During her junior year-the 1981-82 school year- Laurel J. Back was an exchange student through the ‘‘Youth for Understanding Exchange Program.” She spent a year in Denmark in the town of Hillerod located about a half-hour drive northwest of Copenhagen. Her Danish mother was an English and French teacher in Copenhagen and her Danish father had his PH degree in economics and is a lecturer in Copenhagen. She had two sisters-one her age and another only one year younger. Laurie went to school in Denmark, learned the language, customs and traditions, gained a family and learned alot about herself. It was a wonderful learning and growing experience,” said Laurie. ‘‘It’s not easy being an exchange student. You have to give so much of yourself and not expect anything in return. That way, even the little things are special.” It’s one year she’ll re- member forever!! Some of the Juniors took the PSAT tests and all of them took the ITED tests. Then they took the ACT tests, the ultimate test of scholastic ability. During the tests, most of them either cried or went into fits of hysterical laughter. Money became a major concern for the Juniors as they planned and financed the Homecoming dance and the Prom. To increase their funds, they worked at banquets and in the concession stand at varsity basketball games. In order to save on expenses, decorations for the Homecoming dance were kept to a minimum, but the dance was a success and everybody grooved to the hit tunes played by the disc jockey. Finally the big night arrived- the Jr.-Sr. Banquet and Prom. Peddling all that popcorn and all those candy bars finally paid off. The banquet included Iowa Chops served by the O’Brien Co. Pork Producers and the rest of the meal was served by the Munch-Inn. The Sopho- more waiters and waitresses were also a big help. The theme they chose was “Just You and 1”. The Whiskey Creek Band played for the dance and every- one parted tappin’ their toes and hum- min’ a tune. The Juniors certainly had an eventful year and a memorable one also. This number was diminished by one when our classmate Jolene Morgan moved to Gar- den Oty, Kansas. We were small in numbers, but big in creativity. Inspired by the hit “Pac Man Fever”, our homecoming float took 1st place in the contest. FRESHMEN Class Officers; President David Meiske; Vice President Gary Vanderlee; Treasurer Carl Petersen; Secretary Mindy Williamson The freshmen class, under the leadership of President David Meiske. has had a great start to our four years at HMHs When we all entered HMHS at the begin- ning of the year, each one of us felt pretty nervous and a little scared about everything. Most of us grouped together in little huddles afraid to associate with upperclassmen. Once we got settled in and used to the new faces and new schedule, everyone felt at ease and got along fine. One of the main highlights for our class was Homecoming 82. Al though our float came in third, the foot- ball guys gave us our first homecoming victory in seven years. The Hartley-Melvin Drama Depart- ment put on the children’s play “Jack and the Beanstalk’’. The play was quite similar to the well- known fairytale. It was a great suc- cess with the younger audience. It was a good experience for the ac- tors and actresses to work with this type of play. 40 “Toga, Toga, Toga” was the spring play the drama dept, put on. It was an updated play about the situations that happen in a fraternity house. The play ended up with a big toga party cele- brating the renewing of the lease for the house. The cast really enjoyed putting on this type of play since it dealt with some of the happenings in today’s fraternity houses. Bottom Row- I to r- K. Roghair, M Pannier, L. Heimsoth, N. Ronnfeldt, J. After nineteen matches, elev- en of the girls qualified as letterwin- ners. Undefeated in the conference, the Hawkettes easily regained their title as Sioux Valley Conference Champs. Having a tough time in tournaments, the Hawkettes lost to Everly in an unfortunate game. The Hawkette Volleyball team finished its season with a record of 13-6 (Matches) or 39-17 (Games). Nagel. The '82-83 varsity cheerleading squad consisted of a fresh new group of young ladies, with Julie Jorgensen the only returning member. Newcom- ers to the varsity scene were Jill Flick, Carol Hesse, Lynette Nagel, Julie Noonan, and Amy Schierholz. N.C.A. camp at Okoboji was a great way to break the ice for this new squad. The girls proved that they could function as a unit by their achievements throughout the week. They re- ceived four superior ratings and two spirit sticks. Ideas picked up at camp were put to good use during the season. Dozens of new chants and cheers as well as routines to “Pac-Man Fever” and “Through Being Cool” were performed. Also throughout the year the cheerleaders planned pepmeetings, a spirit week, and spon- sored a sweetheart dance in February. Accompanying the girls basketball team to the state tournament in Des Moines was another very special highlight of the season The cheer- leaders were honored to have had that opportu- nity. The J.V. squad also had an exciting year. Three newcomers- Teresa Hardin, Ginny Bobzein, and Missy Marco- joined veteran Teri Tayhor to gen- erate spirit at Hartley-Melvin High. The season was closed when the cheerleaders presented the annual spirit awards to Herb Leth, Jeanne Schaa, and Ann Meiske at the Athletic Banquet. The cheerleaders owe much of their success to their wonderful sponsor, Beth Treloar. They would also like to thank the fans, the pep band, and the members of the teams for supporting them and for making this a year to remember. 56 L to R- V. Bobzien, T. Taylor, M. Marco, Top- T. Not Pictured- Coach Jesse Coach Jesse’s 1983 squad finished the track season 4th in the Sioux Valley Conference. This was the first upper-division finish by the Hawks in five years. The Hawks were led this year by Mark Meyer in the sprints. B.J. Hutchinson and Dean Ahlers in the middle distances, and Mark Westphal and Michael Branson in the long distance races. The girl’s track team got off to a slow start this season and blacktops served as the track until the weather cooperated. The 15 girls who were out for track participated in six meets, one was districts and the other two were very cold. Two other scheduled meets were unattended because of the weather. We had outstanding performances in many of the meets by Deb Kolpin in the 300 meters and by Angela Miller in the 200 meter dash. Everyone will be returning next year so we can look forward to an outstanding season in 1984. GIRL’S TRACK ■4 _ F. Row M Williamson. G. Harson, D. Kolpin. J. Ronnfeldt, J Wills. A Meiske. L. Tewes.
