In its« ition of the Mart regular seftlon and v e seeded ninth in the Class L baseball play-d ppemn ' ■iiii i. ¥ plav-dayn , Hartford dfe defeated MSJ 6-3 with Jim Kenkon pitching a 4-hit ball game and George Ostler's home run leading the hitting attack. Hartford’s next opponent was undefeated Essex Junction, with the game being played at Essex. As underdogs, the team pulled the biggest set of the year winning 5-4. Outstanding ir h game waflthe fine pitching of Dale Follensbee with relief help from Jim W A Kenison. The entire team played outstanding defensive ball. At this point, tile sports wi iters had dubbed the Hurricane e as the Cinderella team of the State play offs. Hartford’s next opponent was the strong Mount Anthony team from Bennington, winning this game 3-0 behind the 2-hit pitching of Kenison, with John Dyer getting the key hit driving in 2 of the 3 runs. The State Championship game against South Burlington saw Hartford win its first Class L Championship since 1927 with a score of 5-1. Behind the 6-hit pitching of Kenison and errorless ball by the team and timely hits by John Dyer and Jack Briggs, Hartford walked off as State Championship much to the delight of the large crowd at the Windsor field. Coach Ken Dyer and his assistant. Bob Potter, stressed the tremendous attitude and unselfish play of this group to make the season the success it was! % Hartford High Baseball Team Wins Qtafe Championship I Softball Top Row: Mu Flanagan, C. Just 5 minutes away from picking up all the marbles. Leading 12 to 0 at the half over an undefeated Essex Junction team — the first 5 minutes, at the start of the second half, did the damage to our team as Essex scored twice and converted both times, to win the Championship 1 4 to 12. We scored once more in the 4th period but it went for naught as our runner was ruled to have stepped out before going into the end zone. Our boys turned in a fine season as they won 7 and lost 2 — some of the highlights of the season were: 1 — Second straight Southern Vermont Championship. 2 — Twelve straight wins Versus Vermont opponents. 3 — Outstanding victories against Division I teams — 28 Bellows Falls 26-8 and Mt. St. Joseph's 18-12. 4 — Big wins over old rivals Lebanon 39 0, Windsor 20-7, and Woodstock 12-8. 5 — Great opening win over Poultney 30-8, Poultney went on to win all their other games. 6 — Placed 3 of our players on the Vermont Shrine Team — John Aher, Jim Kenison, and Jon Potter. 7 — Achieved the 50th win for Coach McCanna when we defeated Fair Haven 32-6 — then went on to register 3 more wins to bring it to 53 wins, 39 losses, and 3 ties for Coach McCanna’s tenure here at his old Alma Mater. We lose a lot of outstanding players thru graduation and the following players will be hard to replace — John Aher, Bill Clerkin, Tim Smith, Danny Hardy, Steve Bomhower, Jon Potter, Jim Kenison, Bruce Oronte, Dennis Parra, Ernie Gour, Bob Durkee, Danny Perkins, Robert Powden, and Jim Brooks. In the fall of 1973 the first official Hartford Cross Country team participated in the Southern Vermont League. The intention of the program was to have a boys team and a girls team. The boys survived and competed in eight meets. The girls dwindled to below team size but hopefully will compete in 1974-75. The cross-country team was coached by Mr. David Jordan, English teacher at the high school. The team boasted of thirteen men who finished the season. The 73-74 season was particularly important as a year for gaining experience for future growth. Three seniors competed for Hartford and ten underclassmen. The Hartford Team competed in the league meets with teams of several years' experience, but the Hartford men were able to stay off the bottom rung at the season's close. High points of the season were preparing a home course, hosting a home meet, and competing in two close dual meets with the Hanover High team. The Robert Ammel family graciously allowed the team to use its land, and a course was laid out by Mike Ammel, senior member of the team. The course was immediately dubbed the most scenic in the league with such land marks as Cowslip Lane and an old stone wall along the way. The first home meet for Hartford was successful. Interesting highlights were seeing 70 runners converge on a 20 foot opening at the same time and a fantastic winning time (it was a short course). The meets with Hanover were both decided by only two points. Each team managed to win on the opponent's course and good rivalry with Hanover has started. 38 Drama 39 40 Top: Pete Sheret, David Cavanaugh, Robert St. James, and Kelvin Porker. Hartford hockey team this year had a most successful season after starting on shaky footing with only two wins in the first nine games. Things reversed themselves in the last half of the season with the Canes winning 5 of the next 6 games to earn, for the first time ever, a position in the Vermont hockey playoffs. Finding out that they had been picked for the playoffs gave them the life that they needed. With only a couple of practices behind them, they went after Essex. Out of all the teams they played this year, Essex was the one they really wanted to beat. They showed their determination by playing one of the best games of the year, defeating Essex 3-2, in the quarter finals. With a few more practices, they got ready for Lyndon. Going into the second game of the playoffs, with great expectations, Hartford blew Lyndon off the ice in the first period, scoring 5 unanswered goals. Lyndon gave Hartford quite a scare with their comeback of 4 unanswered goals. Just when it looked like it would be the end for Hartford, they scored the winning goal! Hartford then had to face Winooski in the final game and even though it was a game well played, Winooski played better and defeated them. A team that half way through the season had a 2 win — 7 loss record really came a long way, ending runner up for the Division II title. 49 For Right: Chris luce. Below: Vonce Dean. To many people, our team's record of 1 -19 only demonstrates another rough season of basketball. The scoreboard observers have written the season off as a failure. But to many dedicated Hurricane players and fans, this is far from true. Our Southern Vermont League was extremely tough, our team inexperienced and we had a new coach and system to adjust to. Losing a couple of one point games and losing thirteen games by less than fourteen points shows that a break here and there would have changed the record a lot. It is a proud thing for a coach to see his players give all that they can and never give up until the end, always working as a team. This was our season's success. Our victory over Springfield was the obvious highlight for the year but there were also the two good games against the New England finalists, Mt. Anthony. Again, we played well against a fine Hanover at Hanover and had a 53 point second half outburst, just falling short of victory, over Bellows Falls. The final game of the year against Windsor was a fine way to end the season with knowledge that next year our prospects are much better with several returning veterans. 55 Hartford Hanover 73 68 Hartford Lebanon 70 66 Hartford Windsor 90 61 Hartford Springfield 75 89 Hartford Springfield 90 51 Hartford Bellows Falls 82 62 Hartford Rutland 75 68 Hartford Mt. Girls Baskeiball The 1973-74 Girls Basketball season was a success in that the varsity compiled a record of 10 wins and 4 losses, and reaching the quarterfinals in the state tournament. Of these 10 wins, some were against larger schools such as Springfield and Brattleboro. The highlight of the season came in the second Brattleboro game, as a complete team effort came forth to avenge an earlier loss. Other wins came on strong individual efforts. Carol DeCoff led the offense with an average of 14.6 points per game. Tawny Blanchard was second in scoring with a 9.1 average, as well as being an outstanding playmaker. The defense was led by Sheila Bowley, with her numerous blocked shots and an average of 7.8 rebounds per game. Cathy Morancy added to both offense and defense coming up with a 7.4 average in both rebounds and points. Looking forward to next year, we will have a host of Juniors and Sophomores returning, losing only 3 Seniors, Carol DeCoff, Tawny Blanchard, and Val Powers. Also with a vastly improved J.V. squad, the competition for the varsity will be intense. The J.V.’s won 4 games, led by Sue Culver, Shelly Bowley, and Theresa Bellavance. We are hoping for another enjoyable season with success through a total team effort. 57 Hartford Windsor 29 48 Hartford Springfield 26 42 Hartford Springfield 39 42 Hartford Brattleboro 30 38 Hartford Brattleboro 40 37 Hartford Bellows Falls 71 52 Hartford Hanover 33 21 Hartford Bellows Falls 80 55 Hartford Woodstock 29 43 Hartford Green Mountain 25 45 Hartford Windsor 27 44 Hartford MSJ (Rutland) 25 54 Hartford Woodstock 31 35 Hartford Milton 41 68 71 Boy's Track Top Row: T. Despite very poor weather conditions hampering practice, and necessitating the cancellation of our first meet with Windsor, steady progress was made by most of the boys. Several fine performances were turned in and a new school record was set by Steve DeFelice in the javelin throw. Steve tossed the spear 174'10 breaking a longstanding record of 172' set by Ernie Reeves back in 1952. A new field record was set by Tim Smith with a 12'6 vault in the pole vault. Robert Powden set a new school record of 39' in the triple jump. Other performances worthy of mentioning were those of Jon Potter in the discus with a season best of 1 34'. Asa Hazen, a freshman, ran a 1 1:05 two mile — Michael Colgan, a 55.6 440 yd., and 2:10 880 yd. run, and David Laurin took fifth place in the So. District meet with a 4:45.6 mile. Several freshmen — Asa Hazen, Phil Adams, Mark Greene, Jeff White, Dino Sawyer, Terri Reynolds — worked hard and showed much promise for the future. Jeff Bishop showed steady progress in the shot put. Charlie Bomhower in the low hurdles. Chip Jameson and Kelvin Parker came thru with some valuable points in several of our meets. Kevin Smith, a junior, gave indication that he will be hard to beat in the high jump next year. Henry Hazen, troubled with a bad knee for most of the season should be Hartford s number one 880 man next season. Robin Ellison and Adolph Lupie, both two milers and dedicated workers, are sure to score high for Hartford next Spring. The girls did so well as a team and as individuals against their opponents. Track is an individual sport made up of individuals who run individual distances and who set individual goals. To speak of team results would take away acknowledgement from each individual on the team. Because of the small size of the team, all girls had to help each other in practice and at meets. In this capacity, the team was again, successful. Each girl on the team had great potential and all of the girls who put forth their entire effort saw the beneficial results they deserved to see. 76 Left: Gndy Perroult Above: Towny Blanchard Right: Donna Williamson Below Left: (Hartford) Janke Gosselin and Theresa Goarino Below Right: Marilyn Ammel 77 Baseball Top Row: J. HARTFORD HIGH SCHOOL VARSITY BASEBALL SEASON, 1974 Hartford High School s Baseball Team, Class L Champions of the state in 1973, completed another successful season winning ten and losing six games during the 1974 campaign. Hartford, playing in two of the toughest leagues in New Hampshire and Vermont, the Connecticut Valley League and the Southern Vermont League, wound up in second place in the Southern Vermont, and tied for third place in the Connecticut Valley League. Aj a result of their overall record, Hartford was selected to play in the Vermont State Playoffs. Hartford's first play down opponent was highly regarded Essex Junction. In a tight thriller Hartford defeated Essex two to one, with Jim Kenison throwing a two hitter and Phil Spillane driving in the winning run. Thus, for the second year in a row, Hartford knocked Essex from tourney play. Hartford's next opponent, Spaulding High of Barre, seeded number one in the state, defeated Hartford at Barre seven to one, thus bringing to a close Hartford's bid for a second straight Championship. The season s finale saw the following outstanding Seniors putting on the Blue and White uniform for the last time: Captains Dan Hardy and John Aher, both outstanding four year veterans under Coach Dyer, and Captain Jim Kenison, who wound up two years of outstanding baseball with a ten win-five loss record on the mound as well as playing a fine shortstop will be missed. Other real losses by graduation are veteran catcher Ernie Gour whose catching and throwing was respected throughout Vermont baseball circles. Bob Dyer, a hard luck ball player who sat out his Junior year with a fractured jaw and whose play was limited in ,,74,‘ by a shoulder injury 78 suffered during the basketball season, thus limiting his playing to two games in two years. Dale Follensbee will also be lost by graduation and while Dale may have been overshadowed at times by Kenison, his efforts on the mound were tremendous and he made a real contribution to the team's success in the past two years. Other Seniors who made real contributions to the team and will be difficult to replace are reserve outfielder Gary Evans, Pitcher Charlie Reed, and first year outfielder Tom Thibodeau. Hartford will be hard pressed to replace these nine seniors. Bob Potter is to be commended for the excellent coaching and cooperation he has given in his role as Assistant Coach. His contributions and dedication were a vital factor in the team's success. Finally the fine job done by Coach Remick and his assistant coach. Gay Reed in grooming the Junior Varsity for future action on the Varsity level is to be commended. For Coach Dyer this season saw the culmination of twenty years as Varsity Coach of Baseball at Hartford, with one year out due to illness. In that span of time his teams have had thirteen winning seasons and six seasons under the five hundred mark, a record he is justifiably proud. J. V. Baseball Top Row: D. Burnham, J. Pippin, D.
