We will remember Greg as one who never failed to give a helping hand to one in need. Rough wind, that moanest loud Grief too sad for song; Wild wind, when sullen cloud Knells all the night long; Sad storm, whose tears are in vain, Bae woods, whose branches strain, Deep caves and dreary main. Wail, for the world’s wrong! The person of him may go, but the Best part of him stays, It stays forever. The faculty hopes that you will look back upon the last four years as beneficial and enjoyable. We have enjoyed You. May you find your past education a sound foundation upon which to build your future life. Sincerely, John P. Gates FACULTY GUIDANCE CO-ORDINATOR’S MESSAGE Of course no one knows what the future holds in store for us but, of a good beginning cometh a good end,” TO THE GRADUATES OF 1968 This is my first year as Guidance Co-ordinator at Hartford High School and, although my acquaintance with you has been of only one-year’s duration, I am more than interested in your welfare. I have been impressed by members of the class who are determined to face reality and do everything within their power to resolve indecisions regarding their future. As someone has said, ... though there is no reason why every man cannot grasp all the happiness of which he is capable, he has to keep reaching.” Members of the guidance staff congratulate you upon successfully completing twelve years of formal education - may these years serve as a substantial base upon which to build your future. iV Curtis Lamberton JOHN P. Anthony 14 Hartford - - - - 23 S. Burlington — ... 0 Hartford ... 6 Windsor - 6 The 1967 football season ended with a 4-3-1 record. With this year's successful season, a school record of three straight winning years of football was established. Our senior boys thus finished with a four year career record of 17-13-2. This included a tie for the State Championship last year. Class I. We started off well with straight wins away from home over Woodstock 34-6 and North Country 38-0. Our next game saw us playing Bellows Falls and losing 20-0. This marked the first time in three years since we had been shut out. The next 2 games were played before a home crowd, and our defense stood out in both games as we shut out S. Burlington 23-0 and Fair Haven 7-0. The last three games were somewhat of a dissappointment as we lost to a strong Middlebury team 19-7, and were then upset by Mt. Anthony 14-7. The season ended with a 6-6 tie with Windsor. Special mention should be given to all the Senior boys on the team as they certainly will be hard to replace next year. Gone via graduation will be Jerry Bachelder, Gay Reed, Alan Mathon, our co-captains, plus Jim Jardine, Tome Coutermarsh, Joe Hagerman, Ernie Nalette, John Spaulding, Bill Burnett, Chuck Powden, Tom Scelza, Phil Adams and Brian Smith. Doug Smith, Head Manager for 4 years, will be greatly missed by Coaches McCanna and Dyer. At the football banquet the following awards were made: Most Valuable Player to Jerry Bachelder, Most Improved Player Award to Jim Jardine, Tiger Trophy to Charles Hall, Most Improved J. V. Player to Jack Potter. A special Iron Men Award was presented to John Spaulding and Gay Reed for having earned their football letter four years. One of our tri-captains, Jerry Bachelder, became the second player in Hartford football history to gain over 1000 yards in rushing. Much credit goes also to Gay Reed and John Spaulding who, along with Bachelder, were candidates for the All-State Football team. Congratulations to our Coaches McCanna and Dyer, for a job well done. Although not selected for tourney play we ended with a 9-11 record. It is hoped that the improvement pace will continue. The season opened with a fine 73-58 win over Hanover. Brown and Scelza were the big guns with their shooting. Next came a heartbreaking loss 83-74 to St. Joseph - Foley and Batchelder played a very aggressive game but in vain. Traveling to Springfield the Hurricanes lost 98-73 in one of the highest scoring games of the season, with Scelza hitting for 25 points. The following week came another victory over Hanover 83- 74 and another close loss 71-67 to St. Josephs. In both games effective team play was in evidence. Playing at Newport, Hartford's first basketball visit to the Northeast Kingdom , we won a 64-63 thriller. Then followed consistency of a kind by the Hurricanes, with four straight wins and five straight losses. The seasons' total was 1322 points for 66 point average per game as to the opponents 1414 points and 70 average. A good part of the team will be lost by graduation, including the following high scores: Scelza (346), Brown (319), Batchelder (266). Foley (113). and Reed (82). The Junior Varsity ended with a 4-14 record. High scorers were Ricker (152), Packard (106), and Young (103). The Freshman squad looked fairly good with a 4-5 record. Jay Reed, Joe Guarino, and Dave King showed promise for the future. IRLS BASKETBALL VARSITY 1st ROW: C. Rosenbeck, M. Powden, D. Rogers, M. Smith, G. This year's team was composed of girls from all classes. Jane Abbott and Patty Perkins were the co-captains. 85 BASEBALL 1967 RECORD Hartford---------1 Hartford------- - 9 Hartford---------6 Hartford---------3 Hartford---------1 Hartford---------5 Hartford------- - 5 Hartford---------3 Hartford---------1 Hartford---------6 Hartford---------0 Hartford---------4 Hartford-------12 Rutland ------- 9 The 1967 Varsity Baseball Team had a 7-6 win- Springfield--------4 loss record. Hanover-------------1 Hartford finished second in the Connecticut Valley League behind Windsor, and narrowly missed the Vermont State Playoff birth. The Hartford team also placed three players on the Connecticut Valley League All-Star Team. They were John Spaulding. Scott Phillips, and Jerry Parrott. The highlights of the season were winning two games from our arch-rival Lebanon. The first was a 6-1 victory pitched from the mound by Bill Brown who allowed Lebanon only four hits and one run. The second game was a 5-4 thriller--with hurler, Bill Brown, again pitching the seven inning game. The big blow in this contest was Jerry Parrott's double scoring Bob Bellimer from first base. In one of the most thrilling games of the season, Hartford downed Bellows Falls 5-4. Scott Phillips pitched the entire game allowing only four hits and four runs. Hartford went into the bottom of the seventh, trailing 4-3, but managed to score two runs on John Spaulding's clutch single. Seniors being lost by graduation include Tom Rogers. Den McCarthy, Scott Phillips, Jerry Parrott, Tom Woods, and Bob Bellimer. Coach Ken Dyer believes he has a good pitcher in Bill Brown, who should help carry the 1968 team to a successful season. GIRLS' SKI TEAM Windsor------------5 Bellows Falls------4 Lebanon - ---------4 St. Johnsbury------2 Springfield------- 4 Hanover------------8 Windsor------------2 Bellows Falls------0 St. Johnsbury-----13 The Girl's Ski Team, led by Captain Jane Abbott, had a short season. But we placed very well in the local meets and placed in the larger meets, with hopes of doing much better next year. We attended a Ski School at Ashley House during Christmas vacation. At the camp we learned of the skills involved in racing and in most cases were able to transfer this practice to our own races. The team is very encouraged about next season. We have a young and very promising member coming up in addition to the three older members. We are anxious to recruit new members from both the Senior and Junior High School. The team wishes to thank Mr. Fortin for being our coach and to thank Mr. MacKenzie for the transportation. RACES Sonnenburg - Hartford vs Woodstock East Corinith - Hartford vs Bradford. The 1967 Hartford High Track Team had a successful season. The team compiled a dual and tri-meet of 5-3 record. This winning effort was accomplished despite unseasonable weather which undoubtedly hindered the training procedure greatly. The wins came against Windsor. Woodstock, Mount St. Joseph. Springfield, and Lebanon. The losses at the hands of Lebanon, Manadnock, and Hanover. Two Hartford competitors set new school records in their special events. These were Jim Young, in the pole vault, 11' 10 1 2 ; Billy Pogar, in the 440, 52.5 seconds. Many other of our athletes improved upon their personal records and a high degree of competitive spirit was evident throughout the season. In the Valley, Southern District, and State meets, Hartford held its own even more than in recent years. We came in third in the Valley meet and tied for fourth in the Southern District meet. The boys representing us in the state meet were as follows: Captain Jim Delary in the 220 and 100, John Brockway in the high and low hurdles, Billy Pogar in the 440, Larry Rogers in the pole vault, Jim Young in the pole vault, and Bob McKenzie in the 880. At the awards assembly at the end of school, John Brockway received the John E, Abbott award. This award is presented for most improvement. Jim Delary received the Track Meister award as the highest point getter. 88 Much credit must be to the track coach, Mr. Ratcliffe, for a job well done. Hartford’s first full year in competition did not make headlines in the win column. However, great improvement in the hockey game was noted. In three games Hartford entered the locker room leading the opponents and in three other games fought hard to lose by only one point. The loss of six seniors will definitely place a large burden on the underclassmen for next year, some of whom show great promise. There has been a fine spirit shown this year, along with a determination to win. Next year we hope for a better season. 91 JUNIOR PROM JUNIOR PROM AFTERGLOW These are the moments we would savor In the afterglow of tomorrow, When faces and events long have ebbed Into the shadows of our memory.
