2 3 5 7 13 MR. HOWARD “BUTCH” LOVERING To our inspirational “Big L”, who through his devotion, love, and unselfishness has given something to us all to cherish, we dedicate our 1985 yearbook. Mr. Howard “Butch Lovering has been a dedicated teacher and a player's coach. His philosophy on life, interest in creating fun and rewarding experiences, and his “Big L charisma have given us a pride to excel. Since coming to Hartford in 1977, Mr. Lovering has been an excellent teacher in the English department, and has rewarded the sports porgram by coaching baseball, football and hockey at all levels of competition. In all areas, he has been the gourmet coach and teacher. Thanks from all who have shared you. You are a special person. Peoples March 19, 1966 - Sept. 14, 1982 Although Steve was restricted to a wheelchair for part of his life, he managed to live life to the fullest. Steve had many hobbies which kept him busy. He enjoyed stamp collecting, crocketing, in which he went to the state finals in, and like any teenage boy, watching girls. Steve served his community by being a boy scout. He was a star scout with Troop 235 in Hartland, VT. Although Steve could not participate physically in sports, he still enjoyed them. Steve earned his letter by managing the boy’s basketball and baseball teams in Hartland Elementary School. Every Labor Day, Steve and his mother and brothers held a yard sale at their home for Muscular Dystrophy, a ritual that Steve's mother still carries on in his memory. Living in a small town such as North Hartland enabled Steve to drive his electric wheelchair up and down the street. Steve enjoyed this activity because the electric wheelchair gave him a feeling of independence. Steve was a friendly, kind, teenage boy, who will remain forever in the memories of those who knew him. Chester Albert Burnham January 17, 1967 - July 11, 1982 Chester was an energetic individual. He was always happy-go-lucky and very easy to get along with. He was very talented. He enjoyed artistic activities such as painting. He was also active. His hobbies were snow-mobiling, fishing and, biking. He also enjoyed nature and loved animals. Chester's favorite activity was helping others. He will forever be in the memories of people who knew him. 35 1984 JUNIOR PROM: FANTASY The 1984 Junior Prom was a night to remember for the class of 1985! The prom was an overall success. with the theme being “Fantasy. The night was especially memorable for Candi Percy, who was voted Prom Queen by the guest band, “Glass Mountain.” Others who joined Candi and her date on the court, were Justine Colby, and her date Jon Hall, Jennifer Knight and her date Lenny Johnson, Monique Cusson and her date Gregg Fogg, and Sally Hutchins and her date Jeff Carbee. The class of '85 would like to thank Mr. Lihatch, Mrs. Moore, Luna Ricker, and the rest of the student body for all their help in making the prom successful. 36 Heather Britnell David Cheney Jeff Carbee Lisa Cardente Brenda Clukey Justine Colby 38 Susan Coutermarsh Hope Cowles Kelly Cummings Monique Cusson Deborah Fraser Kathryn Davis Kelly Farland Susan Frazer Kris Devins Jean Conover 39 Clayton Geno Erik Geno Kathy Gilbert Tony Grondin Caron Heselton Dan Hillard Sally Hutchins Alan Izzo Andy Jones Joe Jones Shari Jacobs Robert Judd 40 John Kangas Heidi Sarah Kenison Janelle Kielly Robyn Lamphere Kristen Lovering Judeen Me Kenney Brian Mack Greg Mairs Martha Martin April McCoy 41 Dorothy Mossey Erik Nelson Calvin Murphy 42 David Reny Beth Richer Denise Rivard William Romano Darcy Rouillard Chrisondra Saunders ■v Tracy Severence Virginia Smith Terri Smith Beckie Snaith Scott Snaith Marie Swasey 43 Seth Tyler LATE ARRIVALS Frank Kenison Scott Rogers Robert Martin ;l ' j EEEEEEEESC Jennifer Knight Dottie Cowdrey NICEST SMILE-Tim LaBounty 4- Heather Britnell CLASS PARTIERS-John Kangas 4 Justine Colby FRIENDLIEST-Kelly Farland 4 Heather Britnell SENIOR SUPERLATIVES MOST LIKELY TO BE LATE-Scott Rodgers 4 Rebecca Genovese MUTT 4 JEFF-John Kangas 4 Lenny Johnson BEST DRESSED-Kelly Farland 4 Jennifer Knight CLASS HALLWALKERS-Mark Peters 4 Sue Frazer MOSTLIKE BROTHER 4 SISTER-David Hammond 4 Darcy Rouillard 45 MORE SENIOR SUPERS! Patty Eck The 1984 season was highlighted by the Connecticut Valley Conference championships hosted by Hartford, but more important the women's team was the only Hartford fall sports team to go undefeated. The men’s team had an 8 wins 7 losses record. The men’s team showed great team spirit, finishing the season off with a 9th place finish in Division II state competition. Senior Dan Talbot set a course record at Fall Mountain and junior Drew Steadman finished tenth at CVC’s. Other top performances were Andy Jones, Jeff Carbee, Joe Jones, and Jim Colby. On the women’s side, they showed that they were still highly regarded as one of the top teams in the CVC league. They picked up a 3rd at CVC’s and a 10th at states. Senior Sally Hutchins continued to be the Gales top runner, placing 10th at CVC’s. She also qualified for the Meet of Champions along with Dan Talbot, Drew Steadman, and Karen Sample. Other top runners for the Gales were Karen Sample, Maureen Donahue, Heidi Kenison, and Ellen Smith. MEN WOMEN Thetford 1st 1st Newport Thetford 2nd 1st Fall Mtn. Most of the team’s games were low scoring contests, with the Gales losing by only one or two goals. This made the season even more frustrating. The team is losing nine seniors, and the underclassmen girls are looking to a season of rebuilding their team. This season was the last for Mrs. Karlson, who left teaching to pursue graduate studies, so the girls will have a new coach next year also. 81 83 FOOTBALL ROW ONE: Kelly Farland. Eric Geno. The Varsity football team ended its season with a 4-5 record. However, the season did end with a big overtime victory over Windsor. It was the first victory over Windsor in five years. Coach Potter, satisfied with the victory over Hartford’s biggest rival, called it quits after seven years. He felt it was a good time to get out without hurting the program. Three Hartford players, Dave Reny, Dave Hammond, and Jerry Lepisko all were picked as player of the week by the valley News at different times in the season. 84 85 SOCCER ROW 1: Jeff Rector. Phot, Yout, Coach Scott Mullen The Hartford Hurricanes soccer team finished the season with a 3-11 record. This was a very tough season for the Canes. The CVL was a tough league this year. The captains of this year's team were Matt Conger and Anthony Grondin. The team's leading scorer was David Cheney. Although the Canes lost 80% of their games, Mark Peter was outstanding in goal and kept most of the games close. At the soccer banquet awards were given to Mark Peters for Best Defensive Player. Matt Conger and Chris Trembley received The Coaches Awards, and Mitch Fogg and Jack Chase were given awards for the most improved players. 87 88 89 BOTTOM ROW: Noel Guarino. However, costly injuries to two starters in the beginning of the season set the Canes back. Defense and a lot of running dictated the outcome of many games for the Canes. To be successful the team had to play good defense and push the ball up the floor constantly. When the Canes couldn’t do these two things the result was usually a loss. Hartford did reach the playoffs, coming in the number five seed in the state. Hartford's first opponent was Essex at home. The Canes never really got into their game and ended up losing in the first round. The team ended up with a 14-7 record for the season. 90 BACK ROW Coach Stone. Rob Hebert. Mike Gaudette. HOCKEY TEAM WINS STATE CHAMPIONSHIP! The hockey team posted a perfect season and added a state championship by beating Mt. St. Joseph’s (Rutland) 4-3 in the finals. The solid first line of Dan Hillard, Greg Fogg and Mike Lovering powered the Canes all season, but it took a fine team effort, including consistent goaltending from Jamey Steinmetz and Mike Bebeau, to push the Canes over the top. The victory was particularly sweet for Coach Lovering. His teams had never beaten MSJ in the playoffs. The season gave the team alot to be proud of and boosted the spirits of Hartford High. 97 ALPINE SKIING If 1 ■ - 4 i Mary Bu- dam T 11 t [ii v i 99 X-COUNTRY SKIING ROW 1: Maureen Donahue. LEAGUE TITLE! The Varsity Baseball Team finished out the year with its finest record in a decade. The final in-season record of 11 wins and 5 losses was good enough to win the Southern Vermont LEAGUE TITLE. This was the first such title in the school’s history. Behind the superb pitching of undefeated Tim Labounty (10-0) and gutsy Ed Therrien, the Hurricanes were able to enter state title competition. They were beaten by South Burlington 6-5 in a heartbreaker during the quarterfinal game. Although the Hurricanes have 9 returning lettermen next year, we will certainly miss those dedicated seniors who contributed to the team's success. They are Jon Hall -catcher, Tim Labounty - pitcher, Randy Torrey - first base, Gregg Fogg - second base, Davy Reny - shortstop, Calvin “Smacky” Murphy - leftfield, Dan Hillard -centerfield, Brian Mack - rightfield. School records were set by Jennifer Adams, a sophomore, in the 300 hurdles. Her time of 51:2 broke the old school record by over five seconds and gave her a sixth place at states. Other records were set by the 2 mile relay team of Dan Talbot, Jeff Carbee, Seth Tyler, and David Marcotte. Their time of 9:23 set the new standard by five seconds as well. Personal bests were achieved by Seniors: Dan Talbot in the mile, 4:40, and the 2 mile, 10:32: Joe Jones in the javelin, 127'; Seth Tyler in the 800, 2:14; and Maureen Donahue in the 400, 68.1. Personal bests by underclassmen: Matt Jarvis in the 100, 11.7; Patty Eck in the 800, 3:13; Stacey Fisher in the mile, 6:02; Bob Rule in the javelin, 125’; Keith Friend in the discus, 92’; Zara Hermanne in the 400, 56.4; and Bob Haehnel in the pole vault. 7’6”.
