In the summer Karen Jenkins, the other Editor for this year attended the Iowa State Summer Yearbook Camp and brought back new ideas for our layouts. A bake sale was held to raise money for the First Annual Oracle Dance, and another job for the staff was Oracle Sales. 1976 Foreign Exchange Student This year our Foreign Exchange Student, Reynaldo G. Reyes, came to us from Quezon City, Philippines. When he arrived in Hartley he made his home at the Mick Rost farm. Mick and Arlys Rost became his American parents, and Arlen, Darwin and Daniel, his American brothers. Rey is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Reynaldo G. Reyes. His father is an architect while his mother is a housewife. Rey left quite a large family back in Quezon City. He has six brothers and three sisters, the oldest twenty-nine and the youngest nine. During his stay in Hartley, Rey kept busy being the football, basketball and track manager. He also was on the student council. We wish him good luck in the years to come. Oracle Royalty Queen Lisa Rossiter and King Jay Stoterau Kevin Otto Mary Hilbert Karen Jenkins Jerry Johnson This year the Oracle Staff wanted to try and have something that everyone would remember the royalty by. So they worked hard to organize on March 19 a coronation and dance. At the dance Headstone performed. During their first break the royalty was introduced and the King and Queen were named. So much has happened. As we look back to 1973, our class officers: President, Roger Bobolz; Vice President, Steve Meyer; Secretary, Karen Jenkins; and Treasurer, Deanna Jager did a good job getting the class organized. Our float was, We’ll Chew 'Em Up”, while Karen Jenkins and Kevin Otto were honored as Oracle attendants. Next in 1974 the class officers: Pres., Jan Petersen; V. Pres., Karen Jenkins; Sec., Sue Petersen; and Treas., Rhonda Stoneking with the class worked on a float, ''We’re Unbeatable”. Jan Petersen and Arlen Rost were chosen to be Oracle attendants. As 1975 rolled around, Pres., Mona Jacobsma; V. Pres., Karen Jenkins; Sec., Dave Treimer; and Treas., Roxanne Peters organized Homecoming and the float, They're Just a Bag of Wind”. Mary Hilbert and Jerry Johnson were Oracle attendants. Now we are the graduating class of 1976. Our memorable events for the year you will find in this Oracle. Memories By Alice E. Chase Memories are made of things That happen every day Moments as we live them Things we do or say. Little bits and pieces Of laughter mixed with tears Paragraphs and pages Written through the years. The carefree days of childhood The growing pains of youth A few illusions shattered In the endless search for truth. The friendships we remember Mistakes that we regret The ending of a love affair We never could forget. Yes, memories are happenings Each one a different kind Each one a separate chapter That is printed on the mind. We can’t erase the sadness Or edit out the tears We can’t undo the wrongs we’ve done We can’t relive the years. But since memories keep building Each day can be the start Of making new and happy ones To store within the heart! This year the Student Council became more aware of the complaints of the students, about the school system. Interest was projected by members attending School Board meetings. A fine job was done by the Student Council in organizing Homecoming. Lining up the parade route and selecting judges were their main jobs. Roger Bobolz served as Student Council President, while the other officers were Mark Dillingham as Vice President, Becky Westphalen as Secretary, and Ann Treimer as Treasurer. Sports |V ‘A X FOOTBALL The unexperienced Hawks opened their season on Sheldon's home field. Hartley won three quarters of the game 19-6, but unfortunately gave up 27 points in the third quarter and went down to a 33-19 loss. On the road again, we went to Paullina and were defeated 30-0 at the hands of the eventual “Conference Champions”. On September 19, the Hawks went down to their third defeat at Primghar, 22-9. A long awaited return home came on September 26 when Hartley entertained Sanborn. The Hawks, playing up to their potential, whipped Sanborn 35-0. Back on the road again on October 3, the Hawks traveled to Alta and played one of their best games of the year. Moving out to an early lead, the Hawks ended up beating the Cyclones, 20-12. Homecoming '75 was the next game, providing the competition was Aurelia. In one of their best efforts of the year, the Hawks fought a tough Bulldog team to a 12-7 loss. The Hawks then traveled to Sutherland on October 17. The Hawks played the type of tough football they had displayed in the second half of the season. They went on to defeat the over-matched Tigers 48-0. The next opponent was the Milford Pioneers, who on October 24 were defeated by the Hawks 19-6. The final game of the season and also Parent's Night was against the ever tough Sioux Center team. Hartley was defeated 21-0. The season as a whole was one of both frustration and enjoyment. We didn't accomplish the record we would have liked but valuable game experience was gained which added to the maturity of the players. Coach Lawrence's final comments on the 1975 season were, “No one likes to lose, we sill work to win, but in looking back on this season I had to admire our kids in the way they coped with defeat. I think that our underclassmen saw what it takes to win. I’m sure that you will see and hear from the Hawks in the future.” R. Bobolz, D. Rohde, R. Ruby, Coach Lawrence, K. McCarty, R. Ellingson, D. The cheerleaders for the ’75-’76 sports seasons, which consisted of 6 Varsity and 4 Jr. Varsity girls, will long be remembered at H.H.S. not only for their help to put spirit into the fans but for their many awards and honors they received. During the summer the Varsity girls went to NCA camp at the Lakes where they won many ribbons and the famous “Spirit Stick”, while the Jr. Varsity went to cheer camp in Orange City where they were named as the “overall cheerleading squad. As the year went on, the 10 girls came through on top again at the Cherokee Cheerleading Contest. Here they were given the trophy for the Best Sportsmanship” The football and basketball seasons were filled with new skits, cheers, posters and hoops. After this victory they met Harris-Lake Park, but were defeated in a close battle. Steve Meyer was our leading scorer for the season. He was named to the All-Conference team. The Hawks are looking forward to a good season next year. The Jr. Varsity completed their season with a record of seven wins and eight losses. Girls Basketbal Front Row - S. Petersen, T. The Hawkettes started the year out quite strong because of the three guards and two alternating forwards returning from last year. As the season progressed the Hawkettes were faced with three defeats. Their offensive average was 55.7 and defensive average was 45.4. They became Co-Champions of the Conference with a record of 12-2. The tournaments came quickly; here they met area teams and were beaten in sectional play. The Jr. Varsity showed their toughness in all their thrilling games. Baseball and Softbal Front Row - R. Bobolz, A. Rost, D. Treimer, S. Meyer. Second Row - L. Rasmussen. K Poison. S I h. These girls showed a lot of spirit and loyalty toward their teams throughout the year. We hope in years to come there will be fans at Hartley High like Mary and Talli. HOMECOMING ROYALTY King and Queen Jerry Johnson and Denise Flick The three girls nominated to be Homecoming Royalty were chosen by the football boys and then the student body selected the Queen. The King and attendants were chosen by the girls in the senior class. The King was then selected by the student body. The six students were honored Thursday evening at the coronation and Friday, riding the float, and at the ballgame. Attendants Kevin Otto and Lori Nagel Rhonda Stoneking and Arlen Rost The Hawk Marching Band provided the music at the parade Friday afternoon and at the football game. On October tenth, the Hartley High School students, alumni, and fans celebrated their annual Homecoming, for 1975. The Homecoming festivities started on Monday night with the construction of floats. As the floats were built, the cheerleaders prepared the coronation and pep rally on Friday afternoon. The Homecoming Coronation took place on Thursday night at seven o’clock. Here last year’s King and Queen crowned Denise Flick and Jerry Johnson as the 1975 Homecoming King and Queen with Lori Nagel, Rhonda Stoneking, Arlen Rost and Kevin Otto as attendants. Talks were given by Mavis Johnson and Curtis Bobolz, while cheers and skits were enjoyed by the Hawk fans. Then on Friday night the Hartley Hawks met with the Aurelia Bulldogs and were defeated. After the game the gym was the scene for the dance which featured The Gas Company from Estherville. The band entertained everyone with their variety of music until twelve-thirty. The night was filled with many surprises and memorable happenings. HOMECOMING 75 The excitement grew at coronation Thursday evening. The H Club this year organized many new things that will add to the club in the future. Groups were made to change the H Club Constitution and also to decide on an initiation of new members. An annual Fun Night was held on March 30. It turned out to be very enjoyable. In future years the H Club will hope to have many more projects to entertain the community. MINI COURSES For the second year mini courses were again held for both High School and Junior High students. A variety of classes were offered, allowing Seniors first choice. Mini courses ran for three days and each class lasted approximately two hours. Fifteen minute breaks were allowed between classes, along with a break during each class. Breaktime led to be the highlight of the day. This was the best time to look in on other classes and to see what they involved. Seeing other classes helped give students ideas as to what they might like to sign up for next year. Overall, the teachers enjoyed the three days as much as the students did, if not more. The roughest part for everyone was starting back to regular classes. ECHO STAFF Front Row - C. Meyer, A. Loder, P. Wehrkamp, Janna Bobolz, M. Fahrenkrog. Second Row - J. Meyer, M. Jensen.
