Casely, principal of our school, is shown here enioying one of his few leisure moments. His time is usually consumed directing the affairs of the students, maintaining order in the school building, and the general governing of all school activities. When asked to give his opinion on the 1953-54 school year, he complied most cooperatively by giving us this statement: lt is not possible to evaluate the success or failure, of the school year-unless that year is considered only as being one step in the over-all progress which should identify every good school. On this basis, the 1953- 54 school year has been successful. It has been characterized by the willingness of the faculty and admin- istration to initiate studies and develop plans which will make our program more nearly meet the needs of our students. The plans which have been developed this year will pay dividends in the way of better educa- tional opportunities, and better education, for Hartford's young people. In education, that is the measure of success. We, the members of the 1953-54 senior class would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Casely for his guidance and instruction which have helped to make these past four years beneficial to us. w-0' School life goes on from day to day with many of the students heedless of the trials and tribulations of the administration of the school Much work must go on behind the scenes. We are very fortunate to have such an efficient and generous school board. They have allotted the school a liberal budget which has enabled us to enloy many of the opportunities presented throughout the The members of our school board are C S Leach Treasurer, A. L. Howard's first daily iob is to open the building and have it ready for the student body by -8:00. Both the ianitors are on hand, ready, and willing to help us with all of our problems. They cheerfully repair our lockers in ci moment's notice, even when busy doing another task. They are also always willing to help students find lost articles or many other tasks for which they receive little credit, but which make the life of the students more pleasant. Both the ianitors are very necessary in the maintenance of any building, and in a school building, they have an especially hard iob'. They keep windows and floors clean, our rooms comfortably heated, and everything in general in tip-top shape. lt is remarkable that just two people can accomplish all thtese iobs so completely, yet they are never too busy to give a cheery remark or a smile to the students. 9 l W .QM fi l 5 la fZ7' 75 14. , 1 l .: 'f l,' 'AEST' -Li .li -. 3 if KX . -I tx -Ar ll 1 Z xt all 1 I ' Q . Looking back over our freshman year, we found ourselves lost among the throng of upperclassmen. This first green year whizzed by and we soon found ourselves well orientated into the ways of high school. Our class contributions were Bob Talaikowski, to the varsity basketball squad, Helen Butzler and Mary Berndt who received A's in their Forensic work, and Marjorie Troller who won a starred first in band and went on to Sfdie. As we turn another page in our memory book, we find ourselves immersed in our second year of school. Some student participants were Mary Berndt and Dorothy Frank who went together as far as the District Forensic meet, while Dorothy continued on to the state meet. Upperclassmen! With the coming of our Junior year, we found ourselves swamped with activity and fun. Pat Ennis worked hard at Forensics which took her to the district meet. King John Margelowsky and Queen Marilyn Radke ruled supreme over our Junior Prom, the Enchanted Forest. Curse of an Aching Heart, our Junior Class Play, will long be remembered through the years for the booing at the villain and the cheering of the hero and heroine. Now our dreams have come true. We are seniors! Leading our class this year were Loran Goff, president, Jim Brown, vice- president, Helen Butzler, secretary, Marcelene Lepien, treasurer. WVZW X3 N .. Iniuries were largely responsible for this. Bob Talaikowski was still plagued with his knee iniury and could only be used for point after touchdown duty. Coach Beatty switched the players around many times before the first string was selected. Although the first game with Menomonee Falls was played in a heavy rain, the Orioles defeated the Indians for the eleventh year in a row by a score of 6-O. The touchdown came on a pass from Jerry Gillich to Del Renzaglia who in turn, lateraled to John Margelowsky. In the next game with Berlin, Harford took an early lead on touchdowns by Zuehlke and Schroeder, but Berlin came back in the second half to win 27-13. lt was in this game John Margelowsky, Hartford's fine fullback, received a serious leg injury which kept him out of action for the rest of the season. After losing two games to Port and Horicon away, our Hartford gridders returned home to face a strong Waupun team before an enthusiastic Homecoming crowd. The Orioles' efforts fell short, however, and the Prison City team scored a 20-O victory. ln the following week, Hartford succeeded in tying Beaver Dam 6-6. On October 30th, Hartford traveled to Oconomowoc, and came back on the short end of a 21-3 score. The three points came on a field goal by Bob the toe Talaikowski. In their final contest with Columbus, Hartford came up with its best performance of the season and trounced Columbus 28-0. Digger DeGroot and Dave Zuehlke scored two touchdowns apiece and Tal kicked all four extra points. At the annual football banquet, Digger DeGroot and Don Grady were named honorary co-captains of the '53 squad. 't-,L 1:0 G en, Chuc k, Lefty, Loran, sa. ' -al M . D Q f x Iv ,+A ,-. . , 5 I ' A . . Our B team coaches, Mr. Breen and Mr. Stanelle, had a tough job on their hands this fall as the football season got under way. Very few of the boys who reported for practice had had any previous football experience. In the first game with Horicon, the team's overall play was both aggressive and spirited and they won by a score of 12 to 6. A lack of experience, however, was definitely shown by their play at times and this proved to be a handicap to them in their next game. It was with West Bend, at home, and the score was 7 to 6 in the visitor's favor. In their next two contests, our Bees had to contend with two very strong teams, Cedarburg and Oconomowoc. They lost both games by large scores. This did not discourage them in the least, for in their last game of the season with Mayville, our boys played some fine football and turned back the Junior Cardinals by a score of 6 to 0. Ruben Seibert and Dick Smith played some outstanding offensive ball, while Frank Endres, Bill Boettcher, Frank Schwulst, Glen Schneider, and Ray Albrecht performed exceptionally well on defense. Ritger, Coach Mahr. N59- QA- Hartford's 1953 Cross Country team had quite a successful season. They succeeded in winning their own invitational meet and in placing fifth in the State Meet at Madison. Tom Montag, Jack Parker, Dave Heimerl, and Russ Wagner were consistent point makers. n 7.1-3,i-.11a Hartford's 53- 54 basketball team, was given the difficult task of preserving a 24 game winning streak in conference play. Although four members of last year's team had graduated, hopes were raised as our Orioles soundly defeated a Menomonee Falls quintet in their first game by a score of 67-32. The first five had Tal and Mopey at the guards, Bud Bliss at center, and Lefty Hagen and Del Renzaglia at forwards. Hartford had both height and scoring punch necessary to win and win they did. They stretched the streak to 27 by beating three Little Ten schools, Columbus, Berlin, and Beaver Dam. But as all good things must come to an end, our Orioles couldn't quite cope with a red hot Mayville team, and lost a heartbreaker by a score of 58-56. This game also left the team without the services of Bob Talaikowski who injured both of his knees. Although hampered, our Orioles still caused trouble for their opponents and as Tal returned to action in the later part of the season they lost to Horicon but also they avenged an earlier defeat by West Bend. In regional play, our Orioles played some excellent ball and racked up Horicon and Beaver Dam before losing to a spirited Waupun team led by their big center, Aivars Hacerovskis.
