Our theme has been based on that of an old leather photograph album, to go along with the cover design. The many events which have taken place during the past year, both major and minor, have helped to compile many memories. These memories will long be treasured by Hartley students. BROUWER The Hartley Community High School dedicates its 1966 Oracle in memory of John W. Brouwer, superintendent of O’Brien County schools for the past 1 4 years. Mr. Brouwer passed away suddenly November 26, 1965. He was extremely active in the reorganization of the O’Brien County schools. Mr. Brouwer, who was a member of the Congregational church serving as a moderator and on the Board of Deacons, was the commencement speaker for the Class of 1966 at their 8th grade graduation ceremony. The Hartley community will always remember him and be forever grateful for his work in improving the O’Brien County schools. HOWARD BORCHARD Howard Borchard, superintendent, is a gradu- ate of Spencer High School. He received his Bache- lor of Arts degree at Wayne State Teachers Col- lege and his Master of Arts degree from the Uni- versity of South Dakota at Vermillion. He first came to Hartley in 1954 as an English teacher. He became principal in 1956, a job which he held for eight years. In 1964 he attained his present position of superintendent. Hartley High School’s principal, Charles Schmidt, graduated from high school in Scotland, S. D. He attended Southern State Teachers Col- lege where he received his Bachelor of Science de- gree and continued his studies at the University of South Dakota where he obtained his Master of Arts degree. Mr. Schmidt taught for eight years before coming to Hartley in 1965 to accept the position of principal. STUDY HALL SCENE Page Ten THE 1966 ORACLE — STEPHEN FELTY Stephen Felty, English and speech instructor at Hartley for tnree years received his Bachelor of Science degree at Mankato Stote College. MRS. LOIS MOSLEY The English and journalism in- structor at Hartley for four years. Mrs. Mosley received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Grinnell Col- lege ond has done groduate work at the Universities of Iowa and Minnesota and at Drake Univer- sity. Mr. Felty’s dramatic at times, we all know — When inspired to speak, the words really flow! MRS. MARY RICHARDS Also o seven year member of the Hartley foculty, Mrs. Mary Richards, Spanish instructor, stud- ied at the State University of lowo where she received her Bachelor of Arts degree. Mrs. Richards speaks Spanish with wit and grace. She’s wonderfully clever with a pretty face. Mrs. Mosley’s got a personality all of her own — “Little but mighty” is a phrase well known! OLIVER ABBOTT For seventeen yeors a member of the Hortley faculty, Oliver Ab- bott, science instructor, attended the University of North Dakota where he received his Bachelor of Science degree and the University of Minnesota. Mr. Abbott teaches chemistry in a superior way. Well liked by all, it is safe to say. Dice is a new name in Hartley High, Well liked by all — a real swell guy! PHILIP DICE A groduate of the Stote College of Iowa, where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree, Philip Dice, physics and math instructor for one year ot Hartley, has done graduate work at the University of Mississippi. GLENN WEHRKAMP Mr. Glenn Wehrkamp is a grad- uate of Clorinda high school and also of Clorinda Junior College. He received his Bachelor of Sci- ence degree at Northwestern Missouri State College ot Mary- ville, Missouri. He also did gradu- ate work ot the State College of Iowa. He has been moth instruc- tor and boy's bosketboll ond track coach for five years at Hartley. Mr. Wehrkamp teaches math and you’ll have to admit He knows a good figure when he sees it! Page Eleven — THE 1966 ORACLE — JIM GRIDER Jim Grider, history instructor ond girl's basketball coach at Hartley for four years, is a grad- uate of Buena Vista College, where he obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree. MRS. ALICE MARQUARDT A holder of a Bachelor of Sci- ence degree from Iowa State Uni- versity, Mrs. Alice Marquardt, homemaking instructor, has been a member of the Hartley faculty for one year. Mr. Richards has musical melo- dies on his mind A better bandmaster it would be hard to find! TOM RICHARDS Tom Richards, instrumental in- structor at Hartley for seven years attended the University of Iowa for his Bachelor of Arts degree where he also received his Master of Arts degree. ROBERT LINDGREN Bueno Vista College was where Mr. Robert Lindgren, vocal music instructor at Hartley for four years, received his Bachelor of Arts degree. Mr. Lindgren’s a vocalist of highest degree. Also a bandman, with lessons— all free! Mr. Grider is a winner in more ways than one Respected by all, yet really full of fun. Mrs Marquardt is a homemaker, tried and true. Of split seams and fallen cakes, she’s seen quite a few. HAROLD WOODARD Vocational agricultural instruc- tor at Hartley for two years. Harold Woodard received his Bachelor of Science degree from Iowa State University. About Mr. Woodard. we could write a page. One thing he’s done is destroy the “Sod Image’’! FRED TANNER A graduate of Westmar College where he obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree, Mr. Fred Tanner has been the industrial orts and shop instructor at Hartley for two years. Mr. I anner’s specialty is work- ing with wood. He sees to it you do it just as you should. Page TTwelve THE 1966 ORACLE — MISS RUTHALENE GRAY BILL Girls' physical education in- structor ot Hortley for one year. Miss Ruthalene Graybill received her Bachelor of Arts degree at Buena Vista College. Miss Graybill’s good with girls, despite all the noise! We’re also pretty sure she’s good with the boys! WALTER KELLEY A veteran of 29 years on the Hartley faculty, Walter Kelley, commercial instructor, obtained his Bochelor of Arts degree at Luther College and went on to the University of South Dakota to receive his Master of Arts degree. Mr. Kelley’s been here for many a day. How many secretaries he’s made — would be hard to say. Mr. Carter can fill you with government facts. And if he stays calm, he’ll teach you income tax. EDWIN CARTER Edwin Carter, librarian and government instructor at Hartley, for one year, attended the State College of lowo where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree. AUDLEY DEGRAAF Our guidance counselor, Audley DeGraaf, has been on the Hartley faculty for thirteen years. He re- ceived his Bachelor of Arts degree ot Westmar College and studied at the University of South Dakota where he received his Master of Arts degree. Mr. DeGraaf is helpful as can be He tells us where to go, in all honesty! CORWIN INGRAM Hortley High School's football coach and commercial low in- structor for three years. Corwin Ingram, obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree at Northwestern Mis- souri State. Mr. Ingram on the field works very hard, He sweats a bucket for every yard! MRS. The contest team also received a I rating at district speech contest at Estherviile and went on to state contest, winning a trophy for a division I rating.
