Mr. Smith has an imagination and humor which make his world, and his classes, stimulating. His knowl- edge and love of teaching can be felt by us, his students. Above facts and grammar, rules and meter, he has given us an appreciation of poetry and sensitivity to beauty, intangible things which must be shared more than taught. His philosophy has helped us to form our own values, his humor has shown us how to laugh at our- selves. Teacher and friend, he has offered us his world and helped us to widen our own. Mr. Albert S. STUDENT COUNCIL Founded in 1919, the Student Council plays an essential part at Hartford High School. In its role as an organized student government, it is a unifying factor between faculty and students. It gives the members, representatives of the student body, a chance to share in the decisions which are made concerning school policy and activities. The Student Council instills within the student a sense of respon- sibility and obligation to his school, loyalty, leadership, and love of service with- out reward as well as confidence in himself and his ideals. It truly stands out as an important group in the school. STUDENT COUNCIL OFFICERS John 0'Neil, Treasurer, Thomas Straite, President, William Butkus, Vice-Presi- dent, Josephine Montecalvo, Secretary. KOLEDA The scientists and humanitarians of this cen- tury are learning more and more about less and less so that it is entirely possible that soon they will know everything about nothing. Ludicrous though this statement may appear, the trend toward specialization in this highly complex world of ours has troubled many of our most outstanding educators. The problem does not lie in specialization as such, for through spe- cialization man has achieved a degree of civiliza- tion unparalleled in the annals of history. Ad- vances in communication ranging from the tele- graph of the nineteenth century to the promise of live global television in the near future can be directly traced to a high degree of specialization in a number of fields. This specialization shows all indications of con- tinuing, as man discovers more about the world around him. The real problem lies in that specialization which regards all other fields of intellectual en- deavor as superfiuous. The engineer who is ig- norant of the crises in Africa and the Middle East and leaves their consideration to the specialist in the field of political science is an illustration of the problem facing today,s highly systematized world. Specialization has effected a closer union among peoples of the world while simultaneously driving them toward greater isolation. This may seem a paradox, but in essence it is a reality. The special- ist in the Held of communications who has done wonders in bringing the distances which separate peoples cannot communicate intelligently with his own neighbors when the subject varies from com- munications. He has narrowed himself to the point of isolating himself from society. As students are graduated from high schools across the country, they will have developed vo- cational interests along definite lines. There will be those for whom the study of the humanities will offer an exciting and interesting challenge. For still others the sciences and mathematics will CLASS ORATION ON SPECIALIZATION seem to open new horizons of satisfaction. It is encouraging to note that these students will not be graduated from our colleges and uni- versities until they have become acquainted with all fields of learning. Even our highly technical institutions are aware of the harm which can come when undergraduates are allowed to pursue only those courses which are of interest to them. This guard against specialization has even in- vaded the faculties of some colleges in America. One such college in Maryland requires every in- structor, sooner or later, to teach everything- languages, music, science, literature-the entire liberal arts curriculum. Although this is an ex- treme, it is a safeguard against the stigma which is being attached to all specialists, namely nar- rowmindedness. This narrowmindedness is becoming more evi- dent as advances are being made in the field of science and, more specifically, space exploration. Those with scientific inclinations are heard clam- oring for less and less history and language study in our high schools and more mathematics and physics. The humanitarians are calling for a re- versal in the present-day trend of education and a return to the classics. Specialists in both fields would do well to accept one another and attempt to understand one another better, for each has an important role in the future of America. The trend toward a high degree of specializa- tion may also threaten the value we Americans place on the well-rounded individual. However, it will be a threat only until we realize that special- ists in all fields should have an acquaintance with fields other than their own. Specialization has kept America ahead in the drive for better standards of living, but citizens capable of thinking intelligently from politics to space-age foreign policy have kept her free. If the specialists of the years to come can avoid isolating themselves from the problems of the world, the outlook for a continued strong and free America is indeed brighter. CLASS ESSAY SUCCESS The heights by great men reached and kept, Were not attained by sudden flight But they, while their companions slept Were toiling upward in the nightf' In his early years, every man sets a goal for himself, he resolves to follow a vocation and through it hopes to find happiness and success. Most people define success as the achievement of a goal. To some this goal is inner contentment, to others it is the acquisition of a college education or the attainment of a certain degree of wealth. The man who is striving for complete success in his life is the one who must work the hardest to achieve it. He is not satisfied to be mediocre in anything he does, he works and plans how to better himself. Often someone in envying the ad- mirable qualities of another is neglecting to ex- plore completely his own capabilities. Just as the definitions of success vary, so do the means for attaining it. One thing is certain, however, that a goal in life cannot be reached without diligent labor. If he examines the lives of the outstanding people of the past or the present, a man finds that these individuals attained their success only through patience, skill, diligence, foresight, and planning. Even though everyone does not accomplish what he terms success, he will find compensa- tion for his efforts. The knowledge that he has done his best should bring lasting satisfaction and reward. Emily Dickinson wrote: Success is counted sweetest NORMA E. PUZZO By those who ne'er succeed. To comprehend a nectar Requires sorest need. These lines express the idea that success is most important in the minds of those people who do not reach their goal. The poetess states that, to appreciate fully the value of success, a man must have a great desire for achieving it. It is true that there are people who, although they are most eager to succeed, do not obtain their objective. Dissatisfied with their lives, they still make no effort to improve them. Charles Steinmetz stated that there are two kinds of discontent. Most dis- content is worthless, it wastes itself in bitter com- plaining, growling, crying - and no action. The other kind is valuable, rare, silent - and gets things done. It consists of never accepting any- body's word that a thing is impossible, and never being content to believe that anything has reached the peak of perfectionf' The potentiality for attaining success in life'is present in everyone. Once the desire and the goal are definite, careful planning and hard work, coupled with patience, lead to the achievement of one's goal. Success varies in degree. It may be that acclaimed by the world or that known only to the persons themselves who Along the cool sequestered vale of life, Keep the noiseless tenor of their way. Man has climbed to great heights in the pastg he will soar even higher in the future if he con- tinues to strive and is never content until his goal is in sight.
