Before coming to Hartford, Miss Drew taught in Bennington, Vermont; Greenfield, Massachusetts; and at Bradford Academy in Vermont. All this makes for a combined total of thirty-three years service. Many people are aware that Miss Drew's interests include golf, but not many know she has been known to put on cross country skiis; and, rumor has it, she has even tried downhill skiing. Miss Drew also enjoys travelling and has visited Hawaii and Europe. She is a graduate and fanatical alumnus of Trinity College in Burlington. The '86 Key Yearbook pays special tribute to a woman who has dedicated many years to educating young people. Her patience, faith, ready smile and overall devotion to education should serve as a good example to all of us in setting standards for a successful and meaningful life. Since coming to Hartford in 1971, Miss Drew has welcomed hundreds and hundreds of freshmen to the High School in her English 9 classes. For these years, we thank you. Miss Drew, and wish you happiness in all those to come. Dedication Signs Of The Times U. 4 PASSAGE TC y . Extracurricular Signs Take A Good Look ... ■.. because it may very well be your last look at Hartford High School as we have come to know it. As soon as the ground began to show signs of thawing, bulldozers and backhoes moved in and clawed at the earth behind the building. The excitement often drew crowds of students and staff who assumed the responsibility of daily inspecting the progress. This was just the first of many steps needed to complete the anticipated $1,410,000 addition. A new library, increased and improved facilities for the Science Department, expanded space for art and music classes, and several other new areas are all in the plans. The new library will be one of the more dynamic areas of change. Located at the front of the second floor, it will create an attractive overhang above the entrance by the cafeteria. Sixty percent more floor space, a greatly expanded collection of volumes, and seating for ten percent of the student body will all be a part of the new offerings. The present library will be converted into two new classrooms. The Science Department will also undergo major adjustments. Currently, facilities are poorly ventilated, lack required chemical storage space and are inadequate in serving the growing number of science students. Two new, fully equipped labs will be added for next year's classes. Being tripled in size is the Art Department. Its present 900 square feet can not properly handle clay kiln work or allow for the needed ventilation. The demand for an enlargement is partly a result of the addition of one Fine Art credit required of all 1989 Hartford graduates. That Fine Art credit may also be earned by enrolling in the Band or a choral class. In previous years, the Band has met in the Middle School and the Chorus program has often been forced to alter its schedule due to other activities requiring use of the auditorium. Partial enclosure of the courtyard will provide this badly needed space. These are the major changes in Signs Of The Times store for the High School. Additional space will be used toward five other classrooms and a new computer lab. Areas for parent-teacher-student conferences and small group meetings will also now be more available. In addition, nearly 300 square feet will be converted into a health suite for a nurse. Twenty-six years after the original construction of the High School, at a time when parents and educators alike are looking for excellence in their schools, Hartford continues to grow and strive to meet the needs of its students. These changes comprise just one of the many Signs of the Times at HHS. Signs Of The Times CMflllu More Silly Signs is it true that Seniors have a mouth fetish? Silly Seniors In Memory Of ... Heidi Martin 1968 - 1984 There will be a benediction. There will be many proud and happy hearts. There will be words of praise and solemn words of advice. There will be tall graduates walking to the platform to receive their recognition, Then there will be one minute of silence, because you will not be there. Your graduation was at a different time, into another dimension. Sleep, on, O Hartford graduate of '86. Sleep on, because your healing ministry will not be of this earth. -Rae Plick Heidi was a very good friend who had the power to make people laugh and feel happy; we had a lot of good times together. She had an excellent way with words and was able to get us out of trouble on quite a few occasions. I still miss her very much, as I know a lot of others do. 1 will always remember Heidi as a good friend and will never forget what her friendship meant to me. -Megan Hunt 20 Senior Dedication New Friends . . . Sylvia Christiansen Mars - La - Tour - SH. 15 2900 Oldenburg West Germany The students were the best, was how Sylvia Christiansen enthusiastically described Hartford High School. As an exchange student from West Germany, Sylvia chose to come to the United States because of the good relations between our two countries. Sylvia claimed that English came easily for her, but there were several adjustments that she had not expected. The most difficult of these was adapting to a longer school day. When asked, Sylvia explained that Typing was her favorite class at Hartford because it was something that I had never done before. Sylvia was pleased to discover that H.H.S., unlike the German schools, sponsors a sports program. She eagerly took advantage of this and joined the School's Ski Team. Sylvia also participated in the Drama and Debate clubs. During her visit in Vermont, Sylvia stayed with the family of Kristi Ballou. She wished to thank them for all that they did for her. 'They were great, she added. She returned to her home and much missed family and friends in July of this year. Sylvia was a welcomed member of the Class of '86, and we hope that she takes with her many pleasant memories of her new American friends and her good times at Hartford. Thierry Leclercq 20Av. Wagram 1338 Lasne - Maransart Belgium Tel: 02 6332036 $ J Belgium beer was one of the things that Thierry Leclercq said he missed most about his home in Waterloo, Belgium. Sponsored by the Rotary, Thierry made the decision to come to the U.S. because he wanted to improve his usage of the English language. Thierry had many opportunities to develop his communication skills. During his first three months in Vermont, he had a lot of trouble understanding teachers and television. He claims he especially had trouble understanding students when they talked with gum and candy in their mouths. But with time, he saw much progress. The class that Thierry feels he most benefited from was Developmental Writing. Once he understood the assignment, he found it very challenging. Theirry asserted that students and teachers have much friendlier relations here than in Belgium. Another condition at Hartford that Thierry found fa-ftf vorable was the school sponsored sports; Thierry became a welcomed member of our Ski Team. In Belgium, Thierry enjoyed wind-surfing p and leading a local Boy Scout troop. While at Hartford, Thierry put another of his interests, photo-raphy, to use for the yearbook staff. He served as this year's Photography Editor, and his skills were greatly appreciated. Thierry lived with the family of LeAnn LaBounty whom he wanted to thank very much for all their help. He returned to Belgium this summer. Thierry will be remembered by the Class of '86 for his eagerness to learn and his delightful sense of humor. Foreign Exchange Students 21 Tom Baird Jonathan C. Senior Favorites Paradise I Through their commendable teamwork and effort, the Class of '86 pulled together to turn Hanley Gym into Paradise! With Adam Nelson's drawing in hand, Chaun Janisse organized the decorating committee. Jill Lepisko, Nick Eastman, Jeff Rector, Jennifer Stebbins, Andy Cimis, Michael Sauer, Wendy Bettis, Doug Josler, Amanda Bu-shor, Jennifer Truax, Mr. Lihatsh, and countless others spent many long hours at the task. But by nightfall on May 3rd, 1985, the transformation was complete. A pastel canopy of streamers and silver stars enclosed the dancers while colored balloons hovered around the cascading silver and blue water. Music was provided by the five piece band, Downpour. While the theme song, Just Between You and Me, was played, the Junior girls and their escorts paraded around the dance floor in view of the gathered crowd. Downpour members selected Ellen Smith as the 1985 Prom Queen and Danielle Dow, Chauntel Janisse, Jenny Severance and Jennifer Stebbins as her court. 1984 Queen Candi Persey presented the crown to Ellen. Although the prom ended at midnight, students gathered at Jon Barwood's house to complete the exciting evening with a small bonfire, refreshments, and more dancing. Creativity, enthusiasm, romance, and maybe a touch of magic fused that one evening at Hartford to create a Paradise of heavenly memories for all who attended. 1985 JUNIOR PROM COURT: Jon Blanchard, Danielle Dow, Jeff Gaudette, Jennifer Stebbins Ellen Smith, Tom Baird, Chauntel Janisse, Andrew Cimis, Jenny Severance, Sean Bebee. This year, we began to make more friends and look forward to being Upperclassmen. FRONT ROW: Treasurer Rachel Johnson, Secretary Jen Devost, Vice President Christie Pippin, President Kelley Donahue. We were worried by the stories about freshmen initiation but were relieved to find that the rumors that we would get our heads stuck in the toilets weren't true. We were labeled the peons and lowlifes of the school, but we found a way to deal with it. We adjusted to the High School routine and learned how to ignore the flack from upperclassmen. Separating the men from the boys (and the women from the girls) was tough to do at Hartford's First Annual Close-Up Basketball Game. On March 7th, the Varsity Club and GAA took on a select team of male and female faculty members. The men played a good strong game, while the women made up for their lack of finesse with their exquisite punked out attire! Nineteen seniors had graduated, and three of the returnees were declared ineligible leaving gaping holes to be filled. In addition, only six of the candidates had prior Varsity game experience. Yet, of the season s nine games, we were only out of one at the half. During the season, we lost all nine games, but in the process built a foundation for the future. Based on our returning lettermen and our opponents' losses through graduation, we should have a banner year in '86. Much credit is due our seniors. Captains Pat Britnell and Gordon Cruz, Tom Baird, Loren Cameron, Darryl Herrick, Tye Olson and Mark Woodward held the team together and helped so much in building for the future. It isn't easy to go out there day after day and game after game being the underdogs. Nobody quit, and that's credit to the men who played so hard and never had too much to show for it except the knowledge that better days were coming. Keeping these in mind allowed the guys to stay in the game and perform well on the field despite their 13-1 record. Mini felt that Hartford's opposition in the Connecticut Valley was highly skilled and much stronger than his team. The intensity of facing such stiff competition had its effect on the team members. It forced them to learn and improve throughout the season and led them to their victory over Bellows Falls. Admittedly, after losing seven seniors, the '85 team was weaker than last year's squad; but according to Coach Mini regarding their attitude, they were the best bunch of players I've ever coached They worked hard and did as they were asked.'' Senior Captains Andy Cimis, Jim Punger, and Joel Spaulding were especially to be congratulated for doing a great job.'' It was a disappointing final season for seniors Amanda Bushor, Beth Flanagan, Julie Howe, and Jennifer and Jodi Stebbins. Even so, team members repeatedly dug down defensively to hold most of their opponents to only one or two goals. Despite the frustration that came with each loss and some unfair media coverage, the team managed to keep their heads up and to support each other through it all — showing everyone that they really were winners! Setting The Pace Everyone will remember that hot September day we ran up the White River to a shallow swimming spot and how great it felt to cool off. We looked for variety in our afternoons to keep everyone psyched. Our boys had a tough time winning meets; nevertheless, they all made good progress through the season. The top boys' team finisher for the past two seasons has been senior Drew Steadman, who finished 15th in the State Meet and qualified for the Meet of Champions for the second year. Our girls' squad posted an excellent 7 wins - 2 losses record in regular season races. The girls should continue to do very well next year as most runners are returning. Running has really caught on with more area road races and as many runners are finding it is a lifelong athletic pursuit. The first goal was obtained as the Gales received a number six seed and a bye into the quarterfinal round of the playoffs. However, the Gales fell one game short of the second goal, finishing with a 10-11 record. The team had a rocky start because, once again, they had to get used to a new coach and new philosophy. Coach Crawford, or Scuffy , introduced the theme of together to the girls. While the offense was somewhat inconsistent, the defense prevailed by keeping most teams under 35 points per game. The offense improved throughout the season as the team jelled together mostly through the leadership of the seniors: Colleen O'Donnell, Shelley Hosmer, and Jenny Severance. When the final buzzer went off in the quarter-final game of the state playoffs, the Gales had fallen two points short of that semi-final berth. Special thanks goes to Coach Crawford for her assistance in writing this article. Her insight into the team's effort and spirit is appreciated. FRONT ROW: J. Severance. S. Hosmer (Capt), C. That's how Coach Foster summed up Hartford's Cross Country Ski Team's year. This was a historic year for X-C skiing as it marked the first year in which ''skating'' was the primary technique for all racers. Gone were the diagonal stride and kick waxing. Our senior boys: Kevin Berry, Matt Jarvis, Thierry LeClerq, and Rick Russell adapted well to skating, even though X-C skiing was a new sport for them all. The boys' team qualified for the State Meet at Breadloaf and finished the season with excellent races by everyone. Our girls missed qualifying for the States by one position in the final relay. The girls, including senior Sylvia Christiansen, did, however, put out their best efforts of the season. FRONT ROW: S Christiansen, J. Adams, K Burns. J Adams, P. Eck, J. Carbee BACK ROW: D. According to Coach Kobe, members grew in one fashion or another; whether in maturity of personality or technical skill, our progress was significant. Strong performances were given by Captains Adam Nelson and Julie Howe, and by seniors Amanda Bu-shor and Beth Flanagan. Juniors displayed their experience with respectable finishes by Mary Al-derfer, Kristen Alexander, Karen Bassett, Chris Brousseau, Kevin Laro and Jim Martin. Sophomore standouts Sarah Bar-wood, Melissa Howe, David Mar-cotte and Jason Racicot and Freshman Keith Morse showed consistency and a developing skill which should evolve into a squad of accomplished racers in the years to come. After losing seven seniors from last year, many people doubted whether this team would again prove to be a big winner. The shadow of the past season, however, was erased when our 1987 squad challenged the strong MSJ team at the State Hockey Championship at Gutter-son Field House on February 24th. According to Coach Lovering, our young men proved to be champions even in their final defeat. The first playoff game pitted the Gales against Lamoille, a team that defeated Hartford in the playoffs last season. This year, however, the Gales were victorious in taking a 9-8 win. From there, the team went up against the Division II Champions, Mill River. Not until the second half of the last inning did the Gales release their grip on the championship and lose by a 5-4 margin. It was an exciting season for the team s seven seniors. Wendy Bettis, pitcher; Lynn Kenison, center field; Colleen O'Donnell, catcher and 2nd base; Jenny Severance, left field; Jen Stebbins, 2nd base and right field; Jodi Stebbins, 3rd base; and Jen Traux, shortstop all contributed to the team's success. Moment Of Glory Tennis took on a new look this spring. With the support of Athletic Director Bob Taylor, uniforms were purchased for the first time. Everyone looked great in the school colors, and they played inspired tennis. The Girls' Team was one of Hartford's best in terms of depth of talent. The team was young with few seniors holding top positions. Lisa Chabot played number 5 singles; Megan Hunt put away shots at the net in number 2 doubles; and Beth Flanagan, a first year competitor, played number 3 doubles. Jennifer Devins and exchange student Sylvia Christiansen were successful on the second team. The Boys' Team was small and lacked experience at the bottom of the ladder. Seniors filled most of the top positions and will be missed next year. Chuck Detore played number 2 singles, Andy Ci-mis struggled at number 3 singles, and Darrell Herrick was the most successful player at number 4 singles. Tom Baird, a first year competitor, played number 5 singles; while exchange student, Thierry LeClerq, learned the finer points of the game as the season progressed. Although the season was disappointing in terms of overall team success, everyone was able to experience their own Moment of Glory which follows a victory in a hard fought match. Each team member should take pride in his or her personal accomplishments this season. SPECIAL EVENTS Homecoming Despite the rain and a disappointing loss of 16-0 to Bellows Falls, the spirits of those involved in Homecoming '85 remained high. It all started when classrooms quickly emptied at one o'clock on Friday, October 4th: students were being released to help build the bonfire. That evening, cheerleaders, skits, and a rowdy pie-eating contest served as entertainment at the Pep Rally. The high point, of course, came with the lighting of the bonfire. Laundry hanging out to dry, bundles of hay stacked in the corners, and even an outhouse greeted L'il Abner audiences as they entered the High School auditorium on the evenings of May 14th, 15th and 17th. The fun continued as the curtain rose and the goings-on of Abner, Daisy Mae, and Mammy and Pappy Yokum began. Junior Sean Beebe, as the naive and less-than-romantically inclined L'il Abner, took us from the local fishin' hole to a Government Laboratory in Washington, D.C. and back to the open arms of Daisy Mae. Sweet but Spring Musical determined Daisy Mae, played by senior Chaun Janisse, chased this man of her dreams throughout the play only to lose him to Miss Ap-passionata von Climax (her name says it all!) in the annual Sadie Hawkins Day race. Scene stealing awards go to Stu-pifying Jones (Irene Crowe), Evil-Eye Fleagle (Lenny Gabourel) and, of course, those six muscle-bound husbands who flexed their way into upstaging all others. Musical highlights included the foot-stompin' Jubilation T. Corn-pone, and the exceptionally well performed Put 'Em Back. Sean and Chaun shared the stage during such tender numbers as Namely You and Love In a Home. Mr. Gattie's hard work, long hours, and overall dedication has once again resulted in a valuable learning experience for all those involved and a sensational Spring Musical Production for the rest of us. Student Council organized this tropical extravaganza that was hailed a big success by all. Gabe s Mobile Music rocked the gymnasi- um while students and staff ate, drank and merrily mingled. Among the top crowd pleasers was the Junior Class' dunking booth which lured many a soul into either taking a chance or taking a dip. Other attractions included the pie throwing event, the Yearbook photo sale, and the volleyball game. Nearly everyone, including teachers, rallied to the occasion and strutted their finest tropical threads: many wore the plastic leis and real grass skirts sold by the Yearbook staff.
