4r Introducing Your 1970 Yearbook THE HARTFORD KEY fhe School Board CARL E. KELTON, Chairman CHARLES S. RISING MAYNARD R. YOUNG HERBERT S. SMITH GEORGE ELLISON MILLARD HARRISON, Superintendent JOHN A. FREITAS, Associate Superintendent Yearbook Of- HARTFORD HIGH SCHOOL White River Junction, Vermont i Foreword ROBERT REYNOLDS _ ROBERTA HATHORN ’ ° dlt0fS RAE RICHARDS - Art Editor ED DOUBLEDAY - Business Mgr. These are the moments we would savor in the afterglow of tomorrow, when faces and events long have ebbed into the shadows of our memory. Contents Theme Seniors Faculty Classes Candid Shots Sports Organizations Junior Prom Activities Reflections 2 Class Mosts Sponsors Superintendent’s Message The decade of the sixties has ended. A nation born of high ideals is now embroiled into conflict between the ideals of democracy and the practice of democracy. The message of the sixties should be vividly clear to each of you. Youth has a vital share and responsibility in working out solutions that exist in our troubled country. Your educational experience at Hartford High School is a significant foundation for you to build upon towards understanding our fellow man and its institutions. Your enthusiasm, honesty, tolerance, and idealism in the 70’s” is a needed thrust. The next decade will be a better decade because of your participation. Best wishes to you and your commitment. 3 Millard Harrison, Superintendent Principal’s Message My Dear Hartford Seniors: The completion of your high school years is actually the beginning of new careers for each of you. The lessons learned in high school will enable you to encounter and surmount new challenges as you enter your chosen fields of endeavor in employment or higher education. The last four years have provided you with fundamental proficiencies and attitudes so vital in your development as young adults in the finest of American tradition. It is my hope that you see yourselves as participants in a great nation and have a sense of purpose in relation to it. For the concerns and the support and the direction which they have rendered you, your teachers merit your appreciation. Treasure what has been given to you so that you will wish to serve those same values which made possible your education and your freedom as an individual. Your accomplishments in school have been praiseworthy. Continue to conduct yourselves in a positive fashion. As you enter your new careers, search out and explore the multitude of available opportunities. Be ready to adapt to change and bear well the many privileges and responsibilities that will be yours. Dale L. Berne, Principal In your various pursuits I wish you every happiness and success. BACK ROW, LEFT TO RIGHT: Michael Wood, Alfred Guarino, Rick Young, Mike Martin, Bob Bailey, William Manning. During the time of her absence this year, we have come to realize how important a teacher she has been on our faculty these many years. We can truthfully say that Mrs. Allen is more to us than a teacher. She is sympathetic; and always ready to give of her time and efforts in guiding a student when the need calls. Mrs. Allen has a quality that is sadly lacking in our world today - sincerity, along with a fine sense of humor. Mrs. Allen, the class of 1970 loves you. Class of 1970 64 8 12 13 14 Class President s Message One of the most important chapters of our lives has just ended. High school has been a long road to travel, but looking back, we have enjoyed many moments as classmates along this road. The associations among the class of '70 are ones that will always be remembered. Yet, we must also prepare ourselves for the future. Beyond our days of high school, the new and challenging experiences that await us will be determined by our decisions. These decisions are the beginning of a journey of life, one that promises to be very exciting no matter which way a person goes. As each student starts his journey through life, a part of Hartford High will go with him. As my final function as Senior class president, I would like to wish you all the very best of luck. 16 George Packard SENIORS ELIZABETH FERN ADAMS Liz CSF 1,2; FTA 1; Choir 1,2,4; JV Basketball 2; JV Softball 2; Yearbook Staff 4; Prom Committee 3; Hurricane Staff 2; Student Council 4; Ski Club 4; Big Brother-Big Sister 4; UN Assembly 2; Senior Play 4. VERMC.? Student Council President s Message ROBERT HA THORN That time which we Seniors have all waited for and dreaded is just around the comer. When we graduate, the first thing we think about is where we are headed in the near future. I would like to pause for a moment to reflect upon the past. Presently, I am leaving the top position in an organization whose functions and purposes I believe very strongly in. I was, am, and always will be honored by the fact that people in school believed in me enough to trust me. Let me briefly list some of the things that the Council and I have been able to accomplish with the friendly help and cooperation from Mr. Berne, Mr. Gates, Mr. Harrison, and the School Board. The establishment of a very effective Student Involvement Committee, opening of the library for night studies, reevaluation and abolition of the dress code, and new ways of financing new programs. We have done many other jobs which are little, nitty-gritty things which are important in the everyday working of the Council. I sincerely hope that the underclassmen will do everything in their power to make the Student Council as effective as possible and still remain in lOO o cooperation with the Administration. The season opened with a 16-6 victory over Woodstock. Both touchdowns were scored by Danny Reed on quarterback sneaks. The line played a very aggressive game. The next game was a tough 8-0 loss to Poultney. The Hurricanes just never could get going at full speed, although, they were near the Poultney goal line several times. The next two games were victories at home, knocking off West Rutland 30-6 and Fair Haven 32-0. Then came the bam burner” at Bellows Falls. For over 3 quarters neither team could score until Danny Reed hit Ralph Gray with a touchdown pass to put Hartford ahead 8-0. Bellows Falls then matched down the field and tied the score. Our boys battled back and with only 4 seconds remaining, Danny, again, found Ralph Gray for die winning score. The next big victory was over the Lebanon Raiders 28-16. The highlight of this game was a 79 yard kick-off return by Ed Doubleday. The final game of the season was a battle with Windsor, a team that had averaged 40 points a game and the Hurricanes went down to defeat 29-14. Seniors leaving the squad are Captain, George Packard, Ralph Gray, Dan Doneley, Dan Reed, Ed Doubleday, Jack Potter, Ken Isenor, Ross Dwyer, Gary Ballard, Duane Gibson, Mike Martin, and Manager, Rick Young, and Denny Geran. Good line play is often overlooked. This year we had some fine line play, led by Captain, Packard at the center of the line, with Jack Potter. Ross Dwyer and Rick Wright as guards, and Paul Marsh, Bill Capron, Denny Geran, and Gary Gove as tackles. Hartford s co-captains for next year are Stuart Ricker and Bill Capron. The team would like to thank coaches McCanna, Dyer, Potter and Taylor for the effort and long hours they gave. Also, a word of thanks to trainer Vic Birt. 110 Basketball FIRST ROW; D. Reed, C. The opening game was a thrilling upset victory over highly favored Hanover, 72-65. The following week the Hurricanes scored an even greater upset by knocking off the Montpelier Solons, 65-58, a team that was considered among the 3 strongest in the state. Immediately banners began to fly with thoughts of state championship involvement. Unfortunately, the bubble burst by Hartford suffering 6 straight defeats; until an excellent 69-46 victory over Springfield was brought about. A paragraph must be devoted to Hartford's final victory, again an upset, over Windsor, 70-65. It was an excellently placed game all the way. Dan Donley was the super star of this victory, with help from Packard and Reed. This game emphasized the concept that the Hurricanes were the team that might have been.” With a few breaks the other way they could have had an excellent season. A nostalgic note was added at half time when Coach McCanna was given the game ball in honor of his retirement from coaching basketball after 23 years. Glowing tributes were given to him and newspapers throughout the state called attention to his fine teams of the past - and to his exceptionally fine humorous personality. All will be pleased to know that Coach McCanna will remain as football coach and work in physical education. 115 117 118 Final Whistle—Victory—and Congratulations to Coach McCanna Hockey BACK ROW: W. A great deal more interest is being shown in this sport. This year’s record of 6-7 for our Third full season of play indicates a good record for this short span of time. For next year, the team will certainly miss the presence of seven graduating seniors. Of the 29 goals socred this year, twenty-six were put in by our seniors. The whole front line will be lost, along with the center on the second line. One defense and one goalie will be lost. With Pee Wee hockey gaining great popularity, the future for good hockey at H. H. S. looks bright. Also for the future, John Dyer looks excellent as a defense man, and John Aher, an 8th grader, looks good as a goalie. Honors this year go to Danny Grant, who scored the most goals; and Ken Bowen the most points. D. Gibson won the Most Valuable Player award. The Mike Sheret award goes to Mike Martian. Cheers for Coach Bouthillier who is working so hard to produce a great team. Keep it up Coach. 120 Basketball A. Dean, B. Briggs, M. McCanna, C. Ros-enbeck, R. Clark, D. Gibson, M. Powden, S. The Girls Varsity Team had an 11-3 record with losses going to Lebanon and Stevens. Leading the team in scoring was Rose Clark with 128 points. At the Newport game, Rose set an individual scoring record of 22 points. Other outstanding seniors contributing to this year's team were Mary Powden and Anne Stone. Donna Gibson, a sophomore, led with most rebounds both offensively and defensively and Betsy Briggs, a junior, chipped in with 101 points. The Junior Varsity team had a 7-3 record with losses to Lebanon, Hanover and Windsor. Varsity Field Hockey LEFT TO RIGHT: B. Ratcliffe, B. Briggs, D. Pogar, M. Mc-Canna, A. Stone, Mrs. Karlson, B. The five seniors on the varsity squad; goal scorers, Marsha Smith and Bobbie Hathorn, speedy defense player Anne Stone, goalie Deb Trottier, and the team's most versitele' player, Sally Ratcliffe, were a great asset to the team. Many members attended the Mere-stead Hockey Camp for two seasons. This, too, greatly contributed to the teams successful season. The Junior Varsity team also did a fine job with a record of three wins, two ties and three losses. The team wishes to express sincere appreciation to Mr. Rip Hathorn and a group of interested parents who sponsored the first girls' banquet. And many thanks, also, to Mr. Gates, vho was the guest speaker as well as the team's good-luck charm. The girls are looking forward to another undefeated season next year; and with a great coach like Mrs. Karlson, how could their season end up any other way? The Hartford Ski Team had a better than average year this year under the guidance of their new coach, Mr. Fisk. The team only participated in three meets because of transportation problems. The high point of the season was die meet at LaSallette where George Ostler took first place which won the meet for Hartford. The team is anx iously looking forward to next year with hopes of entering more meets. The Cross-Country team, under the direction of Miss Pond, didn't enter any meets this year, but next year they will surely be a threat to any competitor. 123 The teams worked hard getting equipment in condition and in painting slalom poles for practice sessions. ACTIVITIES Winter Carnival This year the Winter Carnival was a great success. Each class demonstrated tremendous enthusiasm and it was an unforgettable week of fun. Throughout the week, preliminaries were held in a variety of sports and many braved the cold nights and to build snow statues to the theme of Yesterday’s Winter. The highlight of the winter carnival was the annual dance sponsored by the Honor Society, at which time the results of the sports events, the overall winner of the Carnival and the Carnival Queen and her court were announced. The Junior Class came out on top with the highest number of points to win the Carnival. The Sophomores won the snow-statue competition which put them in second-place. The Seniors took third place and the Freshmen fourth place. Diane Devost was crowned queen of the Winter Carnival by Mr. Berne, Principal. Her court was made up of Elke Ostler, Martha McCanna, Sue Morency, and Donna Mock. Many thanks go to the Student Council for its careful organization and hard work during Carnival week. 128 Class Mosts Senior Class Sponsors GATEWAY MOTORS THE BEAUTY LOUNGE L.G. BALFOUR CO.
