Pete and Brother, Darwin. This year we were fortunate to have two foreign exchange students. Christoph Korbmacher came to us from West Berlin, Germany. He stayed with the family of Walter and Mary Ronnfeldt. His temporary brothers and sisters were Mike, Joan, Nancy, Phyllis, Don and Thomas. Christoph’s parents are Dr. and Mrs. Gunter Korbmacher. His father is a federal judge, and his mother is a housewife. Christoph has two sisters and one brother in Germany. One of Christoph’s interests is playing the piano which he has been doing for approximately seven years. Traveling, jogging, swimming, German handball, and going to parties are also some of his other interests. During his stay in Hartley, Christoph participated in football, student council, track and German Club. Pierre (Pete) Choumoff came to us from Paris, France. Pete made his home at the Mick Rost farm. Mick and Arlys Rost became his American parents, and Arlen. Darwin and Daniel, his American brothers. Pete is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Serge Choumoff. His father works as an engineer and his mother is a speech therapist. Pete is the oldest in his family and has one younger sister who is fourteen. Pete's hobbies include riding horses, snow skiing, swimming, and walking. He enjoys attending our school and participates in FFA and is on the Student Council. We all wish them both the best of luck in their futures. Chris is helping out. The Hartley fans cheered on as the Hawks took on the Alta Cyclones with a victory of 12-0. “A 94 yard march for the first touchdown had to be one of the most beautiful marches we’ve had since I have come to Hartley,” Coach Lawrence stated. Queen Shelly Sayler and King Eric Poison were honored at half-time. Attendants Pam Wehrkamp, Sharon Tarnasky, Mark Riedemann and Mark Dillingham were also introduced. After the rewarding victory, the band “Eclipse” entertained at an evening of dancing in the decorated gym. -35- Row 1: Glenda Selby, Ann Loder, editor; Becky Linder, photographer. The school paper was published once a month with a special feature each month entitled “Senior Spot- light which honored the seniors. The Echo enlightened the students with the Hawks Eye” and the numerous interviews, it also informed the students of up-coming events and gave the results of the past happen- ings. 44 - PROM A Big Success It was a good feeling to have the word “Prom” around the halls of HHS this year. Seven years ago was the last time it was ringing in the air until this year. The seniors and juniors worked very hard to gain it back and when it was a confirmed yes” they got busy. A car wash, bake sale, clean up, and dues helped pay for the night's success. Decorating took place all week, including nights. Saturday, April 23, everyone got into their outfits and headed for their big night. Meadowbrook Country Club was the location of the dinner with a small program afterwards. Everyone then got with their dates and went to dance to the music of the band “Justin Davis”. Decorations were great! After a good night of fun, many people went to a breakfast prepared by mothers and fathers who happily volunteered. 45 - if .. jimuM A •H'ULl tjom t v® L. toR.: S. Prins, C. Back, A. Loder, J. Dowd and closest friend, an invisible six foot white rabbit named Harvey. Elwood introduces Harvey to everyone, much to the embarrassment of his sister Veta and his niece Myrtle Mae. Veta and Myrtle decide to have Elwood committed to Chumley’s Sanitarium. Instead of locking up Elwood, Dr. Sanderson, Dr. Chumley’s assistant, decides it is Veta who is in need of help and puts her in, and lets Elwood out. Soon the mistake is discovered and the search for Elwood is on. Dr. Chumley catches up with Elwood at Charlie's Place. There they have a few drinks. Elwood introduces Dr. Chumley to Harvey. Chumley can see Harvey and they become good friends. So good, that when Chumley finds out that Harvey can stop clocks, he decides he must have Harvey for himself. He decides to give Elwood an injection of formula 977. Veta stops the injection at the last moment because she realizes she wants Elwood to stay the same way always. 53 ■ Front Row: T. Veldboom. J. Many of the performances by the group took place outside of the community. Two days were spent at the Clay County Fair singing over radio station KICD. Then the group performed for the Hartley Kiwanis Club and at the Autumn Serenade. A trip was made to Everly as the choir sang for the Farmers Coop. Elevator’s banquet. Then on a cold January day, a journey was made to Brook’s Lodge on Lake Okoboji to sing for the Iowa Holstein Association’s Annual luncheon. Song and holiday wishes were brought to the community as the swing choir held their traditional Christmas Caroling party. A journey was made to Primghar for an evening’s performance for the O’Brien County 4-H Leaders Banquet. The swing choir also performed at the swing show. Concluding the year’s activities was a “day on the road’ ’ as the swing choir joined the stage band to tour several schools throughout the area. Alternate choir members Tanya and Bryan joined the group on various occasions throughout the year. New songs, choreography, their stunning new outfits, and a group of truly talented and dedicated musicians combined to make this a most successful year. SWING SHOW The Swing Show, “Magic To Do”, was held on March 23. This show gave the group a real chance to share its talent with some 700 receptive listeners. Ann Loder sang What I Did For Love Traces”. Mike Baker and Eric Poison sang “Sunshine”. Jerry Geibe, assisted by Shelly Sayler, sang “Au- tumn”. Monica Jensen and Natalie Kohn sang Don’t Go Break’n My Heart”. • 56 • From left to right: D. Frick, M. Baker, E. Poison. B. Prins, D. Feddersen, S. Tarnasky, Mr. Doug Braa. G. Selby, S. Back. P. They have also performed at the Swing Show, Class Night, Camp Sunnyside Fun Night, and National Honor Society Initiation. A new feature this year was a tour the stage band and swing choir took. They performed at several schools in the area. 57 • ¥M i CHEERLEADERS Becky Linder Sandra Brazle Shelly Sayler Ann Jorgensen Pam Wehrkamp Natalie Post Julie Gebert Sharon Tarnasky Amy Peters Pam Magnussen Busy Busy Gals The cheerleading squad for the “1976-77” sports season was composed of six varsity and four Jr. varsity girls. The varsity cheerleaders were chosen by the student body and three outside judges after a strenuous tryout while the Jr. varsity were selected by the teachers. The cheerleaders prepared themselves for the upcoming season by going to camp. They learned a variety of new cheers, chants, and skits there. They also received pointers on how to generate spirit throughout the school. Throughout the year they prepared pep meetings which consisted of cheers, chants, skits, and the “star of the week”. They also planned spirit week which included grub day, maroon and gold day, inside out and backwards day, dress up day, and “50’s” day. Toclose the season they sponsored a Sweetheart Hop. The music was provided by the Rhythm Aires, and entertainment was provided by the cheerleaders and Sally Dew and the Dew Drips. This year will remain in everyone’s memory. Leading the Snake Dance. Volleyball being only in its 2nd season, faired pretty reasonable considering Hartley played teams that have had volleyball before they even had basketball; therefore they had more time to devote to the advanced techniques of bumping, setting, and spiking. The team had the option of playing 2 out of 3 games or 3 out of 5 games to win the match. We mostly took the 3 out of 5 games so we could acquire more experience in game situations. There was a lot of improvement in the areas of serving and bumping but more work is needed in the areas of setting and spiking. If all goes well, Hartley should look forward to a good season next year and will be one of the top contenders in our area. 64 J.V. Front Row L. to R. - V. Linder, J. Prins, S. Taylor, J. Back, R.
