Per- haps your reminiscing begins at a cold and rainy football game, followed by a colorful Homecoming Dance. Unforgettable, too, are the Mid-Mfinter Concerts of the music department. From a Little Ten Basketball Championship to a valuable forensic contribution, we are sure that this has been one of your most successful and enjoyable years in Hartford High School. By means of this yearbook we would like to recognize, and in doing so thank, all of the faculty members who have helped and advised us as we participated in our various activities. In the following pages we will try to illustrate the spirit'of cooperation between students and faculty which has made another outstanding year possible. - THE Co-EDITORS. K ,Q 'ei t A Hartford High School retained its membership in the North Central Association of schools again in 1955. For this we saluie our principal, Mr. Casely. and the local school board, consisting of Mr. Kissel, Mr. Leach, and Mr. Rattrau. These men are ac- countable for the excellent facilities and equipment which we enjoy throughout the year. Our social life and varied academic program would be threadbare without their constant efforts and consideration. Mrs. Orville Halverson, our school secretary, maintained the endless job ol keeping the class and organization funds in order throughout the year. In addition to doing the office work connected with the successful management of the school, her discretion meant the difference between a white and yellow excuse for many ahsentees. K During the first few months the Freshman were easily recognized because of their inability to find their way around the building, as all Freshman are, but they eventual- ly overcame this and became an integral part of the high school and its activities. Under the capable leadership of their oflicers and advisors they participated in sports, forensics, band, debate, dramatics, and many other activities. They should con- tribute much to the high school in the years ahead if they continue their present social, scholastic, and extra-curricular activity. FRESHMAN OFFICERS SOPHOMORE After recovering from the frightening days of being a Freshman, the Sophomores went on this year to bring success and enjoyment to Hartford High School. The two young ladies they chose to represent them in the Homecoming activities contributed much in the way of making 1955's Homecoming Court of Honor the pretti- est one yet. In the all-school play, there were six sophomores who gave their talents for the enjoyment of many. Without their active participation in sports, our B team basketball squad could not have done as well as it did. In G. A. A. the sophomore girls almost succeeded in upsetting the Seniors. Only their lack of experience kept them from winning. Forensics was an activity in which five of their classmates went to the Freshmen and Sophomore Meet, three went to the Little Ten and two went on to the District Meet. The coveted position, editor of the Orange and Black, was captured by one of these busy Sophomores, and in Student Council, Band, Chorus, and other activities their influence and help was always appreciated. if CLASSES we tex! Upperclassmen now, the Juniors have proved worthy of this title. The boys sure boosted our football and basketball teams on toward high goals. This also is true of the spring sports. But the girls also share in the glory, for they supplied a volleyball and basketball team which had its share of wins. Music also seems to be prominent in the junior Class, for you End many fine chorus and band members. Our Forensics team composed of 7 juniors, who did a Fine job, most of them advancing to the District Meet. Now we come to the highlight of the year, which is the junior Prom. XVith many fine artists in the class the theme Neverland, from Peter Pan, was spectacular but realistic. The future Seniors are well on their way to being line leaders. The Fall season was ushered in with a triumphant gridiron victory on October eighth. On that day the juniors won first prize for the second time in the homecoming float parade. Alumni and students danced to the music of Skipper Leone in a gym transformed into Fall Enchantment. Inter Se members led the way as the girls asked the fellows to the Out of This World date dance. December entered the scene with the all-school play, Glass Men- agerie. Soon after, school closed for the annual Yuletide holidays with the annual student council Christmas program. f-fe X ' .. In the future as in the past, sports is an important part of Hartford High. In the span of a year's time, seven different sports are offered to the boys. tion is not the main purpose, for other essential mannerisms are to be gained. Three of the basic things acquired are, learning to survive under competition, maintaining a good physical condition and learning to work and cooperate with others. In the last few years Hartford has reached new heights in sports. On the foot- ball field, we enjoyed a better than average year, finishing with a total record of five wins and three losses. This placed us 4th in the Little Ten Conference. Of course, we should not forget to give recognition to our team for winning the First Homecoming game in five years. The B team followed right behind with a two win, three loss record, making all of us pretty proud. Our Cross Country boys also shared our re- warding season. Hartford had the honor of being host at the State Cross Country meet, here they ranked fifth in the B Division high schools. As everyone knows basketball comes next, which holds the number one spot throughout the winter. Starting the season with a predicted fifth place, the enthusi- astic team and its supporters eliminated Berlin and Beaver Dam, two of the top teams. SPORTS XY ,ll ' . lllli. 3 Q :Ei ::' x... K. But we have more than one basketball team and certainly We could not over- look our B team. Playing good basketball all season, they ended with a 6-4 record. The future looks pretty bright for these boys. A A Intramural Basketball offers an opportunity for many boys to show ability in basketball. Many organizations form teams that compete against each other. This year the Hot Rods won the championship, but lost to the F. F. A. in the tournaments. Then the annual faculty game was scheduled, and with the aid of a pep band, the so ATM faculty held its championship. And once again Coach Cib Mahr's thinclads proved themselves among the best in the state. 1'he ltiqltliqln. of the season was, of course, the State Cross Country Meet, which was held at the Hartford Country Club on October 30. Thirty-six schools from throughout the state competed in this important IUCCK. in which our C1'05S'C0UmfY team placed a fine fifth. Our varsity basketball team certainly found this to he true as they received a great deal of pleasure in regaining the Champ- ionship throne after a mediocre season last year. Critics had said that, with the Stracka brothers gone, Hartford was through as a basketball power. But our varsity proved that Hartford is once more the top team in the Little Ten. At the start of the season, Coach Beatty was faced with the problem of rebuild- ing, since .loe Schroeder was the only rettu ning Hartford player with any experience. But the fellows worked hard and long and became a truly fine team. Only South Milwaukee was able to hoast of a victory over Hartford in the warmup games. XVith the Little Ten season about to start, Coach Beatty settled on a starting lineup of Rolf Kroeher and Dick Ritger as the forwards, joe Schroeder at center, and Howie Hagen and Dick Kirsch as guards. Rich Buchanan, Mike Buckley, and Frank Endres were the number one subs. Our first three opponents were Berlin, Beaver Dam and Mayville, the toughest competition in the conference. X'Vhen the fellows won these three games we were in. The team cruised through the remaining seven games unscathed to finish with a per- fect record and a season record of I3 wins and 3 losses. After solidly defeating Mayville and Horicon at the sub-regional tournaments, the Orioles lost a heartbreaker with a score of 65 to 64 to Madison East. B Squad Under the guiding hand of Coach Max Hilmer the Freshman-Sophomore basket- ball team compiled a very respectable record this year. Starting the season with a group of inexperienced players Coach Hilmer did a fine job of teaching the fundamentals of basketball, and by the end of the season the boys were good basketball players. As the season started, the B team lost its first six game but once the boys tasted victory they kept on Winning and won seven of their last nine games. This record was good enough for fourth place in the conference. Among the individual players the name of Bob Baetz stands out. Dick Kirsch was the standout. jumping over six feet in the high jump and doing a fine job in hurdling as well. Dave Zuelke did good work in the short distances, whie Allan Nash could be counted on in the broad jump. In the longer distances, Jim Collins kept himself in the limelight throughout the season. Only a shortage in the pitching department kept this year's record from being an outstanding one. Chuck Erdman handled the pitching chores and did a capable job, but there was no one to back him up. Fritz Gennerman held down first: Mike Buckley, second baseg Howard Hagen, shortstop position: and Bob Baetz, third base to round out a fine defensive infield. Catcher Gene Bliss, first string outfielders Rich Buchanan, Virgil Fahrenkrug and Frank Endres, and such reserves as Clem Hanrahan, Don Borlen, and Dave Haertl, also bolstered the team. IST ROW-R. The Hot Rodders, led by Don Scharfenberg, Dean Mitchell, Hank Laubenheirner, and Peanuts VVagner captured the title, losing only three games but were defeated by the F.F.A. in the championship playoffs. Then came the faculty intramural game, which the faculty won, for once without the aid of trickery. Clem Hanra- han and Dave Zuehlke were standouts for the F.F.A. while Mr. Hilmer displayed his fine tal- ents for the faculty. GJ ko A A lense moment in the -Iunior-Senior game. Senior Champs! Now four years have gone by and we are again beginning, only this time we know all too well the importance of making it good and keeping it that way! Let's return to our Freshman year and bring back all those good things. The newness of all the different activities might have dazed us as Freshmen, but by the time our Sophomore year had ended we had produced champs in forensics, track, and band. We also made star contributions to the Varsity basketball and football teams, debate, cheerleading, and the Orange and Black. For all around fun in schoolwork as well as activities, we agree that our junior year will always hold the spotlight. Our class play, Our Town, which had an unusually large cast of 32, was our hrst experience with a serious drama. It was very well received. At our Prom we were taken into an exotic atmosphere with the theme Hawaiian Para- disc. Our queen was crowned with a beautiful lei sent from Hawaii especially for this occasion. And, of course, we continued our fine work in all the extra-curricular activities. As Seniors we again parted from tradition and held an informal mid-winter dance, Snowbound, which drew a record crowd. SENICRS '7 1 4 X 'LK -24. ? 7 V H wlijq KC!
