— 1959 ORACLE — SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Yellow T urquoise Rose and Silver Joon Groen, Treasurer; Lorry Liedtke, Vice President; Rosemary Koostra, Secretory; Roger Wohlert, President. “The future is waiting; let us go forward to meet it” SENIOR CLASS HISTORY On September 3, 1946, thirty-three little boys and girls toddled into the kin- dergarten room of the Hartley School. We were greeted at the door by Miss Norma Totten. The class included Joann Hinz, Joan Kruger, Meredith Linder. Sharon Muilenburg, Mary Olhausen, Barbara Tuttle, Nancy Uhe, Jeanette Watts, Bea Wills, Delores Boetel, Janaan Bryant, K DeBoer, Rajean Henning, Jolene Put- nam, Karen Radcliff, Joyce Selken, Joyce Ann Smith, DyAnn Tibbetts, Ronald Fechter, Norman Fick, Larry Liedtke. Dick Lorenzen, David Muilenburg. Gary Ol- hausen, Larry Steinke, Timothy Roth. Marnie Will, Larry Anfenson, David Bartleson Charles Cooper, Michael Fanning, Jim Jurgens, and Dennis Leth. During the year we lost Sharon Muilenburg, Rajean Henning, and Marnie Will. We gained Kurt Hewitt. We started first grade on September 1, 1947 with Miss Lila Daniels as our guide. There were thirty-four of us to give Miss Daniels trouble this year. We lost Karen Kramme this year, but gained Karen Sue Franker. Phyllis Nissen, Jerry Cav- anaugh, Jimmy Glackin, and Orvie Hansen. We started our second grade on August 30, 1948, and our tribe numbered 34. Judith Heuer joined us the last half of the year. Martha Becker, Carol Krah- ling and Geraldine Jenkins also joined us. Karen Radcliff and Carol Krahling moved away. We were greeted by Mrs. Van Hauen, affectionately known as ‘‘Mrs. Van ”, as we invaded third grade. We were joined this year by Lenie Buddingh, but lost five others: Martha Becker, K DeBoer, Nancy Uhe, Geraldine Jenkins, and Karen I- ranker. Page Fifteen

BARBARA TUTTLE — Dark hair, shining eyes, merry laughing, she's a prize. JANICE UHE — An innocent foce, but you can never tell. Pep Club 1-2-3, Basketball 1-2-3-4, Girls' Chorus 1, FTA 3-4, Softball 3-4, Oracle Staff 2-3-4. JEANETTE WATTS — Her hair is a crowning glory. Echo Staff 1, Class Ploy 3, Pep Club 1-2-3, Girls' Chorus 1-2-3, FTA 3-4, Oracle Staff 1-2-3-4. CAROL WESTPHAL — Blessed are they that say little; they cannot be quoted. Student Council 2-3, Pep Club 1-2-3, Basketball I-2-3-4, Band 1-2-3-4, Swing Band 1, Girls' Chorus 1, Soft- ball 3-4, Oracle Staff 4, National Honor Society 4. BEA WILLS — An athlete and a mighty one; she plays the game 'til it's won. — 1959 ORACLE — CLASS HISTORY (continued) Miss Margaret Kosters was our fourth grade teacher and she was given many trying moments by all 34 of us. Mary Jo Romey, Robert Schmidt, and Lorene Rounds found that they were readily accepted into our group. Next came fifth grade under the direction of Miss Jackie Soil. Three girls joined us; they were Carol Westphal, Janice Uhe, and Patty Cooper. The new boys were Darrel Bobzien, Oliver Espey, Jerry Holland, and Bill Allred. Oliver Espey left before the year ended. Loren King. Ronald Brower, John McCord, and Wilmer Meyer joined us as sixth graders on September I, 1952. Our teacher. Miss Margaret Jones; our destin- ation, to finish grade school somehow. 1952 finally arrived and we were big spokes in the wheel. Our room was upstairs and we really knew the score. We increased our number by four. They were Joan Groen, Jim Ewoldt, Merold Mohni, and Roger Wohlert. Our second year of junior high had finally arrived as 47 of us began the eighth grade. Mrs. Fitzpatrick and Mr. Fox tried to dull our spirits a little. This year Rudy Riessen. Bob Severance, Bill Hegna, Carolyn Tesch, Betty McElvogue, K DeBoer, and Marlys Anderson joined us. High School at last! Initiation ceremonies greeted us soon after the year began. Sixty-two of us enjoyed the many surprises the seniors had waiting for us. Lorna Harms, Rosemary Koostra, Shirley Krikke, Deanna Kruckenberg and Linda Lettengarver joined us as did Monica Noonan, Donna Philiph, Judy Schwien, John Dirksen, Verlyn Jac- obsma, Dennis Jansen, Ronald Philiph, and Loyd Rons. Merle Schuett, Larry Win- terboer, Don Rasmussen and Daryl Wille also found a place in our group. This year our number dwindled by the loss of John McCord, Larry Steinke, Marlys Ander- son, Lorna Harms, John Dirksen, Verlyn Jacobsma and Dennis Leth. We were now making our way through high school with flying colors. There were only fifty of us left, but we could make enough noise for a hundred. It seemed that we never gained, but always lost. Jim Ewoldt and Wilmer Meyer moved away. We entered our junior year with big plans. Homecoming was a huge success since our float was judged the best. After the many hours spent building it, we were deserving of the first prize. Jim Ewoldt re-joined us, but we lost Darrel Bobzien. Another great event during the year was the selection of our class rings, and we pat- iently awaited their arrival. Although some didn't keep them very long, they were very pretty. Of course the big event of the junior year was the Junior-Senior Prom. It was a success even though we stayed up late many nights getting the decorating done. Then came the late hours. Our theme was Oriental Gardens, and we were proud of the decorations that we had spent so much time on. We are now nearing the end of the fastest twelve years of our lives. We num- ber forty-eight now and recall the fun we had initiating the freshmen this year and how cute they looked in the green hats. Page Sixteen
