Text from Pages 1 - 106 of the 1967 volume:

THE 1967 ORACLE — HARTLEY HIGH SCHOOL This is the place . . . Hartley High School ... a brick and mortar structure used as a center of education. Completed in 1963, it has already felt the tread of more than 400 teenagers and with this year's graduates, has bade four classes farewell. The class of '67 is the first to spend their four years of high school in this building. For them, it has been an experience none will forget. The following pages of pictures will bring back, not only their memories, but the memories of all who shared the year of 1966-67. This is the story of HHS in 1967 . . . . Page One — THE 1967 ORACLE — Mr. and Mrs. Tom Richards Tom and Mary Richards have been an integral part of the Hartley school system for a combined total of 14 years, Mr. Richards through the medium of music for eight years, Mrs. Richards through a modern foreign language for six years. With regret we see them leave Hartley, but that regret is tinged with happiness because they are leaving to advance their own education even more. To you, then, Mr. and Mrs. Richards, we dedicate the 1967 Oracle. May it help recall those happy and rewarding years for us when you were a part of the Hartley faculty! To you, the members of the faculty and student body, we of the publications staff express our thanks for your cooperation in helping us with our work on the Echo, Oracle, the radio program and Searcher. We hope that you have enjoyed these projects. We especially hope that you will enjoy the layout of the Oracle this year and that it brings back some pleasant times in these high school days when you dust it off in the attic many years from now. The editors also wish to thank those staff members who gave so generously of their free time. In the “busy-ness” of the school year, the business of meeting pub- lications deadlines is indeed difficult. The seniors who have served this year leave with a feeling of regret because these projects are enjoyable, but also a feeling of relief because now we turn the responsibility over to next year's reporters and editors. We wish them the very best! Page Four THE 1967 ORACLE fl Page Five — THE 1967 ORACLE - ORACLE ATTENDANTS Left to riflht: Shorolyn Koele, Mory Schierholz, Moureen Steinbeck and Roxie Morfitt. Each year the classes of Hartley High School select girls from their groups to represent the classes in the annual. As each book is purchased, the buyer votes for one of the four girls. The class whose candidate is voted Oracle Queen then choose a second girl to serve as the attendant. These five girls then reign over the Oracle party, held in late spring when the annual is circulated. The party is planned and sponsored by the Hartley chapter of Quill and Scroll, international honorary journalism fraternity. Page Six THE 1967 ORACLE — THE 1967 ORACLE — CHARLES SCHMIDT Hartley High School’s principal, Charles Schmidt, graduated from high school in Scotland, S. D. He attended Southern State Teachers Col- lege where he received his Bachelor of Science de- gree and continued his studies at the University of South Dakota where he obtained his Master of Arts degree. Mr. Schmidt taught for eight years before coming to Hartley in 1965 to accept the position of principal. HOWARD BORCHARD Howard Borchard, superintendent, is a gradu- ate of Spencer High School. He received his Bache- lor of Arts degree at Wayne State Teachers Col- lege and his Master of Arts degree from the Uni- versity of South Dakota at Vermillion. He first came to Hartley in 1954 as an English teacher. He became principal in 1956, a job which he held for eight years. In I9i4 he attained his present position of superintendent. BOARD OF EDUCATION Standing: Clarence Olhousen, H. L. Borchard, superintendent; Dr. J. C. Peterson, Jr. Seoted: Duane Kolpin; Harry Olhausen; Vaun Gonnerman, president; Milo Peters and Marlin Vetter. Each day the decisions involved in running a school system with an annual budget of nearly $500,000 are made and influenced by the members of the HHS adminis- tration. It is by no means a small task and yet is one for which only occasional appreciation is expressed. The job that these men do and have done in the past has made Hartley High School one of the top schools in the state. For their effort in making and keeping HHS high on the standards of the relatively small schools in Iowa, these people are truly to be honored and respected. Page Six A — THE 1967 ORACLE — STUDENT COUNCIL Standing: D. Donnenwerth, M. Anderegg, W. Tschopp, J. Peterson. A. DeGraaf, G. Petersen, K. Boyer, M. McCorty. Seated: Mr. Abbott, advisor, S. Potter, S. Getting, G. Klett, president, L. McCarty. Members of the Student Council are elected by their classes to represent them in matters concerning the student body. This group also is in charge of a number of activities throughout the year, including the selection of the assembly programs brought to the student body. OFFICE SECRETARY Sharon IVinterboer Sharon Winterboer (Sharon Swenson, Class of '65) is truly the HHS “Girl Friday . The by-word for Mr. Borchard's secretary is “See Sharon about that . . . leave it with Sharon . . . Check that with Sharon . . She not only serves as secretary to the superintendent, which involves myriad details and record-keeping, but she also operates the various copy machines for the faculty members, punches lunch tickets daily for the students, and — in short — is a quietly efficient and essential part of the school picture. Page Seven — THE 1967 ORACLE - JANITORS Herman DeYoung and Bob Butler, the two men who keep the building comfortable and clean, are on hand nearly every hour of the day. ‘‘Herm” has been with the Hartley staff for I 3 years and Bob joined the custodial unit two years ago. COOKS The hot lunch program at HHS is administered by Blanche Cummings, Lillian Klinker, Dorothy Steen and Corrine Brazle. Unfortunately there is no picture. How- ever, we are certain that the HHS student body will well remember the fine service that these ladies perform each day of the school year.
