1984 1984 1984 1984 1984 The oracle staff wishes to dedicate this yearbook to the two meAvho have taken the greatest number of steps through tfte halls of HMHS. Together, Bob BuJfE and Delbert Mathiesen have worked thirty years keeping our school facilities in the fine cOnCmion they are today? After ten years of service, Delbert M. retired at the end of 1983. Leaving his mop and broomstick behind, Delbert waved a final farewell to HMHS. As students, we rarely take the time to tell these men how much they really are needed and appreciated. We’d like to tell you now .. Thank you, gentlemen, for all of your hard work! 2 Superintendent- William Hutchinson Principal- Charles Schmidt A D M I N I S T R Cherie Sterk. Freshmen, sopho- mores and seniors were busy building floats while the junior class made plans for the dance. At the Thursday night coronation, Angela Miller and Mark Westphal were crowned queen and king.Jill Flick, Jill Weber, Brian Mills and Brent Tewes were the attendants. The cheerleaders then performed a skit and the pep band led everyone in our school songs. Friday turned out to be a warm, sunny day for the parade and pep meeting. Before the football game the Hawk band honored the roy- alty by playing “You Are”. At half time the football alumni of 1951, 1952 and 1953 were honored. The Hawks put up a good effort, but unfortunately they were defeated. After the game a good time was enjoyed by all as they danced to the tunes of Super System, LTD. 10 1. As the season pro- gressed, three more shows were presented, and, for the first time, we participated in a marching band contest at USD in Vermillion. The band also participated in state con- test where it received its twelfth consecutive I rating. Their contest show consisted of El Toro , We've Got Tonight”, Africa , and Battle Hymn of the Republic”. After one last home show, the band and drill team ended a fine season. 47 THE RELUCTANT DRAGON First Row- C. Walker. A. Miller. D. Ahlers, Second Row- N. Ronnfeldt, D. Feddersen, M Meyer. J. Sonich. Walker 48 On November 16. 1983, the Hartley-Melvin Drama Depart- ment presented its version of The Reluctant Dragon. The play was set in a fictional village and its surrounding area called The Downs. It was about a very friendly dragon whom everyone thought was a maneater. No one believed a little boy when he said that the dragon was really kind and wouldn't hurt anyone. It took the mock death of the dragon to open the eyes of the villagers. All in all, it was a very enjoyable performance. f w • il |E | w A f ” 4 • W CAST IN 0RDE3? After losing four strong seniors, there was some uncertainty as to whether the 1983-’84 team would be as com- petitive as the previous year’s squad. Yet, with much hard work and determination, these girls finished as both the conference and sectional champions. Vet before we say good-bye. we’d like to take you back to some of the more memorable experiences of 1983-’84. amouflage pants took over the fashion scene as well as cropped pants, walking shorts, and penny loafers. Walking down the halls of HMHS, many could be seen break dancing from class to class with Walkman in place. Most were listening to the number one album of the year Thriller” by Michael Jackson. Other top groups included Culture Club, Van Halen, and the Romantics. Because the 1983-'84 school year will never be known as a real movie and film era. many gathered at one house on the weekend and saved a couple bucks by watching Nighttracks and other video channels. The big scandal of the year involved the cheerleaders who allegedly drugged the entire football team at the annual Homecoming breakfast. The rumor was put to rest when the football boys assured the public that their hot chocolate had not been tampered with ... although the eggs were a tad green. An investigation was also conducted by Mr. Arndt over the cruel and unusual death of his beloved friend and companion, Garfield. After many months, he concluded that the derranged murderer was seated somewhere in the saxophone section. The highlight of the year came when the girls' basketball team headed for Des Moines to participate in the State Tournament. Although they lost their first game, everyone had a great time-especially the Marriott maids?! According to a couple of senior boys, any girl weighing more than a bread box was considered obese and thus deserving of the nickname Fatso.’’ Unexpected blizzards found many people stranded at the Bowling Alley, in school vans, and in country ditches. We hope you have enjoyed the 1984 Oracle. Many hours of hard work have gone into this yearbook so students may look back to recall fond memories of friends, fads, and just some fun times. We now leave you with these words which have become the senior class motto, Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we’re free at I r'X fi V — V. fc.r, 4A. —r-rr - ,-v — % r? %”4 -V -. , V .. A .
