What's New? 3 What's Next? 11 What's Left? 51 What's In A Grade? 65 What's The Score? 77 What's Happening? 105 What's So Special? 117 What's It Cost? 135 Key Hartford High School Highland Avenue White River Junction, Vermont 05007 802-295-8610 Dedication Many of us only know Mr. “Mac Hooper as that teacher with the nice camera dangling around his neck and the computer keyboard dangling from his fingertips. Yet twenty-six years after coming to the Hartford School District, this man has quite a list of accomplishments following him. Mr. Hooper has been a yearbook adviser, a member of the National Honor Society Nominating Committee, a Junior Class Adviser, a member of the Vermont Historical Society, and adviser of the Drama Club directing high school drama produc-tions for over fifteen years. As one teacher said, “He was usually involved in EVERYTHING! And all this time he had that camera around his neck capturing the history of Hartford High School. He often photographed ice hockey games and had the prints ready to show by the time the team stepped off the bus. It has been estimated that over 70% of all the yearbook photos have been both taken by and paid for by Mr. Hooper. The word “giving” comes up again and again when talking about Mr. Hooper. One teacher explains, “Mac’s a very giving person and would do whatever you'd ask. A student adds, He’s a wonderful teacher and will help you with whatever you need.” For the past twenty-six years, Mr. Hooper has been commited to this school and its students. Whether in sharing his insight on Christabel, his incredible knowledge of computers, his proofsheets and negatives, or his popcorn after school, he is a giving man! It is for this reason that the 1987 KEY Yearbook is dedicated to Mr. Hooper and wishes him all of life’s best. 2 Dedication WHAT'S MEW? THE GAME POINT gives junior Sroy Som something to celebrate IN KEEPING WITH TRADITION graduate Sean Beebe passes the Hartford Key on to next year's Senior Class President Melissa Howe Melissa went on to thank the Class of ‘87 for their friendship and inspiration Dedicated To The Memory Of Tony Wilson 1969 - 1986 The Glory of Friendship is not the outstretched hand, nor the kindly smile nor the joy of companionship; it is the spiritual inspiration that comes to one when he discovers that someone else believes in him and is willing to trust him. We entrusted Tony with our friendship; and in return, he gave us many memories. Tony liked to adopt words and phrases and use them over and over again until he got sick of them. Some of his favorites were: relax “oh well,” and Kemo Sobie.' Tony always wore short sleeve shirts, even in winter; especially his Ben Jerry's” T-shirt. The only time anyone ever saw him in long sleeves was when he worked at P + C where they were required. Tony played short stop on Hartford's Varsity Baseball team. This was the only sport he played, and he put everything into it. We all remember what Tony was capable of doing for school work. He was a very smart person, but never seemed to think it necessary to do more than the minimum. Tony was not one to be serious in class, or anywhere else for that matter. He loved being the comedian; it was one of his specialties. There were some days though that Tony would share his quick temper with us at school: sometimes at friends, sometimes at strangers, and sometimes even at teachers. Yet even in these situations, he used that anger to provide amusement for his classmates. Tony really could liven up a class, that's for sure! If anybody needed help in class though, Tony was there. It wasn’t only in school either, he would gladly help anyone at anytime. Misfortunes, one can endure in time; they come from outside; they are accidents. But to suffer for one’s own faults ah, there is the sting of life. You don't get to choose how you’re going to die. Or when. You can only decide how you’re going to live. Now. Williams, Assistant Principal of Hartford Memorial Middle School, was killed in an automobile accident in October of 1986. It was a great loss for his friends: the faculty, staff, and students of our district. Mr. Williams served the district for twenty nine years. He began as an English teacher for grades seven and eight. Ten years later he took the position as Assistant Principal. Mr. Williams was the type of person who listened to the student's problems. Instead of getting upset with a student, he would talk to them and try to work things out. That's why students both liked and respected him so much. Several high school students remember that every Friday Mr. Williams would take some of the office workers to the Credit Union and then to Jiffy Mart where he would buy them candy. He was a nice person and was your friend. You could talk to him about anything, recalls senior Carey Rice. He used to sing in the choir at my church, adds another student. Everyone admired him.” Mr. Williams will be missed very much. In his honor, a garden of his favorite flowers has been planted in front of the Middle School. Each year when they bloom, they will remind us of a wonderful man whom we all miss. WHAT'S IH A GRADE? Mr. Frank Kenison High School Principal Mr. Arthur McKinnon Vocational Center Director Mr. Michael Redington High School Assistant Principal (not shown) Principal Frank Kenison does things the old-fashioned way: he e-a-r-n-s them! This year, he e-a-r-n-e-d a five-day, all-expense-paid trip to Florida. In a unique national program, “In Honor of Excellence,'' Mr. Kenison was recognized as one of 53 outstanding secondary school principals. The trip to Florida, however, was not simply a fun-in-the-sun vacation. While there, Mr. Kenison attended a national conference on educational trends and motivation. The project was sponsored by Burger King Corp., the National Association of Secondary School Principals, and the Council of Chief State School Officers. This is not the first honor received by Mr. Kenison for his work as an educator. In 1983 he was named Vermont Principal of the Year. Hartford High School is very fortunate to have an administrator so highly recognized both in our state and across our nation. 66 Administration They Make Things Work Mr. Leonard Benoit Director of Guidance Mr. Henry Butler Guidance Mr. Albert Flory Guidance Mrs. Mary Rogers Secretary, Principal's Office Mrs. Elaine Smith Secretary, Main Office Mrs. Michelle Rosenback Secretary, Guidance Office Guidance Secretarial Staffs 67 Ms. Iris Berezin Learning Consultant Mr. Philippe Bouthillier Science Dept. Even though he took a lot of razzing about taking a half dozen high school girls to Washington, D.C., Mr. Bulloch found the week to be a good learning experience. Well, it’s that time of year again. When young people’s minds turn from thoughts of fun in the sun to myriads of formulas and rules and nervous nightmares about repeating the school year. Wait! Don’t panic young warrior! Be brave! Just follow these guidelines and it will be smooth sailing for the rest of your educational career. 72 First ot all. there are a few NEVERS when studying for finals: 1. NEVER blow one off! That's a one-way ticket to Repeatsville. 2. NEVER let anyone else know that you are worried about a particular final. 3. NEVER, no matter how much of a mind-bender the problem is, never let them see you sweat. Instead, keep your right guard up and let those old spices stir up your productive juices so that your brain doesn't become arid. Now for the studying. Do not start study mg too soon. Studying in January won’t help one bit. Face it, no matter how much you study in advance, you will always pull an all-nighter the night before the exam. Only study the basics: don't get trivial. It is not important to know who came in fourth in the 1864 presidential election. And don't get lop sided; study all of your courses evenly. If all you study is Physics, you'll be writing E=MC? for the definition of the past participle of a verb. So there you have it. The rest is up to you. Your destiny is no longer in alignment with the stars; your fate is in your own hands. But keep cool. Think of it this way — even if you don't pass, you'll |ust do that much better next year when you're doing it all over again and again and again. A Mew Attitude Starting out the season with an 0-2 record was not exactly what the Varsity Football Team had set as a goal for themselves. Going without one win last year, the returning players had a lot of weight on their shoulders to unload. We were excited to play: we had a new attitude, and we knew that we could do well. recalls senior Running Back Brian Campbell. Campbell had a total of more than 1000 yards rushing for a team high and a great personal success. Under first year coach Mike Stone, the team, including 17 seniors, wasn’t sure at first. “We didn't really know about those triple sessions in August, says senior Tackle James Stein metz, but now we realize it's the best thing we've ever done.” Losing the first two games was not enough to stop the Canes as they came back to win eight straight and the Division II Championship Title. Quarterback Noel The General Guar-mo and co-captains Todd Bebeau, Sean Beebe. Brian Campbell and Lenny Gabourel led their team to an 8-2 record and an exciting 14-0 victory over Winooski. Other seniors contributing to this incredible season included Jason Rouillard, Matt lott, Andrew Conner, Bob Rule. Mark Nichols. Keith Friend, Chris Brousseau, James Steinmetz, Sean Bettis. Mike Oakes, Keith Hatfield, and Rob Hebert. Seniors Sean Bettis. Brian Campbell and James Steinmetz were honored to be among those selected to play in this year's Shriners’ Bowl at Dartmouth. As the Varsity Field Hockey season came to a 1-7-5 close, the girls had broken a 3 year, 33 game losing streak. Just six minutes into the game against Spring-field. Senior Marcia Nadeau gained control of the ball and put it into the net. Strong defense kept the Cosmos away from goalie Jen Kil-bourne for the rest of the game. In her first Varsity start, Jen came up with 12, often spectacular saves. Coach Kathy Batchelder recalls I felt it was important that we start with a win, and we did. That should really give us a boost for the rest of the season. The girls were very happy — quite excited. It took quite a few minutes for everyone to calm down afterward.” The three senior captains Carol Cantore, Shelley Hall and Marcia Nadeau expressed pride in that accomplishment. Carol described the feeling of winning as a “release of everything we were feeling. It was like winning the Championship! In addition to the captains, other senior members included Mary Alderfer, Karen Bassett, Sandy Fay, Kari Harris, Tracey Heil, Lisa Spaulding, Kristen Alexander and Melissa Gen-dron. Even though the year started out with a lot of newcomers and some people simply using the opportunity to get into shape for basketball. Coach Roger Maynard explains, there were no maior surprises as to how the year turned out. The girls' team met with success and qualified for the State Meet with 6 wins and 2 losses. Their best meet was the one with Newport,” says Coach Hagen. Some of their stronger runners that day were seniors Jim Colby and Brett McCoy. Despite her good showing, Jen Adams admits she should have run more during the summer to get in better shape. A lot of people think it's easy running three miles every day, but it’s not. It’s hard work!” In addition to Jen, the girls' team will be losing some of its better runners including seniors Suzanne Dandeneau and Patty Eck. Once the team scored their first goal in the game, they would become over-confident; then when the other team started scoring, Hartford just gave up, explains senior Steve Enos. The team played Bellows Falls twice winning both games 2-1. Sophomore Jeremy Perkins, the Canes' high scorer, brought in 3 of the 4 goals. In the victory over Rutland, with 5:30 remaining in the second overtime, Jeremy dropped in the game's only point. Unfortunately, Jeremy doesn't plan to play soccer next year. I'm going out for football because you don’t get anywhere in Hartford with soccer. It's played just for fun. Despite the disappointment, there are signs of a brighter future for the Canes. For one, the 3-10 record was an improvement over last year's single victory. Coach Steve Sass, who played professionally for the New York Cosmos, had high hopes going into the season. My hope for this year is for us to play as a team and work well together. We're still very young and it's going to take a while to develop a feel for the game. The team improved from last year because of the coaches, and the players had better attitudes, explains senior David Bouthilher. “These coaches knew what they were doing and improved the team's skills a lot, adds Enos. Senior Chris Tremblay was also among the seven returning lettermen. Soccer One For Four And Four For All Stars With 12 seniors making up the bulk of the team, the Hartford Hockey Team once again proved that they are a powerful force in the Division II league finishing 17-3 overall, 16-2 in the league, and taking Runner-up in the State Finals. Under the motivation of captains Mike Lovering, Todd Bebeau and Keith Friend, the Canes powered their way through practices, pushing themselves to the limit. Each game was im portant, and they played to prove to themselves that they could not be beaten. Hartford finished second in the league behind undefeated MSJ and were seeded second going into the playoffs. For a week and a half, the Canes practiced hard, getting ready to square off against the Middlebury Tigers. The game was back and forth, and by the third period the score was tied 4 4. The Canes knew they had to give all they had left and they did. Hartford showed everyone what they are known for, and with two goals from Bill Hillard and Mike Lovering, Hartford was on its way to the Vermont Division II State Finals for the fourth consecutive year. And what would a Final be if MSJ wasn't there? Yes, this was a hat trick year for the Canes, squaring off against MSJ in the Finals for the third year in a row. The game was intense, but Hartford ran into trouble early going down two goals in the first period. Senior Todd Bebeau made it 2-1, but MSJ kept the pressure on and the Canes couldn't hold them off. The Final ended 6-3, and the hope for a State Championship was gone. Although Hartford didn’t win the title, they did accomplish something very important: they pulled together as a team. Even when down, they were up in their own minds, and that’s what counted. At the banquet, each player received a trophy engraved with the team’s record for the last four years that the graduating seniors had been in the High School. It was a remarkable 75-13-1. For four seniors, the season wasn’t over quite yet. Mike Lovering, David Bouthillier, Todd Bebeau and James Steinmetz were selected to play in the Vermont Rotary All-Star Hockey Game. Even though the Harris Team lost 9-3, Mike explains, That didn’t really matter. We didn’t have to prove anything out there; it was just for fun. Only three were on the team at the beginning of the season. Brett McCoy, walked off during practice, returned a few days later, but was later declared academically ineligible. That’s not how it happened though. The season ended with a disappointing 4-8 record. Team members admit they had plenty of chances each game to take charge but repeatedly failed to do so. Errors in the field and a lack of power hitting were the primary culprits. “We just beat ourselves, describes Assistant Coach George Gabourel. HOMECOMING '86 Some say that the two nights previous Hartford's bonfire were the most fun. The seniors met at the school in their old clothes and then dispersed to collect wood. The railroad and the golf course, unknowingly, donated to the cause as did Woodstock High School when they were kind enough to give their field hockey bench. Seniors Mike Laraway and Chris Jordan agreed to sleep out Thursday night to protect the pile of wood that had been started. Mike said, “I'm not going to let those greasers come burn this down. They did a good job because the wood was still there in the morning. On Friday, September 26, the seniors were released from classes at noon to start building the bonfire. Trailers of palettes donated by PSC Foods were unloaded and students' trucks traveled back and forth from the White River Paper Company. Finishing touches were put on the wood. Nick names, years of graduation, initials and team names were spray painted on boards and tossed onto the pile. The evening, the wood was doused with ten gallons of kerosene. Captains from the fall sports teams were given torches and, as the band played, they ran to light the fire. Homecoming More Than Meets The Eye! While the fire burned, the crowd’s attention was turned toward the pep rally. It started off with the captains saying a little bit about their team and the season. Next, some senior girls did a cheer to fire up class rivalry. The last event was a skit and song dedicated to the football team by the junior class. One of the participants in the skit, Wendy Burt, explained, Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. I think it's fun to get everyone psyched up for the football game; it really shows how much spirit HHS has. Afterwards, all the classes had a yell-off ending in a close call between juniors and seniors. Many people, other than students, remained near the bonfire, enjoying the warmth of the fire and of being with friends. Senior Holly Stephens commented, “It was our last bonfire and it was great! A dance followed with the band Rockslide playing popular songs. During a break for the band, senior football player Sean Beebe described the dance as Awesome! I love it!” Like every other year, there was a bonfire; and like every other year, there were parties to follow. When asked if she had attended any parties that night, senior Jennifer Luce said she and Ann Lemery Had our own party; it was great! There were some complaints concerning the fact that only seniors were dismissed early, that the skits were boring, or that they didn't like the school band; but for those few people who didn’t enjoy the evening, there were many more who thought that it was a great success. Cause no man is an island, no, no one can stand alone, And since the time I've met you, together we have grown, And forever we’ll remember the way we are today, The future lies before us and now we’re on our way. But now times are changin’ and I hate to say, Chances are we’ll all go separate ways, And anything I may have done or anything I might do, I know I owe a ; So good luck where you may go or with what you do, You may never think of me, but I will think of you With every day and every move that I make in my life. Cause no man is an island, no, no one can stand alone, And since the time I’ve met you, together we have grown, And forever we’ll remember the way we are today, The future lies before us and now we're on our way. — Jason Cann 128 Graduation SEAM BEEBE Semor Class President 'And Forever We'l Remember SARA MUNROC Valedictorian “We've Grown Together' RICHARD RE11Y 3rd Hghest Ranting Graduate We Are Today Spring Musical 131 Tm Bud Frump Mr Bigley’s NEPHEW!’ Grrroundhog Rip!
