DELLA KLIPPEI. Secretary .,........ . CORA LEACI-I Treasurer , . . . JIM TROTTER Eagan 7a Qaaw An interesting group of l46 likable and en- thusiastic Freshmen greeted our eyes on September 5. Jim Margelowsky as president, Della Klippel as vise-president, Cora Leach as secretary, and Jim Trotter as treasurer led the class throughout the year. Judy Matthews, Sue Chaplin, and Bob Collins were elected as their Student Council representa- tives. The Freshmen will always remember their first participation in Homecoming affairs as they chose Della Klippel as their candidate for Home- coming Queen. In athletics, Mopey Hagen's name was perhaps outstanding since he was the only Freshman on the State Tournament basketball team. No one who watched the C-.A.A. basketball games will forget the Freshman's dynamo, little Myra Mante. All of us at times would like some of her quick energy and spirit. Among the cheer- leaders spurring these athletes on to victory was Heidi Esslinger. Seven Freshmen went to the Little Ten Fresh- man-Sophomore Forensic Meet and the following helped to win that meet by bringing home four A's: Linda Harris, Mary Buckley, Jane Kloth, and Judy Matthews. In the humorous declam field, who can forget Clariee Laubenheimefs delightful pre- sentation of the Mulberry Street story! At the col- umbus Music Festival Jane Kloth received a star- red first in Class C alto sax. As the Freshmen look back over their first year in they can feel justly proud of themselves and their accomplishments. At first, they might have been a little confused by high school life but after one successful year, they are looking ahead to the next with new ideas, and with the satisfaction that they are no longer green Freshmen but a defi- nite part of H.H.S. as Sophomores. '7fze ecvmm As the juniors began their third year at Hart- ford High, they were more than determined to make this step just around the corner to the Senior year a successful one. The class chose as their leaders, President, John Margelowskyg Vice-president, jerry Gillichg Secretary, Marilyn Radkeg and Treasurer, Pat Ennis. Their veiws and opinions were expressed to the Student Council by representatives Dale Gourlie, Peter Schulteis, and Helen Butzler. A first prize float was entered in the Homecoming parade and Mary Loew was elected to the Court of Honor. This past year the juniors have shown their de- pendability and originality by presenting a delight- ful melodrama entitled The Curse of an Aching Heart In this dramatic contribution everyone re- members the western drawl of Dale Gourlie and the helplessness of heroine Mary Berndt as she tried to free herself from villain Loran Goff. This success spurred them on to greater achievement, and they came forth with a Prom that all acclaimed as a high- light of the school year. In An Enchanted Forest atmosphere Queen Marilyn Radke reigned with King -Iohn Margelowsky. ln addition to the -Iunior's clever decorations, we agreed their selection of Har- ry Rothman's orchestra contributed much to our enjoyment of this formal dance. In the Forensic field, Pat Ennis contributed to the Little Ten Championship bv earning an in the Extem- 32 poraneous Reading Contest. The juniors can boast that a member of their ranks, jack Parker, held first chair in the cornet section in our band and was assisted by -lim Karcheski and Stuart Schellinger in the same section. Another junior, Eugene Falk, played a class A bass solo at the Columbus Fes- tival. Juniors point with pride to their outstand- ing athletes, Bob Talajkowski, XVayne Fischer, Bill Chaplin, Buddy Bliss, Lefty Renzaglia, jerry Gillich, Loren Gerken, Don Grady, john Marge- lowsky, and Charles jackson. Football and basket- ball team members agree that they could not have functioned without such managers as Gene Mon- roe, Bill lVhitney, john Wfinterhalter, Chuck Al- giers, Gib Krause, Don Grady, and Digger De- Groot. Two other outstanding -Iuniors were Dale Gourlie and Betty Schnitzler. Dale and Betty were Varsity Cheerleaders, and Dale also entertained us at pep meetings with his excellent baton twirling exhibitions. The spade award synibolixing excellence and thorouglmess in scholarship was given to Dorothy Frank. The key award which exemplifies excel- lence in extra-curricular activities as well as scholar- ship was given to Bill Chaplin. We Seniors in our year book want to extend our wishes to the junior Class for a happy and successful Senior year. R. Buetow was able to recruit two students who ably assisted veterans Dick Becker and judy Gruen- hagen. These recruits were Bob Grissntan. who teamed with Dick on the negatiye and Mary Roemer who assisted 'ludy in the aflirmative, The debate question for this year was Resolved that the North Atlantic Treaty' Organilation should form a federation. The first tournament of the year was held at West Allis Central High School. The negative won 3 debates giving Hartford a three win three loss record. The animal University of lVisconsin Extension tournament held in Mila waukee was rough on the team with each side winning only one debate. .X high point in the season was the tournatnent yxin at Sheboygan Central when the learn won fiye debates and lost only one. tying with Port Wash- ington for hrst place. The climax of the season catne at Waupun in February when our team won all their debates and brought home another Little Ten Championship trophy. The affirmative starred in this win by dc- feating the defending co-champion, XVest Bend. The District Meet proved anticliinatic when the team failed to qualify for the Seetionals. This year the HIS squad was very active with Bob Collins, Bob Rosenthal, .Iohn Spielmann, and Bob Young forming the squad. Manager Gilbert Krause. Before a capacity crowd of l3,500 excited fans, the Hartford Orioles battled the Menasha BluejayS' for the right to enter the 1953 Slate Championship finals. It was a nip and tuck affair with Hartford hanging on to a 9 point first half margin. As the minutes ticked away in the last quarter, the Blue- .iays closed the gap and with only three minutes to go. the score was knotted for the first time in the bitterly fought contest. Things started happening fas: as both Dennis Carroll and .lim Stracka fouled Olll and the mighty press of Nlenasha finally won out. thus ending all hopes of victory. These boys from Nlenasha went on into the final game and came out l95ll State Champions. XVith this loss at the State Tournament the Hartford squad completed their tough 25 game schedule. They managed to hang up the best record in the history of the school. Never before had a team from Hartford competed in the State tournaa ment, These fellows who never knew when to quit had defeated a strong Eau Claire five the night pre- vious to the Menasha game. They played inspired ball the first hall and held a I9 point advantage. The crowd began noticing these lads as they passed and shot their way to a victory. More praise can be given to the mainstays of the Oriole squad. Going into play next year, we will be boasting a string of 24 straight conference wins. Once again Dennis Carroll and jim Stracka took scoring honors as thev finished fourth and fifth, respectively. The team's total for the season consisted of 22 wins and 3 defeats. The losses came at the hands of last year's State Champs, South Milwaukee, WVis- consin High from Madison, which was later de- feated by the Orioles in Sectional play, and this year's State Champ, Menasha. After two none too difficult contests at Beaver Dam for Sub-Regional Honors, the Beattymen team went to Y'Vaupun to l A tangle with the second place conference team, Mav- ville. In a hard fought overtime game in which the Orioles trailed all the way until the last few seconds, they managed to sneak by the Cardinals by a 64-61 margin. This gave them the right to represent the Regional at the Middleton Sectional. After a none too impressive victory over Campbellsport, the Orioles defeated Wisconsin High in a game delayed by a power failure. After three attempts in the past four years, the Hartford Orioles finally gained the right to participate in the State tournament at Madison. Our .junior Orioles almost equalled their older brothers record as they finished with an outstanding l5 wins 3 loss record. The season was climaxed by the winning of the Little Ten Championship for the second time in three years. Fortunately though, second place Oconomowoc also lost and the Hartford boys still won undisputed first place. joe Schroeder played a good game throughout the season and was a steady scorer. His fine efforts were awarded by scoring 20 points against Ripon. Lefty Hagen, who played only a short while on the B Squad before moving up to the Varsity, scored 20 points against YVest Bend in the first conference game. YVhile he was on the squad, he always played tremendous ball. His brother Mopey, however, was their IIIOSL consistent scorer as he dumped in l9 points against South Milwaukee, l6 against both Berlin and Beaver Dam and 23 against Horicon. jack Youngs fine floor play and ball-handling was seen in many a game. XVith a squad of ten Lettermen returning and several promising newcomers, Coach Andrews set out to whip his team into shape and try to bring the championship to the squad. Because of cold weather much practice time had to be spent in the gym. Much can be said about this squad and their fine caliber of play. Lefty Hagen once again was the mainstay of the pitching staff and, along with Chet Seefeldt, hne mound performances were turned in. jerry Schwartz, behind the plate, turned in his usual fine perform- ance in every game. The infield had such standouts as Howard Hagen at third, Dennis Carroll at short. Dave Gourlie at second, and jerry Gallant at first. Fine pickups, flashy throws, and superb co-ordination marked the play of each one of these ballplayers. Patrolling the outfield, Ralph Schnorenberg, johnny Kling, and Dill Basler robbed many an opposing batter of a base hit, or their deadly-like throws nipped the runners trying to advance. I XVith fellows like these doing their best, once again our Hart- ford Orioles set out to bring the A traditional reputation of the con- ference best back to the halls of , . A Hartford High. rf if.. The team this year was in a process of building for the future, being composed mainly of tmderclassmen with only three Seniors on the squad. Rolf Kroe- ber, the only Letterman back, gave note of fine golf to come as he held down the number one Q' spot on the team as a Sophomore. , .J 3' Speak Backing up Rolf were Juniors Bob Hlinterhalter and jim Courtney, while Norman Grover was the only Senior member of the first four. Other boys who composed the team this year were Bill XVhitney, Gene Monroe, Dick Becker, David Geddeis, Jack Winterhalter, Larry DeGroot, John Dorn, Joseph Dorn, Mike Buckley, Chuck Algiers, Jim Quackenbush, and john Spielmann. TRACK XVith only a few Seniors graduating from last year's championship team, it looked as if Hartford's trackmen would have a good chance to take the title again. The team was definitely strong in the field events with returning Lettermen Bill Chaplin and Jim Stracrka. They supplied the team with a great one two punch in the shot put. Both Bill and -lim threw close to fifty feet by the end of the season. They also took part in the high jump and discus. Another Letterman returning was Bob Talajkowski, who was a fine hurdler last year, but because of his football injury last fall couldn't run this year. Loren Gerken, who was also a Letterman from last year, sup- plied the team with a good broad eww' juniper. Loren also ran the dashes and ran in the 880 relay. Ray Connell was one of the lead- ing runners in the mile, while Bob Grissman tried to fill jerry Emmer's shoes in the half mile. Running in the 440 was Bill Dieterich, who also threw the discus. jack Wright did a Fine job in the 100 and in the 200 yard dashes and also was seen broad jumping.
