The man we have chosen for this honor has been teaching in our school for over forty years and was yearbook advisor for 12 years. Because of his dedication to help us through good times and bad, we recognize him now. With deep sincerity we would like to say thank-you to you, Mr. Kelley, our friend and teacher. 2 School Board Front Row - Supt. Eduard Kennis came from Veldhovem, Holland. Eduard made his home away from home at the Walter Ronnfeldts. His temporary brothers and sisters were Mike, Phyllis, Don, Tom, Nancy and Joan. Eduard’s parents are Mr. and Mrs. Kees Kennis. His father is a social worker at a shelter for homeless, and his mother is a housewife. He has four brothers, Ad, Hans, Mark and Arik. Some of Eduard’s interests are soccer, billiards and mo-peds. In Hartley Ed participated in football, basketball and student council. Our other foreign student came to us from Hamburg, Germany. His home in Hartley was at the home of Mick and Arlys Rost. His American brothers were Arlen, Darwin and Daniel. Wolfgang is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilhelm Katenz. His father worked in a courthouse as an officer and is now retired, his mother is a housewife. Wolfgang has one brother. In Hartley Wolfgang was a Homecoming attendant and was in Student Council. Wolfgang likes to travel, swim and speak different languages, in the future he plans to be a language translator. 10 SH0IN3S Randy Arends - Basketball 1-2-3-4; H-Club 2-3-4. Jackpot Victory Hom?coming Week, 1977, h.;-m Monday, October 3 with float construction. Coronation was held uptown on Thursday night before a large crowd. Greg Mills and Becky Linder were crowned King and Queen with Sheri Taylor, Teri Dillingham, Kevin Getting, and Wolfgang Katenz as attendants. After a spirited pep meeting, the cheerleaders led a wild snake dance through the streets to a bonfire at the ball park. Since it rained most of Friday, October 7, the parade was postponed until one week later, and Friday’s pep meeting was held in the gym. The Hawks band began the evening's events by playing Evergreen”, to the Royalty. The Hawks played the Aurelia Bulldogs and were defeated 15-7. After the game, everyone went to the gym to dance to the music of Elessar”. The following Friday the Junior High band led the elementary students, floats and the High School band in the annual Homecoming parade. Making your way down the busy halls of H.H.S. you can hear many sayings, but some seem to stand out. One that you hear quite ofu n is N.B. or what about Hi, Hi, Hi! During football season the popular saying was “Football You Bet!” Any time of the day that food was mentioned you might hear “Pig Out” or “Chow Down . In Mr. Fletcher’s study hall or classes one could nlwavs hear, “Get Busy!” Other favorites int.ude: Wi.at a Kill, Don’t Panic, Nay, Nay Possay, It’ll Come Out in the Wash, It’s been Real Man, You’ll get Over It, etc. What were your favorites? The pictures on this page will remind you of some of these sayings. Becky, Brenda, Sandra, Lisa, Natalie, Julie, Ann, Sheri, Carol, Amy Tournament Time Is Fun Time One of their MANY pep meetings The 1977-78 Cheerleading squad consisted of 10 enthusiastic girls. The six Varsity cheerleaders were chosen by the students and three outside judges; the four Jr. Varsity cheerleaders were selected by the teachers. The two squads went to NCA camp at Lake Okoboji during the summer where they learned a variety of new cheers, chants, stunts, and skits. The Varsity squad worked really hard and received two Spirit Sticks, a number of ribbons, and a superior rating. The Jr. Varsity also received many ribbons. The cheerleaders were responsible for organizing the weekly pep rallies which included selecting an athlete of the week, performing various routines and skits, and the school songs. In addition, they also sponsored the annual Spirit Week. The student body and faculty was required to dress properly for Maroon and Gold Day, Flashy Clashy, Dress Up, Grub, and 50’s Day. There were also two designated Hat Nights which fired up the crowd and teams. The week concluded with a Sock Hop with music provided by Disco On Wheels. At the Athletic Banquet, Janice Meyer and Denise Meyer were presented with the Spirit Awards. Overall it was a productive and exciting year for the Cheerleaders! This year the team played mostly 2 out of 3 games. There was much improvement in the areas of serving and bumping, and spiking. Next year looks very promising for the Hawkettes with many returning underclassmen. JUNIOR VARSITY Front Row - B. Wehrkamp, M. DeGraaf, T. Peters, M. Hein, H. Olson, M. Butt, R. Blair, J. Linder, J. Throughout the year they were invited to several programs at Westmar College and Clay Central High School which students attended on their own. On May 2 the club presented Little Joe’s Polka Band for a community polka dance in the high school gym. An imported German Stein was given as a door prize and they sold German candy, hot pretzels and soft drinks as refreshments. The German II and HI students wrote an original play entitled Bezaubemd”, patterned after the TV series “Bewitched”. They performed the play from memory at a program at Royal with the Clay Central German students as an audience. The club was fortunate to have the two foreign exchange students, Eduard Kennis of Holland and Wolfgang Katenz from Hamburg, Germany, participate in then- group this year. 68 This page sponsored by Team Sport, Spencer Jons Gallery, Primghar Front Row - Mr. Lawrence, C. The Fellowship of Christian Athletes, with an active membership of 27, had one of its premier years. The 'ellowship ran the snack shop during the summer and made enough money to pay for its activities. The Hartley FCA held the first Sioux Valley Conference FCA Retreat at the high school. It was a two day affair eginning at noon Saturday and breaking up on Sunday morning. Four Sioux Valley schools sent representatives: Uta, Aurelia, Milford and Hartley. Paullina had also shown an interest, but its representatives never showed. The weekend included huddle time, Dog Patch Olympics, sharing, and most of all the talents of Rick Neilson. Rick shared his magic and commitment with all. As a whole, it was a very rewarding weekend for our huddle. The latter part of March, 17 members joined in the State Retreat at Marshalltown. Again this was the highlight of he year and brought great rewards to all. In May four members attended the Storm Lake High School Retreat. We also had two of our female members go to iioux City West High School and listen to Madeline Manning speak. To end a great and meaningful year, the FCA met at Coach Martinsen’s home for a farewell picnic supper for Coach Lawrence. After the picnic, they pre- sented Coach Lawrence with a beautiful picture of the Last Supper and taped many of their special FCA songs. The FCA members would like to thank Coach Lawrence, Coach Martinsen, and Miss Fett for all the help they gave us and for being huddle leaders. These initiates included all seniors, juniors, and sophomores who fulfilled the requirements in leadership, scholarship, character, and service and who had a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 for seniors and 3.2 for all others. This year the Honor Society was asked to help Mrs. Fletcher with her special education class at the elementary. Members of the Honor Society helped her make special cards, games, and taped lessons and stories out of books for the kids to listen to. They also provided tutoring services for those students in high school who had difficulty in certain classes. 70 Math Team L.-R. Randy Hansen, Charla Meerdink, Denise Meyer. The Math team that went to Des Moines to participate in the National Math Contest consisted of Randy Hansen, Charla Meerdink, and Denise Meyer. They were rated 4th in the state with Charla Meerdink in a 3-way tie for 1st and Randy Hansen 4th place. The 1978 Math team which attended a contest at Vermillion, S.D., consisted of 19 members. They returned with nine high honors: Advanced Math - Mark Butt - Superior-lst in both large and small schools, Randy Hansen-Excellent, Geomet y-Kim Peters-Superior, Charla Meerdink-Excellent, Neil Roghair-Good, Algebra II-Carter Smith-Superior, Algebra I-Jurine Adolf-Honorable Mention, Kim Meerdink-Superior, Nancy Bernier-Honorable Mention. Both teams were under the direction of Mr. Wehrkamp. Water Study A local ecology project (LEP) was developed in Northwest Iowa in the summer of 1977. About eight schools in the area are participa- ting in this project. The purpose of the project is to allow students to do some testing and sampling in a scientific investigation of water quality beyond their classroom experience. The students under the direction of Mr. Harson sampled several physical, chemical, and biological parameters at two sites on the Ocheyedan River. Students participating this year were Mark Butt, Don Ronnfeldt, Lori Kamradt, Mike Kraft, Art Laubach, Carter Smith, Jennifer Smith and Tami Veldboom. Front Row - Mr. Harson, Sponsor; M. Kraft, M. Another year is done. . . completed. . . gone. For many it’s just another year x-ed off the calendar of life, another year closer to that diploma. Then there are those of us who will no longer have H.H.S. as our home away from home, those who have successfully completed those 13 long years. But were they so long? It’s funny how we humans can never truly appreciate things until they’re either out of reach, or gone. But now we will go on to enrich our lives in other ways and each find our own happiness. As we have learned to Treasure yesterday, Dream tomorrow, and Live today. As Editors of the 1978 Oracle, we have found out that to reach a goal, a person must work for it. There were many people who put in their long hours of hard work to help this book become a reality instead of just a dream. We would also like to thank Mr. Fletcher, our advisor, who was always there to urge us on whenever we needed help, (and there were plenty of these moments). We would also like to thank Mr. Arndt who took many important pictures for us during the year. We hope we have said it all, but to anyone who helped us in any other way - THANK YOU!!!!
