Bill was born November 26, 1960 at Sheffield, Iowa. He and his family moved to Hartley in 1961. Bill was enrolled in the Sunday School at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, the Hartley Elementary School and was active in Cub Scouts. He died March 21, 1970 of Hodgkins disease. Today I touched a gentle rose, its beauty for to see, Caressed its blossom in my hand; observed it carefully. Its stem so straight and sturdy grew; so strong, so firm, so tall, Supporting every tiny leaf so that it would not fall. Each petal delicately burst forth in glorious, golden hue With fragrance rising fresh and sweet, touched by the morning dew. But as the time passed swiftly by and day drew to a close, I thought of how one’s life is like the beauty of a rose. Just like the rose, a life begins, then slowly dies away; But the memory of its beauty is forever here to stay. 2 School Board Row 1 - Mr. Schmidt, Pres. Terrie Boemsen, V-Pres. Peters, J. Moreira, D. Rost Hartley High School had two important additions this year - our foreign exchange students - Annette Strandberg and Katia Martinez. Annette is from Sweden; when she arrived last Fall she was greeted by her American parents, Mick and Arlys Rost, her brothers Arlen, Darwin and Daniel. Her parents back at home are Sten and Birgitta Strandberg. Annette is the only child and enjoys horseback riding, dogs, dancing, and music. In the future Annette plans to go on to school, probably a University, travel a lot and see a lot of new places and meet more exciting people. Katia is from Columbia, where she has a brother, Arturo Martinez, two sisters, Marta and Gladys. Her parents from Columbia are Luis C. and Gladys de Martinez. Katia’s home this year has been with the Merlyn Feddersen family, where her sisters were Dawn, Denise and Debbie and her brothers were Delmar and David. Katia enjoys playing the guitar and tennis. In the future Katia is considering being a translator, but she isn’t sure yet. Another addition came later on in the year from Brazil, he was Jusclino Moreira. Jusclino stayed with the Milo Peters family with his American parents being Mr. and Mrs. Milo Peters. His brothers and sisters were Kim, Mark, Debbie, Lorelei and Daniel. Jusclino had many good memories here at H.H.S. while dancing with one of the pillow people and all of his funny personalities. 10 SH0IN3S O vooooooooooooooooc 'nvt y S avnA £i a m x k o y ia eA amc @$o£o y 12 oewnten SuecA ew- 13 14. Students worked hard all week to make their floats presentable for the parade Friday afternoon. The crowning of the King and Queen took place Thursday night following a snake dance led by the cheerleaders. Terrie Boernsen was crowned Queen and Randy Roggenburg was elected King. Their attendants were Melody Bates, Mike Butt, Nancy Jatho and Neil Roghair. Following the parade Friday afternoon, a short pep rally was held on Main Street. That night the Hawks took on Sutherland and was defeated 13-6. After the game a dance was enjoyed by everyone, with the band “Strutter” playing. SOPHOMORE Dig In and Do It FRESHMEN Road To Victory . They marched in Luverne, Minnesota at the Tri-State Band Festival, competing with thirty-three other top bands from South Dakota, Minnesota, and Iowa on Saturday, September 30, 1978. Their show consisted of the songs “Khartoum”, “Star Trek”, a saxophone chorus playing “The Muppet Theme”, “Chorus Line” featuring Phil Schmidt as the soloist. One of the features of the contest was the parachute effect. The band then took their contest show to LeMars, Iowa on Saturday, October 1, 1978, competing against sixteen other bands at the Iowa High School Music Association’s Fall Marching Band Contest. They were one of the three bands to take home a I rating to complete their record which now stands at eight I ratings in the past eight years. The show opened with the stage band’s presentation of “Live!” featuring Sherri Kramme as saxophone soloist. Slowing down the pace a bit was the swing choir with their version of “Sometimes When We Touch”. Melody Bates presented her vocal solo “Midnight Blue”. The Swing Choir followed with their disco rendition of “Can’t Stop Dancin’ ”. Randy Puhrmann was the featured trumpeter as the stagehand presented “Candleglow”. They followed this with fast swing number “Firebreak”. Sandra Verhoef chose as her vocal solo “Hopelessly Devoted To You”. A collection of ever-popular “Commercials” added a unique variety to the swing choir’s selections. Phil Schmidt, accompanied by the Stage Band, presented a trombone solo entitled “Trombone Soliloquy”. The saxophone section was featured in “Slightly Saxy”. The mellow, jazz style of singing was shown by Lisa Back as she presented the selection “This Masquerade”. Rounding out the swing show was a visit by the ever-popular Walt Disney Characters of Mickey Mouse, Snow White, and Mary Poppins (Rachel, Karen and Julie) as the swing choir’s presentation of Walt Disney songs, with Chris Back as soloist. Throughout the year the cheerleaders planned pep meetings, and sponsored a Spirit week which consisted of hillbilly, flashy clashy, outer space and twin days. They also did a routine to YMCA” and for the Parents’ Night game. The season was closed when the cheerleaders gave the annual spirit award to Karee Muilenburg, Judy Back and Dee Kolpin at the Athletic Banquet on April 3. It was a memorable year for all ten of the cheerleaders, one they’ll always remember. They would like to thank all the fans and the pep band for their support. Even though the Varsity record was only 3-10, the skill level of the team improved tremendously over the season. The JV record was 4-5. The girls worked hard to improve their bumping, setting, spiking, serving, and blocking skills. A lot of progress was shown as the girls gained experience against tough competition. At the end of the season the girls demonstrated that they were capable of playing with anyone. As their skill level improved, they found that volleyball is a very exciting sport, requiring plenty of hustle, skill, and teamwork. We were sorry to see the season end, but proud of our much-improved play. The team leaders for Varsity were seniors Kim Peters, who had an 85% serving percentage (94 out of 111) and scored 77 points, and Jean Otto, who served 81% (109 of 134) and scored 79 points. Sophomore Mary DeGraaf served 82% (81 of 99) and scored 68 points. Seniors Jean Otto, Kim Peters, Amber Jacobsma, Bemette Yager and Judy Back will be missed. Hartley’s Centennial will get underway August 2, with a parade, floats, pageant, Picnics, trading booths, etc. There has already been a kick-off dance with many people attending. It was at the dance when they crowned Hobart and Bertha Putnam as King and Queen, and Todd Burley and Kim Peters as Prince and Princess. This is a time to remember and acknowledge our community. Yes, the little rural farming town of Hartley which lies in Northwest Iowa, well-known as the Home of the Hawks, is now 100 years young. The school is our beginning and through it we grow to love our community, our town and home - HARTLEY!
