Piloted by Co-captains Bill Hannon and Gil Kidd, and coached by the talented joe Kubachka, the Owls achieved such an outstanding record in winning 12 out of 16 games that they were rated as one of the eight top teams in the state. Court stars, in addition to the captains, included Clarence Thomas, Nick Koback, Don Langenauer, Marty Setter, Tom Karanda, joe Beaulieu, Bud Beckett, and Dom Pinto. In addition to attaining such an enviable record, the Owls made it a double feature by being the first team in the state since 1946 to beat the strong and powerful Hillhouse High of New Haven. Seeking no individual stardom, each player sought to win for HPHS and not for himself. The unity of the team was one of the main factors of its success. The spirited Owls entered the CIAC tournament in New Haven with high hopes. In the first round they ventured prohtably by beating a talented Norwalk team. For the first time in several years, the Owls had qualified for the quarter-final round. Although they lost to Stratford in the second act, they went down to defeat valiantly. 106 BASKETBALL RECORD WE WON Manchester .................................. PINTO Mr. Quirk, Teaclnerr, Parent! and Friends: This evening it is my distinct privilege to extend to you, on behalf of my fellow classmates, our welcome. But there are many kinds of welcomes. There is the awed welcome for those whom we admire, the warm welcome for those we love, and the grateful welcome for those in whose debt we are. Perhaps this last should be yours tonight, for truly and greatly are we indebted to you, our parents and teachersg yet what words can express our appreciation? We could enumerate the many favors granted us, and the sacrifices made for us by you, but those would be too numerous. We could call attention to the things we have done in return, but they would be too few. Truly, this gratitude is a personal matter. For each one of us who sits here to- night, bedecked in cap and gown, there are others who have made possible the suc- cess which this costume signifies-who have offered patience, affection, guidanceg who have exerted authority when firmness was neededg who have consoled us in our defeats and rejoiced with us in our victories. Your attentions have been personalg so, too, should our thanks be personal. It is for each one of us to offer our own gratitude, not so much in words as in deed. We must see that your efforts in our behalf have not been in vain. We must make use of the education which has been ours. We must take our places in society as responsible citizens. This occasion, which provides an opportunity for us to evaluate the experiences of the past four years, is not an overwhelmingly happy one, not is it particularly sad. No, it is in many ways a mixture of the two. Tonight we shall reminisce and look ahead. In respect to the past, there is sadness, for what we have already experienced we can never reliveg but in the future and its anticipation, there is joy, for its possi- bilities are of an infinite number. And so, tonight, we shall stop and look about ourselves, both backward and for- ward, with serious thought and with youthful humor. Thus, with mingled feelings of regret and joy, we cordially welcome you to the Class Night Exercises of the Class of 1953. 134 Class Song M53 Wov-63 and Mvsac by Robert L- Pcs-ron. Its system and methods of education are comparable only to the very oldest and most respected of the private schools. The advantage which this school holds stems not only from the fact that here we enjoy an excellent and well-rounded program of aca- demic studies but also from the fact that our classroom activities are generously supple- mented by a very unusual and diversified assortment of extracurricular activities! Hartford's ability to command talent for its assembly programs is an excellent testi- monial to its supremacy in the field of secondary education. Through the years such out- standing speakers as William Lyons Phelps, professor of English at Yale University, William Gillette, the actor who made Sherlock Holmes live to thousands of theater-goers, and Sir Alfred Zimmerman, a pioneer in the field of world government, have been at- tracted to this stage. In many schools the idea of presenting a program by a full symphony orchestra would be preposterous. However, such a program was presented here only a few weeks ago with unparalleled success. In 1951, a group of state officials and prominent citizens, including Governor Lodge and Lieutenant-Governor Allen, gathered to partici- pate in the presentation of the David Waskowitz Trophy to our state championship foot- ball team. We have presented here not only educational and entertaining assemblies but also some of high spiritual value. It would be hard to equal the dignihed and impressive memorial services to Clement C. Hyde and Ralph Baldwin. Our assembly programs have been many and varied, but each has demonstrated in its own particular fashion the under- lying greatness of this institution. Our assembly programs add to our academic reputation, but we are no less famous for our prowess on the athletic field. Through the years Hartford Public High School teams have achieved an enviable record in every sport in which they have participated. The track and swimming teams have, despite recent setbacks, a record which is well- known throughout the East. Our basketball team was strong competition for the state championship. Our record in football speaks for itself. Hartford Public High School is fortunate in possessing a coaching staff which is able to mold and build fine material into championship teams. We have touched, in a general way, upon the educational and the athletic oppor- tunities afforded by this school. Now I should like to give a personal example of a unique experience available only in the City of Hartford. As far as I know, only Hartford offers to the history students in its three high schools the chance to compete for a European tour. I feel very grateful to this school for the painstaking preparation that I was given. Because of the complete coverage given history and the attention given to important details, I was able to take advantage of the Wise Travel Scholarship. I feel that my European travel is an intrinsic part of my education, and a tremendous broadening influence upon my outlook. It is an advantage that I should not have experienced if I had attended any private school in the country. False sentimentality -and senseless beating of drums are to be shunned. However, it is with the deepest sincerity that I acknowledge my debt to Hartford Public High School. I came to this school in the fall of 1949, a very plain and lonely freshman. Here I have had offered to me opportunities to participate in every conceivable type of activity. Some I have found well-suited to my interests. Hartford Public High School has offered all of us a change. to assert ourselves and the opportunity to make 'varied and deep friendships. For these, we owe Hartford Public High School a debt which we cannot evaluate in words. 136 We WGA!! M life 421 By MARY LOUISE SMITH A new day breaks--it may be any day in our young lives. The weather is spring-like, the neighborhood is quiet except for the spontaneous shouts of young boys playing base- ball across the street. This is the world we live in, now-amid society, seemingly active and healthy and wholesome. Each' individual follows his schedule of working, eating, sleeping, and entertaining. Each car on the road symbolizes a living individual, concerned, perhaps anxious, about his family, his occupation, or himself. In the row of houses facing the street are women and young children fulfilling their duties, relaxing, and dreaming of their future. This is the world in which we live. Not far-removed from this active, but serene, world is that world where the day breaks on crime. The shining sun seems only to satirize the black, bottomless pit of sin. The warm, blinding rays of the sun cannot pierce the clay-like blackness which surrounds evil. It is necessary therefore for high-minded citizens to rout out the evil, and punish the wrong-doers, in order that the tranquil world will be free from the attacks of evil. While this confiict is going on, there is a world, much larger than our own, upon which dawn breaks to find extreme suffering, turmoil, chaos, and tyranny. We who have known only slightly the effects of a world war cannot imagine ourselves in such a turbulent world. I-Iowever, when a high-school diploma is placed in our hands, we no longer live in just one world. Upon arising one day, some of us will see a battlefield. Others will be constantly facing temptations to earn a livelihood dishonestly. Perhaps some of us have already been torn from the highly imaginative child's world. However, we are certain that we shall all be burdened with adult responsibilities very soon. In preceding generations each person came to realize that he was not created for himself. Many shrugged off the responsibility of belonging to a society, becoming indif- ferent to everything outside of themselves. Others gave thought, time, deed, and prayer to help their fellow human-beings. This same choice awaits us, shall we escape the respon- sibilities which are ours, or shall we face squarely and realistically the condition of the world? If everybody should choose the first, tyrants would soon reign, as they are doing in some parts of the world today. By accepting our responsibilities, however, we need not despair about the condition of the world. If we have faith in the substance of things to be hoped for, the evidence of things not seen, in other words, faith in a Supreme Power Who possesses infinite goodness, we shall be able to do our best throughout life. To do something constructive to better the lives of our universal sisters and brothers should be our objective. Whether it be scientihc research to find cures for cancer, a campaign to erect better housing projects, or a simple prayer offered in solitude, we shall be accomplish- ing good for our fellowmen. We must not be lured into the enticing pitfalls of selfishness. We must not become self-centered, concerned only with ourselves, to the exclusion of every other person and thing. How far does our charity and sympathy extend? Are we concerned only for people of our own nationality? Does our charity extend only as far as the boundaries of the United States? The rest of the world needs our help, and charity knows no limits. If we sincerely and wholeheartedly accept the responsibilities of living in a society, we shall wake up one morning to a world filled with more good and less evil and suffering. We shall be revived by the warm, spring breeze, and thoroughly awakened by stentorian outcries of young ball-players out for an early game. We shall be felicitous at the thought of this new day, be sobered by the morning news we hear, but never defeated. We shall have faced reality with the confidence that good shall overcome evil, and with the knowl- edge that we have contributed our time, energy, and prayer toward making a better world in which to live. So with Walt Whitman we shall proclaim, O the blest eyes! the happy hearts! That see-that know the guiding thread so fine, Along the mighty labyrinth! 'I37 Um ,Um By P. IRENE ROADE A PLEA ln this age, the darkest hour, Wisdom is our only power. In time of war and nuclear thunder Lives become stupidity's plunder. The wrathful are made strong by hate, Brutal and ruthless, they relate Knowledge and tyrannical desire. Wisdom they do not acquire. Tonight we take you back to the years 1949-1953, the events, the escapades of the Class of '53. Before we begin, let's hear a few words from our sponsor, The Choppo False Teeth Company. Ladies, do you have teeth? You don't? Well, rush right down to your corner hock-shop and get a pair of Choppo False Teeth. Your toothless jaw will hang open at the sight of our low prices. We don't put the bite on our customers, and remember our slogan, Choppo makes the world's aristocratic dentures-upper plates! And now, to Walter Crankcase and Hedda Lettuce in our AHT newsroom. W. C.: This is Walter Crankcase, H. L.: And Hedda Lettuce. Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. Now for our first ex- clusive. Up until now the deeds of the Class of '53 have been hidden in the walls of the famous institution, known as Hartford Public High School. We now bring you the history of that famous class. W. C.: September, 1949! Wide-eyed,boys and girls crept through the great doors of HPHS. H. L.: Their fears were soon abolished by friendly upper-classmen, who ventured to conduct them to the renowned, Broad Street elevator. W.C.: At first, there was the usual confusion, but within days, teachers became accus- tomed to chronically late freshmen, rewarding them all with expense-guided tours to the detention halls. H. L.: And we became initiated into the great weekly musical education hour, the choir period. It was then that some of us, under Bob Dixon, Joe Kent, and Ken Stephens, qualified for second class Boy Scout badges by taking the fifteen-mile hike from first floor Hopkins to third floor Broad, between classes. W.C.: The Class of '53 held its first dance under the direction of the Freshman Girls and Boys Clubs. Boy, what a ball! They had music by that famous bandleader, Vic Trola and his 78 RPM boys. H. L.: September 1950 saw the entrance of many new faces to swell the ranks of the new sophomore class. Among them was Bob Pinto, noted actor, raconteur, mathematician, orator, and comedian. W. C.: On the political scene, Lucy Cronin was elected to the junior City Council. Elaine Borgard and Lorraine Richard were elected vice president and treasurer respectively of the Girls League in the spring of 1951. H. L.: Fashions came into their own at our Junior Prom under the capable direction of Norman Ball. Tom Mawdsley and Norma Clark were chosen king and queen. The Springtime saw Sue Gantley chosen queen. The end of the school year saw Dick Davis embark upon a tour of Europe, the result of his winning the Wise Scholarship. In our junior year also the football team vanquished all opponents to become state -- cham s. W.C.: Sally Vaggebecame editor-in-chief of The Owlet, and Richard Davis was elected president of the Student Council, Dick Boccaccio, president of the Senior Boys Club, and Irene Roade and Al Geetter were elected editors-in-chief of The Chronicle for a semester. Mary Lou Smith reigned as queen over the 1952 Yuletide. H. L.: And let's not forget that Richard Davis, Norma Clark, Robert Pinto, Elaine Bor- gard, Albert Geetter, Lucy Cronin, Robert Kelley, Suzanne Gantley, Norman Ball, Mary Lou Smith, Kenneth Forrester, Irene Roade, William Reeve, and Marjorie O'Meara were chosen Seniors of the Week in that order. W.C.: Everyone took First Aid without credit. This was especially interesting in ,Joyce Breault's case, she had taken it for the past three years. Who can forget those won- derful stories Ken Fernino used to tell during Choir Period in Room 26? H.L.: Margaret Flint was one of the winners in the I Speak for Democracy Contest. Bob Pinto and Dick Davis placed second and third respectively in the American Legion Oratorical Contest, and Marjorie O'Meara won the D.A.R. award as one of the all-around students at Hartford High. 139 W. C.: Yes, and the Honor Society elected Ken Forrester, Bill Reeve, and Roy Pearson, president, vice president, and secretary. H.L.: Our basketball team won a place in the CIAC tournaments. W. C.: Room 160 became the scene of bedlam again as Miss Alderson began another year of coaxing, threatening, and cajoling the editorial board of the '53 classbook into getting their sections done on time. Mr. Huey also deserves mention for the wonderful job he did with the business board of the classbook. H. L.: And now I see our time is up. W. C.: Yes, that's true, but before we go: TOGETHER: You've heard the history of '53, But don't go away, there's more to see. For just be patient 'till we leave, And 'twill be revealed the prophecy. zlaifiecy By BARBARA HILL AND ARTHUR T1'rUs ANNOUNCER: Good evening, Friends! Snarl Scratchell Lanolin Shampoo presents Who's Who in America with Walter Windshield and Louella Parsnips, who will be with you after a few words from our sponsor. SPONSOR: Friends, do you have the HAIR? you love to TOUCH? or the hair you love to touch! First of all, we had better ask, Do you have any hair at all? If you do, and if you are interested in beautifying it, take my advice and use Snarl Scratchell Lanolin Shampoo. It isn't just an ordinary hair conditioner-It's a WOW of a shampoo. It even helps bald people-It keeps their heads shining like the dome on the State Capitol. Human beings do the most ridiculous things to keep their scalps in the proper con- dition. Some women stay home every night and massage their scalps with olive oil. Now, tell me, did you ever see an olive with hair? Others rinse their hair with lemon juice. Now, who wants sour hair? Still others use eggs on their heads. Eggs come from chickens-so you never can tell-someday you may have a head full of feathers. Why not use our Snarl Scratchell Lanolin Shampoo that comes from the skin of sheep. There you have one consolation-Did you ever see a bald sheep? Our product comes in six convenient sizes: large, larger, and don't be too extravagant, and small, smaller, and how cheap can you get. Remember, if you are not completely satisfied with our product, return the unused portion with our simple twenty-five page form guarantee and your money will be cheerfully donated to our favorite charity. Us! Thank you, and now back to Walter and Louella in Hollywood. L. P.: It certainly doesn't seem as if forty-seven years have passed since we left the halls of HPHS, does it? W.W.: I guess you're right. Wouldn't it be nice if we could just look out through this large glass Cpointing to the TV screenl and see all our pals? L. P.: It sure would be swell and it's a terrific idea! It would be loads of fun reminiscing. I'd like to look in at all my friends from the Class of '53. Cjust then a flash of light shines in back of the TV screen.D W. W.: Well, how about that! Wha' hoppen? I can see all the old members of the class. I guess somebody heard our wishful thinking. L. P.: I see Agnes O'Brien operating one of those motor-bike hot dog stands. Her A No. 1 partner is Ernest O'Hara-Why, Ernie seems to be crying. W.W.: Why, is Agie getting the best of him with her Irish temper? L. P.: No, she's got him peeling onions for the relish. W.W.: Eddie Daniels has a monopoly selling yo-yo's to French-Canadian lumbermen. L. P.: How's business? W. W.: He says it has its ups and downs. L. P.: Rosemary Horan has just reached Hollywood. W.W.: Is that the truth? L. P.: Yes, and she hitchhiked the whole distance in just three days. 140 W.W.: Here's an odd piece of news! Willie Parker has just won the U.S. Professional Gold Cup and Championship. There seems to have been a mysterious disappearance of golf balls just before the tournament was to start, and Willie was the only one to appear with any. Strange things are happening! W.W.: Norman Parr's dream of working for the Boston Braves has finally come true. He sells popcorn and soda between innings. L.P.: Speaking of Parrs, Regne Parr has been going around with a lot of strange women lately. W.W.: Where? L. P.: Collecting fares on a merry-go-round. W.W.: A special bulletin from the Navy Department announces the appointment of Jacqueline Romanski as the first woman to become a Rear Admiral. L.P.: Yes, that's right, and her good friend Lou Stamos operates an infirmary for love-sick people, with special rates for broken hearts. She gets most of her business from that professional heart breaker, Wesley Mann. W.W.: Here are a few special sports bulletins: Jan Christensen just finished the baseball season with an amazing batting average of ASO. Speaking of sports, Ozzie Piccinini has a prosperous concern manufacturing curves to be put into softballs. He sells most of them to Marilyn Gilbert's softball team, called the Nine Nobodies. Inci- dentally, Judy Clay sharpens pencils for the scorekeeper. L. P.: Why there's Bette Watt in Switzerland. W. W.: What's she doing there? L. P.: Punching holes in Swiss cheese. W. W.: Why is it that Barry Rubin and Kenneth Stevens never graduated from Harvard? L. P.: Maybe because they went to Yale. W.W.: jane Pagliaro, Marion Pawshuk, and Pat Moylan, who were working in a grocery store, quit the other day. L. P.: I wonder why? W. W.: Because the boss told them to lay some eggs in the window. L. P.: Dick Hatch and Joan Popek have a cute home down in San Hatchville, Texas. I hear Dick is the new sheriff out there. W.W.: I also hear he's having trouble trying to capture those two notorious outlaws, Buffalo Bill Kelley, and Wild Bill Hannon. They were mixed up with jungle Jim Woodworth's gang, but now they're on their own. Nick The Russian Koback found out that crime doesn't pay, and his address is the San Hatchville County jail. I.. P.: Joan Gleba was arrested the other day. W.W.: What for? L. P.: She was speeding at forty miles an hour, and, when the policeman arrested her, she said, I haven't even been out an hour. W.W.: Did you know that Barbara Plante married a janitor? L. P.: No. How did that happen? W. W.: He simply swept her off her feet. L.P.: Here's a bulletin! An airplane pilot just sighted Mona Violette hacking her way through the African Jungle. Her pack-bearer is Beverly Viera. I guess they got dis- gusted with American men and had to look elsewhere. W. W.: How about joe Kent? Did he ever get over that mental breakdown he had? L. P.: I guess you mean that time he was trying to perfect a water pistol with a range of 75 feet. I heard they put him in a feeble'minded home for inventors who failed. W.W.: Chet Poplawski is in the same home. He failed and lost all his money when he invented eye glasses with windshield wipers to be used when eating grapefruit. L. P.: Did you ever notice the big fat man laughing his heart out in front of a fun house at an amusement park? Kathleen Shea took over his job last week. W. W.: joan Hunter and Cynnie Eckert have just received high-paying positions at Paul La Rosa's spaghetti palace. They fan all the fainting flies. LP.: Whatever became of the Hendsey twins? W.W.: Well, john is an international salesman for the Good Humor Ice Cream Co. and he's been making quite a lot of money in North Africa. The last I heard of Neil 141 was that he was living in Mexico raising a herd of mosquitoes, which he sells to owners of summer resorts. L. P.: Robert Moreau has a job with WTIC. W. W.: Does he really? L. P.: Yes, he's broadcasting nursery rhymes. W. W.: Marilyn Mead and Kathleen Daly have just landed two jobs at the Bond Hotel. L. P.: I never knew they had talent. W. W.: Who needs talent to push a broom and a mop. L. P.: Marylou Smith, Leona Levesque, Marjie O'Meara, and Carol Parent are operating a recuperating villa for worn-out cheerleaders. Right next door to them, Gil Oliveira and Gene Perodeau manage a home for retired football heroes. I guess they mend old footballs in their spare time. W. W.: I see that Albert Geetter is typing the labels to put on prescription bottles. L. P.: Sally Middleton has reached tops in Hollywood. Close behind her are Gerry Godin, Edwina Boesch and Virginia Dubicki. They're in MGM's new hit production Twenty Days on the Desert Without Water. W.W.: Emily Simonelli has purchased a canoe so that she can tag along behind jack's ship as long as he has to serve Uncle Sam. L.P.: This is unbelievable! Carol Wilson is still writing those every-day letters to that lucky boy in the Marines. W.W.: Here's an interesting society item. Mr. and Mrs. Stewart Beckett are throwing a little track meet to celebrate their recent return from Europe. Guests are asked to bring their own track spikes. High hurdles and shotputs will be furnished. L.P.: Speaking of throwing parties, Donna Peterson and Pat Callan are having a lawn party. Everyone is asked to bring his own grass. W.W.: Pete Quatrocelli is the new president of Vassar College. I interviewed him last week, and he seemed to be putting his whole heart into his work. Sally Vagge teaches jiu-jitsu at the college. It's a required subject for Vassar girls. L.P.: I heard Olivia Sceacca has her own clothing store now. W. W.: Oh, she does? What does she sell? L. P.: Either the clothes she doesn't wear or the ones she has worn once or twice. W.W.: As I look at HPHS again, I see that some of our teachers are still there. Miss Elmer has a ladder in her room now so she can open the windows without standing on the pipes. L. P.: Miss Alderson has a gavel on her desk so she won't break all the ink bottles when she's calling the class to order. She also has a piggy bank for the pennies she collects from those students who borrow her ink. W. W.: I see Miss Coracci is still trying to teach june Hannifin shorthand. L. P.: And Mr. Woodworth has a special vault for his cough drops that he so willingly passes out to his students that have colds. W.W.: Well, I guess our time is up. E L. P.: May the Class of '53 always find happiness and good luck wherever they may be. WW ANNOUNCER: Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. El Puffo cigarettes present Famous Probate Trials.
