked about events of the year was the night some members of the senior class attended a school board meeting. During the course of the evening, one of the senior members decided he was sick of the whole thing and let his feelings show. Although the senior class was one of the smallest in years, we had our share of good times. Many new friendships were formed and old friendships renewed throughout the year. We. the editors, hope you enjoy this edition of the Oracle. since much hard work and many hours were spent to put it together.
