— THE 1965 ORACLE — — HARTLEY HIGH SCHOOL Hartley, Iowa — edited ond published by the journalism deportment — printed by the Hortley Sentinel With pride we present the 1964-65 Oracle, a new concept in the annual record of Hartley High School. Remembering that the school year covers a myriad of activities, this issue of the Oracle features departments with their related events. The table of contents on page iii will guide the reader to each section. — THE 1965 ORACLE — Sadness was reflected throughout the school and community with the loss of Carmen Hennings, Class of 1964. Memories remain, however, of her whole-hearted approach to her chosen activi- ties — drama, debate, band, and Future Teachers of America. Her excellent grades kept her on the honor roll, and her superior acting won the senior drama award. Hartley High School and the Oracle staff will treasure these memories of Carmen Hennings, Oracle Queen of 1964. Page ii - THE 1965 ORACLE — Each fall, shortly after school begins, one thing most H.H.S. students look forward to is the purchasing of their Oracles. The selling of the Oracles is done by members of the publications staff. When a student buys an Oracle he is given the privilege of voting for an Oracle Queen. There is one candidate chosen from each class and the girl receiving the largest amount of votes is given the honor of reigning over that year's Oracle. Another girl is chosen from the Queen's class and she, along with the other three candidates, serve as the Queen's Court. Near the end of the school year a party and dance is held, at which time the students receive their Oracles. The Queen and her court proudly reign over these festivities. J. 5’4” THE PUBLICATIONS STAFF The scene in the journalism room is one of organized confusion” each school day of the year. The department’s main projects are the Echo, the school newspaper, and the Oracle, the school annual. From this group the executive board for the following year is chosen, according to the interests and abilities of the students. The journalism duties go beyond the class room, however. It is the job of the mem- bers to report the home football and basketball scores to various radio and television stations and newspaper offices in the area. During the year the class is responsible for the Flash Board in the student center and the trophy case in the northwest hall. Also, a regular column appears in the Spencer Daily Reporter describing the current activities of Hartley High School. Deanna Schroed- er was in charge of the column this past year. Another special duty of the journalism department is a weekly radio program broad- cast over KICD on Thursday evenings. Jerry Morfitt and Teena Mosley were in charge of this. Each program usually consists of interviews of teachers and students along with current news of the school. The journalism staff concludes its school year with ‘‘Oracle Night at which time the Oracle Queen is crowned, next year's executive board is announced, and Oracles are distributed to the students.
