Holding their heads high, they parade around the school flaunting their status. All too often, though, they forget that it is their last game, last competition, last play, last concert, last walk down the halls of Hartland High as a united group. T . ■OF HARTLAND HIGH A Lot Of Hassle For A Little Tassle JUNIORS 89 Not quite rounded out, the Juniors have the chal- lange of figuring out their many sided personalities. They must now make important decisions, that will last a lifetime. Having to realize the fact that they aren ' t to the top of the hill, they can only wait for their time, when their 8 sides round out to become a Senior. The squares, the Freshmen, the beginners. So young and so naive. They walk into the High School, nervous, straight, and square, not yet retaining their own individual shape. Often pre- tending to be much older, and more mature than they actually are, this four-sided group has new energy that adds something special to Hartland High. Zoology - i MEET THE STAFF In and Out of School i The staff at Hartland High often go unnoticed and unap- preciated. Many of them have talents in which you may be surprised to discover. Some members of our staff have participated in sports, receieved special honors, and have interesting hobbies. Did you know, for example that: Mr. Merrill is involved with his church choir, Mrs. Whittle was an exchange student, Mrs. Woodward is active in producing small musicals, Mr. Carr attended Michigan State Universi- ty, Mr. Dankers coaches little league football, Mrs. Miller was in the National Honors Society, Mrs. Batten worked in a home for delinquent boys (social action group), Mr. Bessert likes cooking and owns his own restaurant, Mr. Biebuyck enjoys music, Mr. Eichler ' s hobby is training dogs. Mrs. Richards vacationed in San Bias Islands with the Kumi Indians for three days, Mrs. Secord is a church music director, Mrs. Vanspybrook was salutatorian of her class, Mr. Wilson is interested in bow and arrows, Miss Stack- house enjoys sailing, Mr. Denzer was the treasurer of his senior class, Mr. Taylor participates in cross country ski- ing, Mrs. Flanagan received the John Philip Sousa award, Mrs. Faust was Future Teachers of America president in her senior year, Mrs. Skurka was a cheerleader, Mr. Ciar- kowski refinishes furniture, Mrs. Cotton plays golf, and Mrs. Deese was valedictorian of her senior class. am _ I ■■- As the year proceeds, our teachers become more familiar to us, and we begin to realize that they are people too. They have needs and desires just like the students they see everyday When our teachers were in school, their activities were pretty similiar to ours: Mrs. Kotz was the editor of her school newspa- per. Mrs. Cooley was a valedictorian, Mr. Pfeifle was all-state in basketball and track, Mrs. Wilson attend- ed Central Michigan University. Mr Callaghan en- |Oys gardening, Mr. Pomeroy invests in real estate, Mr. Mishler fishes with flies for trout, Mrs. Eichler likes slam dancing on her free time, Mr Leppek was the state F.F.A. officers, Mr. Irvin plays ping-pong. Mrs. Jagfeld was Homecoming queen, and Miss Rowe often sings at weddings. ADMINISTRATION The principals of the school are the ones that determine our fate when it comes to disciplining us for our misdemeanors. Whether or not you visit the principal ' s office often, you know these officials as the leaders of the school. It is their job to maintain an atmosphere where we can learn and reach our goals. Although at times they ap- pear firm and strict, on the inside they ' re just like you. For instance: Mr. Stevens was all-confer- ence in track, football, baseball, and basketball; Mr. Barbieri was sportsman of the year at Servite High School, and Mrs. Clarke was in the Glee club. BEHIND THE SCENES Throughout the school year complica- tions may occur. When they need atten- tion it is usually the school board that handles these situations. Their job is to listen to the students, parents, and faculty and then determine what needs to be done. It is difficult at times for them to hear everyone, but they try, and that is what counts. In these photos you see: Jack Barrett - Vice President, Robert Clark - Secretary, Donna Butler and Paul Dobosz - Trustees, Gary Wright - Superin- tendent, and Scott Bacon - Business Manager, and not pictured are: Tom Green, President; Al Cummings, Trea- sury; and Nancy Laier, Trustee. Like a square wheel, the freshmen move slow- ly, and it ' s not always easy for these beginners. They find it hard to achieve at times, and are frustrated easily. New surroundings, responsibilities, pressures and challenges are the points that face the freshmen, and they must decide which path is the best for themselves. The squares must also realize that the time they share will not last as long as expected, so they must love every moment they live. Beginning to achieve, experiment, and make new friends, a triangle must some- times yeild to the upperclassmen, even though their outgoing per- sonalities surge forward. The sophomore is also starting to realize his her priorities, and learn from mistakes made. The sophomores are the middle of the stack, but must know they are important, and also that they are one step closer to the top. They ' re not the upcoming seniors. They are the sophomore class. Some people may say that it ' s an unimportant class, but the sophomores will tell you otherwise. I think the class of 1990 has a lot of potential for the years to come. Most of our class participates in everything we do, be- cause we like to see a job well done. I think these past two years have gone great, but the best is yet to come. - President, Michelle Evenson We ' re the best - Ethan Hawker Our class is wonderful. It ' s full of spirit and is bound together by love. - Craig Bor- kowski Our class used to be closer but some of them have broken away. I hope that in the years to come we can become as close as we were. - Phil Sandula The class of 1990 is a really close knit class, almost like family. We support each other in sports, class activities, and personal problems. We have a lot of potential to make an impact in this school, and I think we will. - Becky DesAutel The sophomore class is a very unified group and they show their love for each oth- er with great enthusiasm. Holding-driver ' s license in hand, a sophomore stands in awe of the new driving rule, which states that only Juniors and Seniors can drive for the 1987-88 school year. Feeling cheated, the sixteen year old can be heard complaining and proclaiming this rule as unfair. But if we can drive wherever we please, why can ' t we drive to school?, asked a sophomore who received his license earlier than most. Juniors and seniors are allowed to drive, and though the freshmen and sophomores are unable to drive, they too will one day be allowed to drive to school. I can understand how the school would not want sophomores driving to school, but if a tenth grader is sixteen and has a license, a special pass should be given to them if they ' re in a sport or after school activity. - Sandy O ' Donnell I agree that sophomores should not drive to school because I wouldn ' t be able to anyways. I ' m too young. - Craig Borkowski I think that sophomores should be able to drive as long as they have a logical excuse, like an after school sport or if they have a job where driving to school is the only way they can get there. - Beth Boloyan A m (e)IPDQ 5l£R(2llB Chris Lanave Brad Lange Scott Langohr Dan Lee Kelly Leveque Erin Linden Leslie Linden Rene Lorentz Jennifer Lorenz Eric Lutz Michelle Maas Brett Magyari Laura Mattioli Jeft Mauck Michelle Mayer Heather McCoy Erin McFarland Jonathon McKay Mandy McKelvie Becky Meader Kristy Meek Frank Melick Andy Metz Anissa Mihalek Jennifer Militzer WJPDQ@£ ©{ Doug Nagel Jessica Nehro Rodney Nitz Molly Nurmikko Joe Nutting Michelle Oats Sandy O ' Donnell Kim Plewka Matt Prater Jason Pruitt Tina Psaros Darren Quigley Justine Rathje Jamie Reese lily Rosenberger Ginger Ruona Joe Ruzinsky Chris Ryan Adam Ryan Phil Sandula Leonard Savitskie Cindy Schlatter Colleen Scheftler Joe Scheib Tina Schultz Brenda Seagraves Scott Selasky Kelly Shahan 3rian Shearer Kathy Shelp Jodi Shook Matthew Short Erik Siebertz Joe Sims Dustin Sinclair A Heather Sitko Paul Skaggs Mike Sleeman Dan Smith Todd Soja Brian Sorensen Dave Spamer Pat Sparr Mark Spicer Stephanie Stearn Jenina Sutton Kyle Tait Phillip Terrana Lori Terry tS C Debbie Thompson Todd Thompson Paul Tiano Charlene Treesh Eric Turner Adam VanTassell Laura VanTiem Rachel Watkins Helen Weitkamp Mike Welshons Tom Wilkinson Jeff Wilson Mike Wonch camera shy ®IPDQ®£ (3lIB TOGETHER FOREVER We ' ve been through it all, the good times and the bad. With 8 sides, a junior has many feelings and fears about life, and must stop to work out their problems. In every step they take throughout the year they encounter new obstacles. Every mountain they climb, the juniors attain a higher status which brings them closer to the ultimate goal of being a senior. At the head of Junior team was Kirk Evenson, who lead the Juniors to victory. The game was filled with tension, it was felt by all who were present. The Juniors scored first with a long run by Laura Gordinear, but not long after the Seniors had met this challenge. The score stayed tied until the last second of the game; the Juniors had possesion of the ball and in a last attempt to win the game. Amy Knapp threw a long pass to Stacey Knapp, who scored the winning touchdown. 14-7 Jeff Kniaz Tony Knitter Kris Knoop Melisa Knott Bob Kolarchick Deva Koppen Amy Kortge Alyssa Kotz Shane Kowall James Krey Deanna Krispin Tim Labell Tonia Lafond Kevin Laitila Heather Lampe Jim Lanave Kaelin Lander Tricia Lauinger Tim Laura Cindy Lawson Kerrie Lee Jennifer Lee Melissa Lewek Matt Lipon 7 M$nm Krista Manross Dawn Mantela Kristin Marttila f A h. - L !1 Kelly Mathews Joe Matonic Jim Maxwell Julia McCloud Stacy McCowan Steve McDonald Sandy McDonalc Derek McKenzie Greg McNutt Jenny Meissner Shannon Middleton Wendy Miles Dennis Milewski Brian Mirolla RH Jennifer Miron Cindy Mitchell Lisa Moilanen Julie Montes Tony Montrose Mike Morley John Murphy Kara Murtagh Carrie Muscato Christy Nehro Tom Neu Janice Newberry Kim Newcomb Bob Newman Stephanie Newmarch Mandy Nothaft Robb Nowland Brian O ' Donnell Tom Orlando Scott O ' Rourke Erika Painter Craig Palaszeski Keith Papke Matt Parker S « John Partyka Mark Paul Joe Paweski Greg Penzel Colleen Peters Tim Petik Annette Pilto Amy Piner Lori Pleiness Jenny Powers Dave Prain Tara Rainson Steve Rathbun Kelli Reiland Monica Relyin Mark Remenar Andra Richardson Tom Riddle Tom Riley Jeremy Rix Steve Robinson Dave Robson Jennifer Rodocker Amy Rohland Lisa Romes Rhonda Roten Denise Roy Kim Rutherford Pj Debbie Ryan John Sandula Jamie Saroli ' tone BS 1 JK I dfc | wwm Kathy Saultz Kelly Savage Katrina Savitskie Monique Scharf Jennifer Scheer Tammy Schultz Joyce Schuman iMarie Seabolt Dwayne Seeley Jim Shantz Valerie Shepherd Michelle Short Todd Sitko Chris Skinner Dan Smith Wade S mith Kris Smith Audra Snyder Jennifer Sobonya Ami Sroka Nadine Stearn Jacqueline Steffen • Robert Stewart Heather Sweeney fc --i£- wtzo@fc Shannon Swiney Donna Swiney Traci Talmage Julie Tanner Jeff Taylor Darrell Templeton Jason Thompson Doug Urbanski Melissa Usher Joe Valenti Cheryl Wagner Camera Shy Terry Brill Dave Brunette Tammy Butler Julie Byington Melissa Denton Mike Dotson Chad Flecther Curtis Hart Dustin Hartigan Kelly Heap Brian Hublein Judy Weiss Ted Welpott Chris Whisman Camera Shy Julie Wilson Lana Wilson Jeff Zaborowsk Mike Jaeger John McClain Nicole Scroggins Doug Knott Richard Miles Daryl Seagraves J. Thinking back upon our high school years brings back many memories; memories of Homecoming floats and football games, Geometry tests and Chemistry labs. Yet without our elementary years, high school would not be the renowned institution it now is. Many students of the class of ' 88 attended the Hartland Round School. One of our greatest accomplishments there was the planting of many evergreen trees. After days of digging and planting the last words spoken were, Come back in ten years and see how much they ' ve grown. It ' s been almost ten years and like the trees we planted so very long ago the class of ' 88 has also grown, we ' grown bigger, bigger than any class that ever attended Hartland High; we ' ve grown wiser, or at least we ' ve tried; and at times we ' ve even grown apart, sometimes leaving old friends for new. It ' s events like these that cause diversity in a class and diversity is something that the Senior Class of 1988 truely epitomizes, for we have dancers, musicians, athletes and brains; class clowns, merit scholars and artists. We have what it takes to be the Prime and Pride of Hartland High! Ben Wold Douglas Zimmer Powder puff - a lucky win for the Juniors The 1987 powderpuff homecom- ing game could be closely com- pared to a mud wrestling competi- tion. For those spectators soaked from the pouring rain it was quite entertaining to watch the powder- puff girls slipping and sliding in the mud. The events began with the ju- niors defeating the freshmen by a large margin and the seniors, after a rough game, defeating the sopho- mores. The teams were now revved up for the final game and the thick ambiance in the air could have been sliced with a knife. The seniors and juniors glared at one another as though what was about to begin was World War III, not the final pow- derpuff game. The sophomores and freshmen also played a final game and the sophomores overbearing strength and quickness resulted in an easy victory for them. The most important game of the night, seniors versus juniors, turned out to be an unexpected victory for the juniors. The juniors scored a touchdown in the last second of the game with a great play by the Knapp sisters. The seniors ' disappointment was evi- dent, but they quickly regained their ground by showing that they had spirit and by knowing that the class of ' 88 is still qreat! ASSEMBLY ENDS IN JUG BUST October 2, 1987. The day of the Home- coming game and also the day of the pep assembly. Whether this day sticks out in your mind as good, or bad, it will be remembered by many. As the Seniors strolled into the steamy gym, they could feel the excitement in the air. All four classes were yelling, hold- ing up signs, shaking noise makers, and get- ting hyped. The royal homecoming court pa- raded around the gym in their finest apparel. Pat Nieswinter, the senior class president, then an- nounced the powder puff teams. The cheer- leaders followed with a rap to the football play- ers. The atmosphere was set and with the first spirit competition being won by the class of ' 89 the seniors were more hyped than ever. As the spirit jug competition began, some overeager students began aggressively ripping posters and their attitudes definately shown through. This years spirit jug competition was won by the sophomore class, the class of ' 90. This day will always be remembered as a joy for some and a day of disappointment for others. 1987 HOMECOMING COURT ■• v c . ft King: Gordie Burr, Queen: Jennifer DeVergilio If -lit -f Juniors: Mike Hanna, Erika Painter «, ' ' THE GENERA TION GAP The 1987 Homecoming theme was the Generation Gap. The floats were paraded around the track during halftime of the Hartland vs. Portland game. The choir, the band, the floats, the cheerleaders, the team, the homecoming court, and the fans made this a very memorable night. NEVER TOO Gl TO HfcVf v fUN ri RQCK ' EM Students often wonder about school. Many of us have asked our- selves at one point or another, Why are we here? We ' re here to learn. Sometimes we use school as a place to gather and socialize rather than a learning center. W 5 CROSS COUNTRY Cross Country runs to the top 116 W The boys ' cross country team, coached by Mr. Eichler, did considerably well this year as they strove to be number one in the state. Their record was 8-0 in the dual meets and they won all six invitationals in which they competed. They tied with Lakeland for first in the league and went on to win regionals; attempting to capture a deserving state title. The Hartland Harriers came in 5th place at the state competition. Carl Wades, who was first in the league and in the region, took 4th place in the State and helped the team tremendously. The Harrier ' s team captains were Brent Dix, Jeff Lander and Carl Wades. All of the runners were very important, and all should be proud of the achievements they have made. The girls ' cross country team, also coached by Mr. Eichler did fairly well this season. They were 4-4 in the dual meets and tied for 5th in league and regional competition. The most valuable runner award was given to Tracy Buehler, a junior. Sandy Potter was also an important part of the team. She received all-region and all-league honors. Team captains were Buehler and Potter, and the head manager, Suzanne Adams, also dedicated much time to the team. Wrv Tee Men Take KVC Title I • 3C H rjf jL gj§il aL 999 This year, the golf team was able to achieve the goal of winning the KVC title. When they first teed-off at the Pre-KVC meet, the season looked as if they were doomed to come in last place. They started off 1-4, but kept a positive attitude. The Hartland Golfers put together a most im- pressive ending to a rollercoaster season by stealing a first in the post-KVC tournament, and winning the KVC title after all. FOOTBALL Hart and Wins First Homecoming In 4 Years This year ' s varsity football team triumphed over the Portland Raiders to win our first Homecoming game in four years. The Raiders were no contest against the mighty eagles as we won 29-6. The team consisted of thirty-two members: six- teen seniors and sixteen juniors. They were lead by captains Patrick Neiswinter. Todd Krause, and Glen Borkowski. Head coach, Thomas Barbeiri was as- sisted by Mr. Scherler, Mr. Shearer, and Mr. Capra. When the final whistle of the season blew, the Eagles found themselves with a fairly successful season. Despite their 4-5 record, they were champi- ons. The team was second in the Kensington Valley Conference and had shut-out an undefeated South Lyon team 21-0. The teams ' greatest moment, how- ever, was an 8-7 victory over their archrivals, the Brighton Bulldogs. The Brighton Argus called it: One of the classic games in the K.V.C. It was a game full of intensity, suspense, and anticipation; a match decided by two super plays in the last twenty- six seconds of the game. First, Mike Batten threw a thouchdown pass on a fourth down and eight. Then Kirk Evenson dove into the corner of the end-zone barely giving the Eagles their two point conversion. Accomplishments, such as these exemplified the closeness, dedication, discipline, and desire these young men possesed. More so, these great tasks illustrated the fact that these young football players were true champions. hMR 099 CHEERLEADING CHAMPION Cheerleaders The 1987-88 cheerleading squads have overpowered the school with their unbelievable ability to promote school spirit. What they have lacked in age they have made up for in spirit, strength, and pride. They have earned a great deal of respect from the students and faculty for their capability to always push forward and achieve their goals. 122 099 SKI TEAM Swooshing down the slopes Do you remember those days when we got blankets of snow, when school was canceled and almost all after-school activities were called off? You were prob- ably snug as a bug in a rug at home while members of Hartland ' s ski team were out in the frigid weather, at- tempting to beat the odds that were against them. As a first year team, coached by Rich Kujala, Hartland did exceptionally well compared to the more experienced teams in their league. The boys placed 6th out of eight teams, while the girls placed 7th out of eight teams at the League competition. Their team will become stron- ger in years to come, because of the great talent of the underclassmen on the team. Some things our first year racers will never forget are: Fancy pants, flannels, June 9th, get loose, Rich, straddling gates, sing skis, deeking (DQ), Kirby piles, awesome muchachos and rockdogs. 9m Q£p123 GIRLS BASKETBALL Bouncing to Success 12-. Q9P Led by captains Sandy Smith and Bon- nie Kittle (The Twin Towers), the 1987 girls basketball team had a fairly success- ful season. Coached by Don Benham, the girls placed 4th in the KVC with a 5-5 record, and a 12-11 record over all. Beat- ing Pinckney 54-43, and taking first place in districts were not the only highlights of the season. The girls season was at a peak when Hartland ' s hungry archrivals, the Brighton Bulldogs, came to contend with the mighty Eagles. Prior to the game, the Dogs chanted KVC in the locker- oom, and pounded on the lockers. But as the game came to a close the Dogs be- came silent, as Hartland trounced upon them 55-46. 099 BASKETBALL The Hartland hoopsters displayed a lot of talent this season, however, the odds just were not in their court. The Varsity ' s effort and dedication was often present during the first half, however, the situation changed as they approached the fourth quarter and their strategy fell apart. This hard working team should have won more games, several of them were close. Williamston was a prime example, as they lost by only one point. However, despite their record, we can give them credit for their two victories against Lake Fenton. The junior Varsity ' s record was similar to the varsity ' s but they won a few more games. The talent was there, but we just couldn ' t put it together, commented, captain, Phil Sandula. He further added, The cheering from the fans really helped and boosted our efforts. The Freshmen team, came out with the most victorious season. 1.26 999 Shooting for the Hoop PF f y s ■if _ m Ki ' M — ;■-,,,,„„..■B BS888HBSbSSS ■• ; ' «. . ■■■■' ■-. Motivated by the new coaching techniques of Bill Cain and assistant coach Todd Darling, the team has shown outstanding improvement. Craig C„ Tom N., and Dave P. qualified for the Class A State Tournament at the Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek. This years team standouts included: Senior captain Craig Chanavier, undefeated at 105 lbs. at the present time, boasting a 31-0 record and becoming the first Hartland wrestler to hold the title of KVC Champion 3 consecutive years. Junior Captain Tom Neu capturing his 1st KVC Cham- pionship at 138 lbs. with a 42-7 record. Senior captain Pat Neiswinter demonstrating his exceptional all-around athletic ability by becoming a Regional qualifier sprouting a 25-12 record at 198 lbs. and Junior Dave Prain muscling his way to become runner-up in the conference at 145 lbs. with a 25-17 record. Criag C, Tom N., and coach Bill Cain are the only three Hartland Wrestlers ever to be selected for the Flint Area All-Stars Wrestling Team. The Wait Disney Company OFFICERS LEADERSHIP While flipping through a standard college dictionary, I found the definition of leadership. It read, Ability to lead, exert authority, etc. , but this word has many more aspects to it. I ' ve also found that numerous clubs in our school have demonstrated qualities of a leader. Along with a leader comes many responsibilities, including mak- ing changes, taking chances, and feeling confident with the deci- sions they have made. A leader does what he aspires without fear of rejection or being ridiculed. Many clubs in Hartland High have fulfilled roles as leaders. They have participated in helping with the Special Olympics, feeding hungry families during Christmastime, and donating blood for those in need. Though these are just a few of the many activities, there are many other exciting and necessary events students can take part in. Even if your best friend may not want to join the chess or stamp collectors club, as do you, be a leader and join the club that interests you. You might even look back and find a few friends following you! German Officers Front Row: N Callaghan. R. Riedel, 2nd Row: M. Prater. A. Kortge, M. Lewek. 3rd Row: A. Kotz. S. Hirchert, H. Jason and friends did not agree with the decision to :rs, so he captured the jug and broke it in two. This resulted in a halt on assemblies which last- Due to deadlines and bad luck, this year ' s Winterfest activities were unable to be covered by the yearbook. Please accept the staff ' s apologies. MSMIlM iS MW Winterfest is one of the busiest weeks in the school yean which allows clubs the opportunity to compete against one another. The theme of this year ' s Winterfest was the Laft Olympics, which took place the week of February 8-12th. However, due to two unexpected snow days, the assembly was canceled. Despite the weather conditions, the Winterfest dance, Ro-i man Nights, still took place on Saturday night. The King andi Queen Mr. and Ms. Olympia, was granted to Cheryl Andersom and Todd Krause from the Varsity Club. Throughout our many years of school, the time has come to recog- nize all the fine athletes who have set records unbeknown to the public eye.
