Our final year at Hartford has been enjoyable as well as rewarding. We have had some bad times here, but they are minute compared to the good times we have shared. Now we look to the outside to dream, to hope, and to achieve our ambitions. Many of us will leave Hartford, our homes, and friends to find some purpose in life, maybe to return. It has been an honor serving as Senior Class President. We won't be sad to say good-bye, just happy we had the chance to say hello. Despite a late start and a loss to Rutland High School in its first outing, the team showed improvement with each succeeding week. In the Southern Vermont Cross Country’ Conference, Hartford moved up from a fourth place in the initial meet of the conference to a first place in the final championship meet in Brattleboro. This first place earned Hartford a share in the championship with Rutland. In the State Championship meet, held in Brattleboro, Hartford finished sixth in a field of seventeen teams. The top runner for Hartford in this meet was Michael Antonio, who took a fifth place which earned him the right to participate in the New England Cross Country Meet held at the University of New Hampshire. Other runners who finished high in the scoring for Hartford were Dale Hackett, Chris Taylor, Fred Kirsteatter, and Wilfred Yellowman. The success of the team can be attributed to the dedicated effort of all the members of the team who ran many miles over the hills and valleys of the Hanover Golf Course. The coaching staff and Hartford's fans faced it with understandable apprehension. Yet, right from the first game with a fine 24-8 win over Woodstock everyone could see there were unexpected ingredients in this team that would lead to victory. Their spirit and pride was great, plus - the team was in excellent condition and no one was seriously hurt or missed a single game because of injuries. The team's goal was taking the Southern Division II title, and with this in mind they entered the West Rutland game, and again were victorious 30-6. The team next suffered a hard fought defeat at the hands of Bellows Falls, the best team in Vermont, by a score of 20-0. The 20-8 victory over Fair Haven reinforced hopes for the division II title, and the team was really fired-up for the Poultney game. Unfortunately, the bad breaks that plagued them throughout the season proved to be the undoing of this game, a 14-0 defeat. The next game was against undefeated arch-rival Lebanon. Spirits and hopes were high, but again those breaks were a factor and Hartford took another 14-0 defeat. Everything was riding on the final game with Windsor - the winner of this game would represent Southern Division 11, in the State Championship game, and the outcome would mean a winning or losing leason for the Hurricanes. Rich Wright made two brilliant interceptions, but the team still lost 41-22. The team played well to the end though, and finished the season with pride. Illness kept star tackle Paul Marsh out of the final game, and he certainly was missed Three team members - Rich Wright, Jim Thompson, and Paul Marsh were named to the all-state football squad, and Thompson was the Upper Valley's leading rusher. The 3-4 record was disappointing, but as Coach McCanna put it at the awards banquet Years from now when someone looks at that record and discounts it as a bad season, what he won't realize will be how much spirit and courage this team had. They were the most courageous boys I've ever coached. They were mostly young and inexperienced, but played hard and they played to win. Time will pass on though and eight more seniors will graduate this year. They are co-captains Rich Wright ( 63) and Jim Thompson ( 31), Paul Marsn ( 72), Bob Blanchard ( 74), Darcy Rogers ( 71), Leonard Gilmore ( 85), Don DeGrasse ( 76), and head manager Harold Wright. 73 75 76 Field Hockey FIRST ROW; S. The Varsity field hockey team had a fantastic season this year finishing with an outstanding 14-1-1 record. The team completed its regular season schedule undefeated with a record of 11-0-1. They were then chosen as one of sixteen teams to compete in the Vermont State Field Hockey Tournament. The girls were very excited and played their very best through out the three week long competition. Losing to Miadlebury in the finals was a big disappointment, but the hockey team is very proud to be state runners-up for 1971. The JVS had many inexperiencea players but through their enthusiasm and hard work, they finished the season with a vet)' respectable record of 3-2-4. The team looks forward to camp next summer and to a successful season. FIRST ROW: K. Burnham, D. Wiegand, L. Simon, M. L. Scelza, J. Dow. SECOND ROW; D. Collins, B. Roberts, S. Derrick, G. Kenyon, N. The girls were chosen to compete in the Vermont Headmaster's Tournament. They won their opening game of the play-offs by defeating a tough Lake Regions team 39-35. The girls then lost a heart breaker in the semi-finals, bowing to Mississquoi by a single point, 39-38. The 1972 version of the Hartford Hurricane basketball squad proved to be the surprise team in the Upper Valley this season, as they posted a 9-11 over - all mark after a disappointing 4-16 record last year. Because of their improved play, Hartford earned a state playoff berth, only to be defeated in the first round by C.V.U., 67-58. Hartford finished fifth in the S.V.L., with a 6-8 slate, while compiling a 3-3 record in non-league competition, with three victories over Hanover and two losses to Lebanon, and a lone defeat to White Mountain. The season started with a 64-48 triumph over Hanover, but after six encounters the 'Canes had slipped to 2-4. After that, however, it seemed that Coach Don Wilson had worked the bugs out of the Hurricane attack as they won their next five straight, lifting their record to 7-4. But the 'Canes ran into problems over the last half of the season, winning only two out of nine contests, including three one point heartbreakers. In addition to their playing problems, Hartford lost Senior forward Lee Hathorn with a broken wrist with four crucial games remaining. Hot shooting Senior guard, Wilfred Yellowman, was the leading scorer with an 18.4 points per game average. Second was an another Senior, Rich Wright, who hustled and rustled the backboards for 12.1 ppg. 89 90 91 Ski Team FIRST ROW: George Ostler, J. Flanagan, D. Hackett, P. St. Jacques, S. Ballou, L. You’ve come a long way baby. These are the only words that can describe the Hanford Ski Team. In just a few years the Ski Team has been dragged from the cellar of athletics and moved into the lights as one of the top sports in the school. The Ski Team had more races this year than ever before. How did they do? Not bad! Their first race of the season was at Mt. Ascutney, where they competed against twelve area teams. In this race, Hartford finished sixth, bested only by such ski powers as Bennington, Brattleboro, and a few others. This trend continued throughout the season. Stand outs this year were Sophomores Bill Henne, Norme Poutre, and Greg Edwards. They were the only ones who could really put it together to overcome the veterans who, for some strange reason, didn't have the season that they had hoped for. Cross country aces this year were Dale Hackett, Dale Ballard, and Bill Henne. On the girls' side, there was Ski Team Co-Captain Linda Doug Wiegand, Jennifer Dow, and Pat Foley. The girls participated in the Nastar races, and usually wiped up first, second, and third places. The Ski Team will remain strong next year, as they are only losing three members through graduation; J.B. Flanagan, Steve Perry, and Brian Smith. 95 Softball The 1971 Girls' Softball Team posted a record of 6-4. The girls had a powerful batting attack which produced as'many as 42 runs in a single game. They were also a good defensive squad with a smooth fielding infield of first sacker Donna Gibson, keystone guardian Shonah Jardine, shortstop Pat Perkins, and Betsy Briggs operating at the hot corner. The outfield of Tawny Blanchard in left Carol DeCoff in center, and Shirley Carpenter and Marlene Ballou platooning in right came up with some fielding gems of their own. The pitching staff was also in fine shape with Joan Demmon and Cathie Trottier hurling to the girl in the iron mask, Lorena Guarino. The year was not without its bright spots though as the Hurricanes pulled off upset victories over Windsor and M.A.U. At the conclusion of the season the four senior members of the team; Bob Freitas, Charley Jorgensen, Norm Fountain, and Stu Ricker were elected Quad-captains. Follansbee. Hartford High School runners posted several new school records during the season of 1971. The middle distance duo of Mike Antonio and Dale Hackett was unbeatable in the mile and two mile events respectively. In winning the Southern Vermont mile championship, Mike set a new school record of 4:30. Dale set a new school record in the two mile, of 10:02 at the New England Championship Meet. Chris Taylor posted his best time of the season in the 880, at 2:04, which was close to the school record of 2:02.3. Don Hodgdon was a consistent threat in the 100 and 220 yard dashes and the jumping events. His triple jump distance of 38’ 8 1 2 against Rutland was a new school and field record. A young crop of freshmen pole vaulters led by Mike Ammel shows much promise for the future in that event. Much improvement was made by all members of the squad during the season. The propects for track in 1972 look very bright. Since dark is what brings out your light. Some mystery becomes the proud. But to be wholly taciturn In your reserve is not allowed. Say something to us we can learn By heart and when alone repeat. Say something! And it says, I burn. But say with what degree of heat. Talk Fahrenheit, talk Centigrade. Use language we can comprehend. Tell us what elements you blend. It gives us strangely little aid, But does tell something in the end. And steadfast as Keats' Eremite, Not even stooping from its sphere, It asks a little of us here. It asks of us a certain height. So when at times the mob is swayed To carry praise or blame too far. We may choose something like a star To stay our minds on and be staid.
