We feel that as the years pass by it does not get any easier being a teenager. The pressures have increased both with peers and teachers and more is expected of us by our parents. We have learned many lessons, hard as they may have been and we will continue to learn throughout our life. Our courage has been evident throughout our years in school and we will continue to show the world that the c lass of 1982 is truly great! Paula Jorgensen This year the students of H.M.H.S. have had three new exchange students to broaden their horizons; Claudio A. Queqada M., Pamela Paulina Aceredo and Clara Londono. Claudio is the son of Hugo and Marta Quezada from Chile and is making his home with Darold and Arlys Rost, Arlen, Darwin, Daniel and Donaa, Claudio has a brother Hugo and a sister Marta. For hobbies and favorite pastimes he likes to listen to music, read, play rugby and soccer and also has a blue belt in karate, and enjoys fishing and swimming. Pam is also from Chile and is making her home with David and Jeanette Jorgensen. Mike, Ann, Paula, Julie, Harlan and Tony are her American brothers and sisters. Pam’s parents are Francisco and Olidia. She has two sisters, Patricia and Ximena. Pam says her favorite pastimes are shopping, going to movies and listening to music. Last but, not least is Clara. She comes to us from Columbia and has made her home with Merlyn and Evelyn Feddersen, along with her brothers Delmar and David and her sisters Dawn, Denise and Debbie. Her mother’s name is Alicia and she has three brothers and four sisters. Clara’s favorite pastime is dancing and listening to music. We hope that these students have enjoyed their year at H.M.H.S. and that Youth for Understanding will continue, so that we can benefit from our exchange students and that someday these ties will help strengthen our friendship with other nations and that someday we will all live in peace. The co-editors for this year are Kristy Haack and Toni DeVries, with Diane Graven and Mitch Mayer as as- sistant co-editors. Mrs. Homan was the yearbook advisor. In August Kristy and Toni attended a summer camp at Buena Vista College in Storm Lake. There they gained many new ideas and worked on putting the yearbook together. Toni’s project won the school eight pages of spot color to be used in the Oracle. We hope you will enjoy them. In September five mem- bers of the staff and Mrs. Homan went to the Worthington Community Col- lege for the Josten’s yearbook work- shop. Here we learned more about put- ting pages together and how to take pic- tures for the yearbook. We hope you will enjoy paging through the 1982 Oracle and will cherish all the wonderful memories of the year we be- came one. 40 Echo Left to right: Kristy Haack, Linda Swanson, Jill Weber, Rox Nagel, Lisa Petersen, Toni DeVries, Angela Miller, Julie Noonan, Jill Flick, Jean Noonan. In one week the marching Hawks put together a fine show that was well received. The season in- cluded four completely different halftime shows, a homecoming parade and state marching con- test. The band received a I with a score of 89.1, which was the fourth highest score in the State of Iowa. Band Officers 1st row: T. Mattheis, J. Jorgensen, J. Hesse, 2nd row: L. Peters, P. Kunkle, L. This musical contained witty songs, romantic music, swift dialogue and dramatic action involving a Prince who is seeking his true love with the aid of a magic mirror. The Prince ends up in Transavainia where he finds his true love. The only catch is he has to weave a birthday garment for the Emperor which is made out of a fabric that only people fit for their social office and social standing can see. The trick is pulled off until a small girl tells the real truth that the Emperor has no clothes on. The Prince opens the Emperor’s eyes to the real importance of his reign, his people, not the material things of the world. After dropping their open- ing game of the season 76-69 in the Spencer Clinic this group said no more losses and proceeded to roll up twenty victories in a row before losing again. A very fine effort by a group that was sup- posed to be rebuilding. Even though the entire guard court will graduate the forward court will be back. This was the best shoot- ing court in the Sioux Valley Conference for the season and should be even better next year. The Hawkettes will be looking to repeat as Sioux Valley Champs in 1982-83. The year can be summarized as one in which many games were lost by close scores. The Hawks lost 9 games by a total of 29 points and were unable to win any of their close contests; so the season could have easily been turned around with a few breaks. They spent many hours thinking up the jock skits and pre- paring the pep meetings. This year’s varsity squad had a “brand new look’’ with their new uni- forms which they worked very hard for. The year was memorable and very rewarding. The new cheerleading sponsor for this year was also an asset; Miss Treloar of- fered her leadership and ideas to the girls so the squads could func- tion as a unit. 76 Girls’ Track The 1982 track year got off to a slow start. First it was snow, then came the rain. There was so much rain that two track meets were cancelled. Good hard practices were few, but the effort by the girls at track meets were super. We had six meets and District which we participated in. At Conference we came in fifth. Julie Morgan made the confer- ence team by placing first in the long jump. We had two seniors that will leave us. Boys’ Track We had a very young track team this year with two seniors, five juniors nine sophomores, and five freshmen. We competed fairly well in most meets, radually bettering times and distances, and eights. We generally competed in the large classes at track meets which eliminated a large amount of scoring. On the whole, our young team did quite well. We primarily ran individual events because it was really tough for us to come up with four quality relay runners. Our best relay was the Two Mile Relay which was composed of four soph- omores. Our best individual events this yer were sprints (100 and 220) and long distance (mile and 2 mile). We competed in the Bulldog Relays in Aurelia, E- Hawk Relays at Emmetsburg, Pioneer Relays at Milford, the Hawk Relays at Hartley, the Paullina Relays, Great Lakes Invitational at Spirit Lake, District at Sioux Center, and the Sioux Valley Conference Meet at Hartley. The boys also com- peted in a dual meet with Sutherland. Sitting: Chandra Kranz, Amy Schierholz, Robin Lux, Linette Klatt, Mia Williamson. For the first time in 4 years the Hawkettes were Sioux Valley Conf. Champions with a team score of 195. Judy Meyer, Annette Selby and Paula Jorgensen were selected to the 1982 All Conf. Team. The Hawkettes repeated last years effort by again winning the Sectional Tournament which was held at Rmerald Hills Golf Course on May 17, 1982. District competition was held on May 25, 1982 at Rmerald Hills. We finished 3rd behind Pochohantas and Milford. Joanne O. pictured here stran- gling Brad H. 117 o o 118 We took 1 more look back at HMHS and what did we see? Doug Bob M. - “Take Off’, Velvet Jones’ 2 publications, and being born in a barn. O-tay! Gloria, Calvin Jordache took over the fashion scene with designer jeans, mini skirts, the western look and headbands. But when one thinks of headbands it brings the memories of Punk Hock, Loverboy, porta- ble headphone cassettes music boxes, and the Ra- mones. Jeff Shinkle’s lunch box made the rounds along with funny things in Hummer’s locker - Schimmer, we know it was you! Bodie revealed himeslf to many as did Hud Griffith. The Basketball girls could be heard singing their favorite commercial - My bologna has a first name - etc. The band also had its problems with intonation and Jean Hesse’s harmony. The Preppies invaded HMHS with their topsiders, monograms, izods and the The Official How to be Preppy Book. By the way, can anyone tell me who has the prime car with the mud on it? Breaking windows seemed to be a favorite habit of many students this year along with pulling the fire alarm. The Senior boys had their fun with pigs, let- ting them loose and decorating lawns with them. But who can forget the fun we had attending those Heav- enly English Classes. The 4A Senior girls went on army maneuvers while heading for the ditch for rea- sons unknown. To reminise through the 1st official year at Hartley- Melvin High School brought back a lot of good memories. Kristy Toni hope you have enjoyed this years Oracle and we wish the best for the students of HMHS. For now we are 1. [ Sponsors Full Page Dacken’s Barber Shop Morgan’s Florals V. H.
