Page 51 The Hartford Eleven Despite their having one of the smallest squads in the school's history. the Hghting Orioles com- menced the l95l football campaign with high hopes for a successful season. XVith eleven returning Irettermen. comprising an all veteran hackheld, the potentialities were strong. However, due to injury' and sickness. the Beattymen were hampered throughout the entire season In the initial game of the season the Orioles romped over Menomonee Falls 25-0. Continuing their winning ways, they' rolled over Horicon and Berlin 45-0 and I4-0. respectively: In the Beaver Dam tilt the wining streak ended with a bruising 20-13 setback. 'l'he following week they battled highly rated West Bend to a 7-7 deadlock. In their Homecoming, the Beattymen lost a heartbreaker to Ripon. 7-6. The hnal tilt with Mayville found Hartford on the short end of a G-0 score. Hartford finished sixth in confer- ence play and closed the season with three victories, three defeats and a tie. The Orioles boasted of having one of the finest defensive units in the conference. despite an aver- age season. Outstanding defensive players were: jerry' Gallant, Ray Connell, Stan Sterman. Dennis Carroll, Kego Smith. and Nails Nettesheim. a newcomer to the squad. Veteran backs, Bob Stracka. Dave Nettesheim. and jerry Emmer were the most consistent ball carriers, with jerry Schwarti and jim Semler hand- ling the quarterbacking chores, .juniors jim Stracka anti Dick Dodge were fine receivers at offensive ends. 'l'he linemen who payed the way for the backs were: ,lack Xvright. -Ion Kroeher. -lim Gallant, Bob Schauer. and Duke 0'Cionnor. We have these outstanding memories of the '5l season: Bob Stracka's brilliant running against Horicon that netted him sis touchdowns and en- abled him to capture the Little 'lien scoring champ- ionship: the tie with Xvest Bend ending their eleven game winning streak: Dave Netteshc-im's Hne defen- sive work at the tough line backing position: those heartbreaking fumbles which meant the difference between victory and defeat: and the election of Bob Stracka. Finest team Hartford has ever had, said the townsfolks. Fast, smooth, and classy, said opponents. As good a quintet as l've ever coached said Coach Beatty. Yes, the countryside was buning as the Hart- ford Cagers arrived home alter swamping Hlaupun in the conference finale, Tlulfi, to capture the con- ference championship. XVith T returning Lettermen, which included four regulars from the previous year, plus standouts from last vear's B team, the Orioles lived up to early expectations as they rambled through the reg- ular season undefeated, with a ffl-0 record. The accumulated 59-I points offensively, the second highest in the conference, and held oppon- ents to 394 points defensively, the lowest in the conference. Four members of the first hve were among the 20 top scorers in the conference. Dennis Carroll was second to Lee Lambrecht at the close of the season with l64 points in the individual scoring race. .-Xfter winning 2 of their first 3 non-conference games, the torch of excitement was lit as the Orioles opened league play with a sounding 56-27 defeat ot er Horicon.
