— THE 1967 ORACLE - ORACLE ATTENDANTS Left to riflht: Shorolyn Koele, Mory Schierholz, Moureen Steinbeck and Roxie Morfitt. Each year the classes of Hartley High School select girls from their groups to represent the classes in the annual. As each book is purchased, the buyer votes for one of the four girls. The class whose candidate is voted Oracle Queen then choose a second girl to serve as the attendant. These five girls then reign over the Oracle party, held in late spring when the annual is circulated. The party is planned and sponsored by the Hartley chapter of Quill and Scroll, international honorary journalism fraternity. Page Six

— THE 1967 ORACLE — CHARLES SCHMIDT Hartley High School’s principal, Charles Schmidt, graduated from high school in Scotland, S. D. He attended Southern State Teachers Col- lege where he received his Bachelor of Science de- gree and continued his studies at the University of South Dakota where he obtained his Master of Arts degree. Mr. Schmidt taught for eight years before coming to Hartley in 1965 to accept the position of principal. HOWARD BORCHARD Howard Borchard, superintendent, is a gradu- ate of Spencer High School. He received his Bache- lor of Arts degree at Wayne State Teachers Col- lege and his Master of Arts degree from the Uni- versity of South Dakota at Vermillion. He first came to Hartley in 1954 as an English teacher. He became principal in 1956, a job which he held for eight years. In I9i4 he attained his present position of superintendent. BOARD OF EDUCATION Standing: Clarence Olhousen, H. L. Borchard, superintendent; Dr. J. C. Peterson, Jr. Seoted: Duane Kolpin; Harry Olhausen; Vaun Gonnerman, president; Milo Peters and Marlin Vetter. Each day the decisions involved in running a school system with an annual budget of nearly $500,000 are made and influenced by the members of the HHS adminis- tration. It is by no means a small task and yet is one for which only occasional appreciation is expressed. The job that these men do and have done in the past has made Hartley High School one of the top schools in the state. For their effort in making and keeping HHS high on the standards of the relatively small schools in Iowa, these people are truly to be honored and respected. Page Six A
