ECHO EDITORS: GAYE MUILENBURG TWILA DE VRIES It was a great year for the Echo . We tried to get an Echo out every month. We didn't always succeed, but we gave it our best. This year in the Echo we took alot of polls, started a Very Important Person column and even found out some secrets from some of our teacher's spouses! We would like to thank everyone who worked on the Echo and wish next years editors the best of luck! 42 front I. to R.-J. Miller, J. Hutchinson, C. Kramme, T. Peters, C. Heetland, L. The highlight of the year was the band's competition in the State Marching Band Contest held in Sheldon. The band received it's 9th consecutive I rating, the longest string of I's of any school in N.W. Iowa. Their score of 89.7 was far above the 68 points necessary for a I rating. Also competing in the contest was the flag swinging ensemble, which received an excellent ratine Hartley was honored this year to receive an invitation to present their show at the halftime of the Westmar College football game. After an excellent response of the crowd, the band was further honored by the Westmar director of bands when he sent a letter congratulating their performance, calling it the best performance by a high school band they ever had . These two performances highlighted a year that also included 3 home halftime shows and the homecoming parade. All of these events combined to make the 1979 marching season one of the best ever. 54 DRILL TEAM L. to R. The final score ended up 41-0 in favor of the visiting school. The Hawks then entertained Sanborn and were beaten 16-6 in a game of many mistakes by the home team. Hartley finally got into the win column with a 27-12 victory over the Alta Cyclones at Alta. The Hawks then played the conference co- champions Aurelia Bulldogs and lost 34-6 after scoring first and played Sutherland and lost 31-11 after again playing well for the first naif. The Hartley team then fought the other co-champion team Milford an excellent game but lost 22-6 on big plays by the Pioneers. The Hawks held the Pioneers to only 4 first downs but fell to defeat anyway. The Hawks were then soundly beaten by Paullina but rebounded for a 22-14 victory over Primghar, finishing the Sioux Valley Confer- ence race at 2-5 and sixth place. The Hawks finishedthe season with a loss to Greattinger 52-20 for a record of 2-7 overall. The year aeain started with another new coach and another new system that the players had to learn. The players learned alot about what it takes to win and also now to accept defeat. It was a hard lesson to learn but one that will be remem- bered for years to come. This year's team picked up where last year's team left off, and their efforts paid off in the first winning season for a Hartley volleyball team. And they did it in style, with a record of 11-6, including Sectional Champs. We were pleased to have assistant coach Dave Kerr join us this year. We stressed conditioning and fundamentals at the beginning of the season and gave all players a chance to compete. We suffered through four early season losses, but the team really pulled together the second half of the season, winning 6 of their last 7 matches and 15 of the last 17 games of the regular season. They avenged early season losses to Paullina and Alta, but lost two to Sutherland and two to Sheldon on the season. Team leaders in serving percentage were Julie Morgan (86%), Cindy Heetland (82%), Judy Linder (80%), and Darla Boernsen (80%). Julie Morgan and Cindy Heetland led in points scored with 133 and 116 respectively. Mary DeGraaf led in spikes and blocks, followed closely by Beth Wehrkamp. Next year will be the first year for a Conference schedule. With alot of hustle and much team work the young Hawkettes compiled a 15-7 mark and saw 10 underclassmen letter for 1979-80. Led by first team all- conference selections Mary DeGraaf in the forward court and Shirley Elgersma in the guard court the Hawkettes ended up second in Sioux Valley Conference. Among their many accomplishments was a sectional championship, the first in several years, pinning the only defeat in conference play on the champions Aurelia by 14 points, a very outstanding performance against eventual class A state champions Terril. All in all a very successful season and the future looks bright because all ten letterwinners will be returning next fall. 73 This page sponsored by Hartley and Sanborn Foods Inc. HAWKS! J. Meyer, P. Their inexperience proved to be very costly as some early games were lost which could have been won. The only real highlight of the season was defeating a good Fonda team which had only lost one game prior to their loss to the Hawks. We have some good young ballplayers who learned alot this year, said Coach Larry Fletcher. They'll have to learn twice as much next year if we are going to be competitive. If hard work makes teams com- petitive, we'll be an improved club in 1980-81. 75 GIRLS TRACK Front L. to R.-D. Woodard, L. Craun, S. Bates, M. DeGraaf,). Linder, S. Elgersma, C. Heetland, ). Duffield 107 MEMORIES Memories are made of things that happen everyday moments as we live them things we do or say Little bits and pieces of laughter mixed with tears paragraphs and pages written through the years The friendships we remember mistakes that we regret the ending of a love we never could forget we can't erase the sadness or edit out the tears we can't undo the wrong we can't relive the years But since memories keep building each day can be the start of making new and happy ones to store within the heart •
