Sons of 1975 We will open our eyes and see The world we could not change for ourselves Reach out our hands and take The world that will belong to you We all were on our way to a better day And the spirit was in us all But as time went by, the better day never came Maybe we will be the last to fall We are the only ones There is no one left but us We are the chosen ones There is nobody else to choose But the time changed it If I thought I knew what was good I would have done it for us all Worlds of Tomorrow Life without Sorrow Take it because it is yours Sons of 1975 I can still see that great panorama of hate Slowly being changed But some brothers broke stride Some sisters, they cried And some friends, they died Now we start new lives. At the pre-game show on Friday night the Queen, King, and attendants were brought onto the field with the H.H.S. Band and Drill Units. The Royalty was featured on the senior float during the parade. Homecoming On Friday, October 4, Hartley celebrated their 1974 Homecoming. It was said to be one of the greatest. To start off the festivities the annual coronation and pep rally was held at the high school on Thursday night. Here Cynthia Sayler and Perry Peters were announced as King and Queen, and Mary O’Brien, Pat Sweeney, Randy Menke and Ron Hengeveld were honored as the attendants. Mr. Schlotfelt was the master of ceremonies, and Mr. Lawrence announced the royalty. The cheerleaders gave skits and cheered while Mrs. Elmer Peters and Pastor Sayler gave talks. The royalty from last year were also present. On Homecoming Day there was a parade and pep meeting on main street. The floats, fans and royalty gathered together to cheer their team on. That evening the stands were filled with fans as Hartley won over Alta. After the game there was the traditional dance which featured “Headstone” a band from near Waterloo. These five musicians blew the gym apart with their music. A slow dance featured the Home- coming royalty, but before the night was over the floor was filled with alumni and high school students. It was said by all the 1974 Homecoming was one of the greatest. The Hartley Marching Band led the royalty, floats and cheerleaders to the main street pep rally on Friday afternoon. Starting off the year, the varsity shared skits and ideas they learned at NCA camp this summer. One idea was a Jack in the Box for each football game. Next for the basketball season a Spirit Stick was created to pep up the fans. At each pep meeting the stick would go to the class with the most pep. Finally the cheerleaders thought everyone needed a reward for showing so much spirit, so they made decorations, prepared pep meetings, hired a band and had a Spirit Week. This included a dress up day, a flashy clashy day, a grub day, a maroon and gold day, a ’50’s day. Then on Feb. 14 the Sweetheart Hop came. Here Mr. and Mrs. Lester Peters were announced as the Sweetheart Parents, the Rhythm Aires provided the music, and the people provided the fun. The H.H.S. students had fun doing the things the cheerleaders prepared this year. Front Row - S. Brazle, J. Bobolz, D. Jager, M. Hilbert, N. Krumm, C. Sayler, P. Sweeney, J. Petersen. Second Row - L. Their major performances this year included the Autumn Serenade, Christmas Concert, Spring Concert, and State Music Contest. A quartet made up of Tammy Nielsen, Denise Flick, Dennis Dahnke and Steve Meyer auditioned for the All-State Music Festival. Accompanists Becky Hansen, Cindy Sayler, and Barb Prins lent support to the group throughout the concert season. Choir officers included Perry Peters, president and Vernon Sandersfeld, secretary. On February 8, Joan Colling, Pat Sweeney, Dennis Dahnke and Perry Peters represented the Hartley High School Vocal department at the Northwest Iowa Choral Festival in Cherokee. After spending a day of rehearsing with guest conductor Don Craig, the choir presented a very successful concert, along with the Westmar Chorale. First Row: S. Taylor, B. Linder, T. Nielsen, S.
