— 1963 ORACLE — CRUSADING TO GREATER HEIGHTS May 23, 1973 Futureland, U. S. A. Dear Mother: I arrived in Futureland safely after the exciting landrush, and I’m just bubbling over with news. It certainly was a brilliant idea of our Secretary of State, Roger Anderson, for whom Karla Thiessen is secretary, to open this wonderful territory of Futureland free to the United States citizens. I must say that Captain Dennis Munster’s discovery of this beautiful island by means of his new invention, the Atmos- pheric Phylosophede, was very fortunate indeed. The most wonderful part of it all is that I know so many people here. It seems that a large number of the May ‘63 graduates of old Hartley High School have gone in for the thrill of settling this new territory. It is interesting to watch the new stores and business enterprises opening. Futureland promises to be Hollywood’s great successor. A great studio has been opened, Metro-Silver Stag. It is owned by Pam Rose. The directors are Gordon Boetel and Bob Luinstra, while their great scenario writers are Barb Wacker and Linda Pearson. The chief romantic star shines forth under the name of Jennene Hirt. The Tarzan roles are gallantly performed by Ben Wiese. Everyone in Futureland is very enthusiastic over the studio for we know it will be a great success. The funeral home here belongs to Steve Baumgarten; but Doctor Glenna Linder and her nurse, Jean Buddingh, are rendering such marvelous care to the sick of Futureland that we can’t see how Mr. Baumgarten makes a living. It has been rumored that he is in the dog biscuit business on the side. He produces “Baumgarten’s Precious Pills for Puny Pups.” We held an election last week and elected Kenny Kriens, Mayor; Arlo Winterboer. Chief of Police; Sue Brendle, District Attorney; and Vicki Mulder, Fire Chief. Lois Raw is head of the Department of Health, and Linda Nurse is Big Chief Dog Catcher. Guess what! We have a race track here. It has been called the “Strom- berg Downs”, and Paul, the owner, is very proud of the immense track. Frank Powers owns “Pass’emup , and Ervin Harders owns the gallant nag “Gunit”. We have a thriving business here called the Escort Bureau owned by Arnie Gruhn. He has hired Dennis Stoterau and Ronnie Pahl to make the girls’ hearts flutter. Ric Steinmetz and Wayne Wille, those two wonderful chemists, have given us some marvelous scientific inventions. For instance, they have patented their rubber hammer — it keeps you from hurting your thumb when you hit it; a revolving goldfish bowl, which keeps the fish from swimming around and wearing themselves out, and some ink that leaves spaces when you write, so you won’t have to pick up your pen. Dave Gonnerman manufactures soap boxes which usually find their way under those politicians, Dianna Fredericks and Linda Christie. Ray Anderson, the millionaire, donated $25,000 to the city for a large library. Three very sweet librarians are Janice Mattheis, Roma Stromberg and Teena Lloyd. I took some books out yesterday. One was a book of love lyrics by Mary Zinn and a 2000 page novel by Sandy Ahrens. I heard that Gary Bobzien, the Fuller Brush man, really got the air when he stopped at the door of housewife Cheryl Harms. The circus is coming to Futureland! All the billboards advertise Ed Dejong’s and Charles Muilenburg’s great circus. Kenny Petersen is one of the best barkers. Deena Dodge bravely tames the lions. Dianne Stanley and Judy Uhe are the clowns. Well, mother, I guess I d better close now. I’m sorry I wrote such a long letter, but I knew you would be interested in the successful outcome of all my class- mates. Love and kisses, Julie Evans
