If I must leave with a final message . let it be this: Although at times it must seem disappointingly frustrating and virtually impossible there is only one thing to do, and that is just- Ride On. TYLER J. GOULD President’s Message MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE SENIOR CLASS Graduation for the Class of 1971 has finally arrived. In our four years at H.H.S. we have lived through many varied experiences. Some of these we will want to forget. Others we will cherish all of our lives. All of them however, have had a hand in our development and learning and will definitely influence our future. Now we all must leave H.H.S. and assume the responsibilities of the future, which is fast becoming the present for all of us. It is up to us to take and use wisely the abilities we have achieved these past four years. On behalf of the Class of 71, I would like to thank everyone who has provided us with the education we have received in these, perhaps the most important, years of our lives. Also, 1 want to wish all of my classmates and friends happiness and peace of mind for the rest of your lives. JOE GUAR1NO 16 JOEL LAURENCE ADAMS How old are you? Oh, about 25 . . . Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away.” Thoreau TO: Members of the Graduating Class of 1971 Your educational process for the past twelve years is coming to a beginning. The tools of education developed over the past twelve years will need many adjustments, alterations, and retooling. Your real education begi ns in the world of work, understanding human relationships, and the revolutionary changes that are constantly brought about by technology. Conventional wisdom of the 1970's will not serve the needs of the 1980's. In other words, education is always a beginning: never an ending. My best wishes to each of you to find success and happiness. Millard D. Harrison Superintendent of Schools 53 Principal’s Message My Dear Hartford Seniors: Build a castle - build it well Where good thoughts and dreams may dwell Where the problems of the day Can be solved without, delay Where nobility we find In the castle of the mind Youth of today are ordinary and usual in so many ways even though it cannot be overlooked that you are more aware and more concerned and more wrapped-up in what is going on in your world than were the teenagers of most other years. The adult world can learn much from the young people of this generation. Your honesty, your sensitivity, your desire for involvement, to say nothing about your intelligence and knowledge, these are the ingredients which stamp you as potentially capable to handle tomorrow the problems we are having a lot of trouble with today. And the adult world should realize that the youth in which we are putting so much faith and hope are not those who are attracting top-priority newspaper and radio-television coverage. The ordinary ones - the ones who study, who play football, who are in the band, who are electronics bugs - the ones who do the expected thing - you will be ready to do your much bigger thing tomorrow. As you enter a way-out world in a helter - skelter time it is your old - fashioned ordinary - ness that will be your springboard to sound decisions and to your success. It is my hope that you see yourselves as participants in a great nation and have a sense of purpose in relation to it. Sincerely, Dale L. Gary Gove, and also Jay Reed were selected to the Upper Valley most valuable player by the Valley News Staff. Ricker became the first HHS player in history to be chosen as an alternate on the All-America Team. Hartford started off their 1970 season with a tremendous wallop over the Woodstock Wasps with a score of 56-0. Everyone shared the honor of the game and 5 different men scored touchdowns. Next the Hurricanes traveled to West Rutland to play the Golden Horde. Hartford put things all together for a second time by handing the Horde's a 42-0 defeat. Then the Hurricanes met their match against the Terriers from Bellows Falls. They handed Hartford its first defeat of the season with a 20-14 score, losing in the closing minutes. Then the Hurricanes traveled to Fair Haven to greet the tough hard-nosed Slaters. Even in the pouring rain the Hurricane team was unstoppable as they racked up a 38-0 score. The Hurricanes then snipped the tough Blue Devils from Poultney High with a 14-6 score. This was probably the most important game for our boys because they had never once scored a TD against this team. Then along came the Bulldogs, from Burr Burton. Hartford racked up 54 big points to defeat them 54-22. Next was the Annual Rival game between the Hurricanes and the Lebanon Raiders. The Raiders won the game as they nipped the Hartford Blue 19-14, In the game for the Southern District Play-offs Hartford Hurricanes played a real hard game but the pressure was released by the end of the game as Windsor walked away with the 34-6 victory. The nine Seniors leaving the squad are Co-captains Stewart Ricker and Bill Capron; also Gary Gove, Pat Mock, Jay Reed, Enoch Tooyak, Richard Scelza, Jim Oronte, Charlie Jorgenson, and Manager Terry Raymond. Next year's squad will really miss these players because of the great role everyone played in getting them to be Tri-Champs. It is now the sixth year in a row that Coach Gregg McCanna has turned in winning seasons. Coach McCanna says that he has big hopes for next year's team as there are 7 returning lettermen and a good crop of Sophomores who also played very important roles in this year's season. Everyone hopes that next year will be the year for the Hartford High football squad to have their chance at a shot for the Southern Division II Championship. Ring, S. Ricker, P. Mock, J. Reed, E. Wright. R. Stone, J. Spauld-ng, T. Doubleday, R. Wright, L. Hathorn. In coach Don Wilson's inaugural season as head coach the Hurricanes posted a disappointing record of 4-16. The season was not without its bright spots though. After losing their initial game to Hanover, the Hurricanes won their next two games, both against Middlebury, by scores of 64-60 and 70-48. The Hurricanes then had a losing streak, but they didn't give up and when they played Hanover again, the result was a stunning upset, Hartford 58, Hanover 55. The last Hartford victory was a bit unusual to say the least. The Hurricanes were playing Bellows Falls and Hartford held a three-point lead after three periods of play. We controlled the jump to start the final stanza and Dave Ring raced in for an unmolested lay-up. Great except for one thing; instead of putting the ball in the Hartford basket, Dave sunk the ball in the Bellows Falls basket, a wrong-way basket. So instead of Hartford leading by five the Hurricanes were only up by one. Bellows Falls took a one point lead into the final minute of play and the Terriers had the ball. As the last seconds of the game were ticking off the clock. Ring stole the ball and laid it up in the right basket, for the winning points. The whole season might have been a lot better except that for the second year in a row the Hurricanes lost a key player early in the year. In the first game, star forward, Joe Guarino was injured and was forced to sit out the entire season. Joe showed that he had real team spirit though, as he became team manager since he couldn't play. 118 First Row; P. Bouthilier (coach), B. Capron, M. Ammel, M. Bradley, R. Ammel, F. Hayden, T. Twelve senior lettermen having graduated last year, the first few practices looked somewhat weak. As the year progressed, play greatly improved even though the record did not. The moral victory of overcoming the adversities of a losing season helped make up for the dismal 2-10-2 record. Losing only four seniors this year and with the initiation of Peewee Hockey at Hartford turning up many fine prospects, there is a much brighter outlook for the next year! 121 I „ .c I va A Varsity Field Hockey First Row: D. The team wishes to thank Mrs. Karlson and Mis: Hazen. 124 N. Johnson, P. Perkins, S, Carpenter, D. Gibson, M. Ballou, C. Decoff, Mrs. Karlson, MISSING: A. Dean Both basketball teams were very young this year. Yet, they had some very close and exciting games, finishing with a good record. The team will lose two seniors through graduation so already enthusiastic plans are being made for next year. The team coached by Mrs. Karlson with assistance from Miss Hazen, whom they wish to thank whole-heartedly. The ski season began at Hartford this year with some very new and exciting developments. Hartford saw its first cross-country ski team and a full” race schedule. The team competed in a total of nine meets (cross-country and alpine) with some outstanding individual showings. The Ski Team is young, enthusiastic and growing. We anticipate a larger team in the future with high hopes of a good team showing. Our season was marked by those 2:20 dismissals for Snow Crest, rained out meets, sub-zero temperatures, broken skis, bouts with flu, juggling equipment from room to room, and bad waxing days - love that Klister!! 126 We wish to thank Mrs. Hall for her efforts ir- be' alf of the ski team.
