Jkfldlldi We have been besreged rn the last few years by much tallcrng and wrrtrng about better racral and relrgrous understandrng We have had rnter racral meetmgs, rnter relrgrous meetmgs, and rnter cultural meetmgs We rn school have been constantly urged to do what we can to promote better understandrng and feelrng among varrous racral and relrgrous groups Projects have been worked out rn schools to show the contrrbutrons of drlferent peoples to the crvrlrzatron of the world and to Amerrcas greatness All thrs rs good, so far as rt goes It rs good rn that rt brrngs these thrngs to the attentron of prevrously thoughtless people, and also remrnds us all of the harm that can be done by the rndulgence of unfounded prejudrces The bestral rntolerance drsplayed by Hrtler rn hrs treatment of mrnorrtres rn the Rerch showrng prejudrce carrred to the ultrmate-awakened many well rntentroned but careless people to the potentral destructrveness and vrrulence of brgotry But talk and wrrtrng meetmgs and school projects, effectrve as many may be, are not enough True humanrty, true brotherhood of the krnd that our relrgrons teach cannot be grafted on to our natures They must come from rnsrde They must have therr roots rn the heart, and must blossom and grow to the frurt of genurne love for our fellow man from a deep and complete srncerrty It rs by actrons, and not by words that true brotherhood rs shown, and, untrl we are ready by our actrons to carry out what our words promrse, words are rdle Let us, then, try to belreve what we say that men are created equal rn the eyes of God, and that, unless by therr own actrons they deprrve themselves of the rrght to be so treated, rt rs not ours to decrde therr equalrty or rnequalrty There rs a pornt for those to consrder who have found themselves the vrctrrns of preyudrce Are they as tolerant themselves as they wrsh people to be toward them? Do they sometrmes belreve themselves to be superror rn every way except rn numbers? When, as has occasronally happened rn hrstory a mrnorrty gams control how have they treated those over whom they rule? Haven t mrnorrtres often been arrogant and unyreldrng when they found themselves rn posrtrons of power?
