Hf©@ KIY HARTFORD HIGH SCHOOL WHITE RIVER JCT., VT. If I leave here tomorrow . . 2 3 . . would you still remember me 'cause I'm as free as a bird now . . 4 . . . and this bird you cannot change s DEDICATION We, the class of 1983, dedicate this yearbook to Mr. Robert Taylor. He is a fine math teacher and has also been athletic director at Hartford for many years. His job as athletic director is often overlooked but the presence of his work is part of every athletic event that takes place at Hartford High School. Being associated with Mr. Taylor for the past four years has been a pleasure for our class. It is good because we have made it this far through all of our years in school, and there is only one more year to go. And yet it is trying because we are so close to being out on our own, but not as close as we wish. We have a feeling of anticipation and restlessness. As a junior, responsibility and judgement in our own lives becomes very real. We have to begin to make important choices and decisions. Making the right decisions is a challenge that we can not avoid. A sophomore is no longer a peon, but he is still considered inferior in the eyes of the upperclassmen. A sophomore has the respect of the freshmen, but he still must look up to the juniors and seniors. A student's second year of high school is one in which he tries to decide what to include in the rest of his high school experience. A transition is taking place in his life. He is excited because he has just completed Ir. High, and he is now ready to make the big jump to high school. He feels grown up and mature until he actually begins school and finds out that he is not the oldest anymore and that many of the upperclassmen will look down on him. Nervousness sets in the night before school starts; he is going to a different school, with many thoughts of work being much harder and teachers giving more homework. The thoughts of initiation leave him paranoid through most of the year. But one's Freshman year can also be one of the most fun years in high school, as a person doesn't have the worries of post graduation plans, like Juniors and Seniors. The men's team finished their regular season with a 7-5 record while the women finished with the best season of any Hartford cross country team in the history of the school at 12-0. The men's team had lots of spirit. They were very consistent and ran to their potential. They proved to be very competitive in a respectful manner against the better schools in the area. Senior Dave Carbee ran many outstanding races and was the individual winner of five races. Other top runners included Jay Robertson, Tom Smith, and Robert Hundhausen. The women's team won the Connecticut Valley Championships, holding off threats from Springfield and Bellows Falls. They finished fifth in the Vermont State Meet to qualify for the New Englands for the first time. The team was led by the outstanding running of sophomore Sally Hutchins, who won the CVC's and her division in the State Meet. Other top runners included senior captain Brenda Beidler and junior Janice Adams. 9 FIELD HOCKEY Row 1: Monique Cusson. Karen Ballou, Kathy Davis, Stacy Hoose, Diana Clay. Toward the middle and end of the season the Gales met up with some pretty tough competition and ended their C.V.L. season with a satisfying record of 6-4-3. However, the season was not yet over for the Gales, for their record qualified them for the Vermont Headmasters tournament. Here the Gales were successful in the playoffs, upsetting Wilmington 1-0 in overtime. Traveling to Middlebury in the quarterfinals, the Gales played an exciting game but lost to Middlebury 3-0. The Gales were coached by Kathy Karlson, who has led the field hockey program at Hartford for sixteen years. She has now requested a sabbatical leave for next year to pursue advanced graduate study. We wish her the best of luck. There were eight underclassmen and ten seniors who contributed greatly to the Gales' success. The seniors have concluded their field hockey career at Hartford, but leave a slogan for the Gales to follow, remember, and carry on. Being proud and standing tall, all for one and one for all. 93 FOOTBALL The 1982-83 season was a success for the football team. After two previous losing seasons, this year s team ended with a winning record. A record of 5 wins and 4 losses enabled the team to place third in the Connecticut Valley League. A senior oriented team, Hartford was well established for its size and strength. The team was led by co-captains Matt Potter and Alister Cate. After a slow start the team put on a late season winning streak. This streak gave the team a bid for a least a piece of the CVL title, but a disappointing loss, in the last game erased a chance for the CVL title, leaving Hartford in third place. Two of the biggest highlights of the year were beating Hanover, 13-12, and beating Lebanon at Homecoming. 94 'i - Row 1: Victor Newcity. Dan Philbin, H.S. Pollard, Jim Zeke Young. Hartford's young team, made up of mostly the sophomore class, was led by senior Brett Steadman and junior Pat Smith. The young team had a fairly good year. The Canes started the season with a 3-1 record, but towards the middle of the season the team hit a slump. Hartford got out of that slump by beating Woodstock 1-0 and making themselves eligible for the playoffs. In the first round of the playoffs, the Canes fought a hard battle before losing 3-0 to Colchester. The team is definitely looking forward to next year. Row 1 lay O'Neil. Ron Johnson. Randy Torrey. After going 0-20 the year before, the 1982-83 varsity basketball team made a great turnaround by going 11 -9 and making the playoffs. The first few games went well for the Canes with two victories over Lebanon and victory over Stevens. Then things started to slump as the Canes had a 5-8 record after 13 games. Then a five game winning streak sparked by center Bob Cimis enabled the Canes to finish with an 11 -9 regular season record before losing to Montpelier in the first round of the playoffs, (by one point.) Highlights of the year were the upsets over Mt. Anthony and Brattleboro and beating the Rutland Raiders on their home court. 98 99 GIRLS BASKETBALL The 1982-83 girls varsity basketball team ended their season by losing a close tournament game against North Country by two points. The Gales had a very good year with a record of 11-9 overall. The highlight of the season was beating their cross river rival Lebanon by one point at Lebanon. Coached by Marty Brown the past two seasons, the girls have displayed skill and talent other coaches did not think they had. The Gales looked very much as a team this season. Losing seven seniors to graduation next year will mean somewhat of a rebuilding season for the Gales. Seniors Diana Clay, Michele Courtemanche, and Denise Peters were elected by their peers to assume the role of tri-captains. The three showed great leadership and helped the team out overall. Senior Meredith Jones was named to the All League First team while Diana Clay was named to the Second team. (Together Each Accomplishes More.) Our team had everyone'' involved in its success. The players enjoyed a season of fourteen wins and eight losses. It was to be a building season with only four seniors returning from a state finalist a year ago. Those four seniors decided it was their season and they were going to make it a winning one. Matt Potter proved his defensive prowess while loe Richer provided the netminding thrills. Brett Steadman had an outstanding year offensively with the culmination of scoring over 100 goals during his career. Scott Brock played at both the defense and the forward positions. His versatility was appreciated by his coaches and teammates. The team played two games in the Vermont State Tournament. The quarterfinal game pitted Hartford against an inspired Middlebury team. Hartford won easily. Our next stop was Gutter-son Field House in Burlington. This game was considered by a large throng of knowledgeable hockey fans as the “real state final. Hartford held the state champion scoreless in the first period. The second period found the future champs down two to one. However, great expectations were thwarted when Rutland exploded for six goals. This ended a season of excitement and super team play. At the banquet, special awards were presented to loe Richer, Matt Potter, Brett Steadman, Dan Flanagan, Tim Langlois, and John Halpin. Varsity letters were awarded to Jeff Truax, Jeff Terino, Scott Snaith, Dan Hillard, Alex DeFelice, and Greg Fogg. The captain elected for next year is Derek Pierce. The alternate captains are Tom Smith and John Halpin. The season can only be summed up as an enjoyable experience of what team is. Row 1: Andy Metherall, Scott Brock. The 82-83 cheerleaders set out to prove them wrong. Coaches Thurston, Cheney, and Farland have helped the girls with their spirit and abilities. Marie Thurston has coached for two years with basketball and football cheerleaders. Mr. Cheney joined us again for his eighth year of Hockey coaching. Mrs. Farland coached for the first time here this year, and we hope to have her help again next year. The cheerleaders had a pep rally this year before the Homecoming game. The rally was held outside at night and was followed by a dance in the B.O.R. building. The following girls participated in cheerleading this year: Justine Colby, Marie DeLorme, Beth Dyer, Beth Flanagan, Valarie Hunt, Chauntell Janisse, Meredith Jones, Lynn Kendall, Kristen Lovering, Lisa Manning, Denise Rivard, Mary Rockwell, Leslie Rogers, Kim Soule, Roxanne Trombley, Diana Truell, Faith Wills.
