We began iirst grade on August 30, 1948, with Miss Eleanor Reed as our authority. There were thirty-six of us to try and keep her busy. We lost Maurine and Maurice Cummings this year, but gained Barbara Heuer, Donna Becker, Janice Jen- kins, Darrel Dodge, and Donald Osterman. With Miss Harms as our guide, we began second grade in September, 1949. Two more little Indians were added to the tribe — Jon Almgren and Lowell Harris; and we lost Donna Becker. In the fall of 1950, M rs. Van Hauen was met by our noisy mob of 37. We managed to get by for one year without gaining or losing any members. M iss Catherine Veenker was our fourth grade teacher, and she was given many trying times by all of us little angels. Those that joined us that year were Marge Robinson, Margo Brink, Maurine Cummings, David Agnitsch. Jon Almgren, Tommy Brown, Norman Fick, Lowell Harris, David Muilenburg, Elmer Nagel. Larry Meinder, and Maurice Cummings. Next came the fifth grade. Our teacher was Miss La Vaughn Lill. This year the ones we gained were Bessie Green, Rodney Riedemann, and Alfred Nissen. Unfortunately, we lost Sharon Triplett and Margo Brink. In 1953 we began our sixth grade upstairs. It seemed we were really getting up there now. That year our teachers were Mr. DeGraaf, Mr. Fox, and Margaret Jones. 1 his year we gained Judy Johnson and Gail Fink, but lost Larry Meinder. Our first year of Junior High began. There to greet us were Mrs. Ander- son, Mr. Hughes, and Mrs. Fitzpatrick. This year we gained Lynn Seipp, Gerald Halwig and Beverly De Jager, but we lost Gwen Weisbrod, Roanne Rumper, Gail Fink, Terry Dodson, and Rodney Riedemann. Then we began our second year of Junior High. Our teachers were Mrs. Anderson and Mr. Hughes. This year we gained David Bruns, Terry Dodson, Rein- hard Riessen, Roanne Rumper, and Carla Ebel. Later on in the year Roanne moved away. Page Fifteen

High School at long last! First of all initiation greeted us. There were fifty-six of us to meet the many surprises of the seniors That year Lynn Huenemann, Kenneth Bohronsen, Kenneth Jipp, Mickey Kraft, Leland Kramme, Curtis Moermond, Ernest Peters, Larry Schvvarting, Larry Staines, Eldon Tewes, Larry Tewes, Marlyn Sterk, LeAnn Harders, Jean Linder, Carolyn Paulson, Mary Lou Peterson, and Joan Philiph joined the rest of us on our way to the top. After three months of a wonderful vacation, we returned to our sophomore year. We started with fifty-four this year. This year we gained Bill Allred and Gary Doherty, but unfortunately lost 1 om Brown, Carla Ebel, 1 erry Dodson, Kenneth Bohronsen, Larry Schwarting, and Beverly De Jager. We entered oui junior year with forty-seven of us. It seems our class was getting smaller all the time. Those who left us were Alfred Nissen, Bill Allred, David Bruns, Lynn Seipp, Gary Doherty, Francis Sampson. We only gained one this year and that was Deana Athens. The biggest event of our junior year was getting ready for our banquet. The theme was “Song in My Heart”. Our last year in good old Hartley High began with forty-two. Norman Fick and Leland Kramme were gone as they had left us in the spring of our junior year. We also lost Bonita Krutzfeldt, Tom Brown, Pat Talkington, Deana Athens, but gained Helen Newberry. Our first big thrill was freshman initiation. Oh, those green little freshmen! Then came homecoming. Sue Snider was queen and Reinhard Riessen was king. Attendants were Joan Philiph and Betty Schmidt. Soon after homecoming came Christmas and a trip to Medlar’s to get our graduation pictures taken. The queen of our Oracle is Becky Bruegmann. We must say good-bye to all those years of fun and hard work. Now we, the class of ’60, must step aside and let the next class take our place. The school life ends for us, but we know another new and different life will begin after we leave on that last Thursday night. Page Sixteen
