FOREWORD As Editor of the 1967 KEY, 1 wish to thank each and every person responsible for making this yearbook a success. We. the Staff, have tried to make this one of the most interesting and informative yearbooks ever published at HHS, and it should magnify the fact that we have always been considered an outstanding class--academically, athletically, and socially. We feel that the personality of the class has been successfully expressed in this year’s KEY. We hope that in some way it will help remind you, in future years, of the pleasant memories formed here. One of the ablest members of our class, we will always remember Doug for his sunny disposition and his ability to work successfully with students and teachers alike. No goodbye was said. No hint of parting. Leaving behind His days of youth. With him went The grieving of many... Within our hearts His memory lingers As graduation nears. C.S. Student Council President ■ ■ • ■ . .4 M' mp):. Council President's Message High School for all of us has been a rich and rewarding experience. To me Hartford High School means much more than I can ever say. As a sophomore, I was accepted as an outsider, and now in my Senior year you have chosen me to serve as your Council President. The Council this year has worked hard and made many accomplishments. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Student body, the members of the Student Council, the Faculty, and all others who helped in any way to make 19S6-67 another successful year for our Student Council. For me, the position of Council President will be an experience which I will always remember. Sincerely, Principal's Message The Class of 1966 has set many records at Hartford High School. You will be the largest class to ever graduate from H.H.S. More members of your class won recognition in the National Merit Test. More students from your class will enter college and other post high school educational programs. You have taken good care of your financial responsibilities. Your Senior Play was the most polished production in many years. You had one of the finest Junior Proms. As a class you have written an enviable history. Your past achievement augurs well for the future. The Faculty expects great things from you. We will follow your progress with keen interest. On behalf of the Faculty, I extend to you our congratulations. We hope that the future will be good to you. We believe that you are ready to work to achieve the good things of life. The latch string is always out at Hartford High School. Come back to visit us often. Best wishes, John P. Gates JOHN A. FREITAS Superintendent of Schools Ph. B. , Boston College M. With a fine 7-1 record our Hurricanes became State Co-Champions of Division II, so recognized by the Headmasters. Throughout the State there was great puzzlement as to why Hartford High was not declared State Champs on their own, since our record was 7-1 compared to Lyndon's 6-1. Numerous all-time records were established by our team. Among these were the following: Best all time season record------------------------------------------------------ 7-1 Most number of wins in a season--------------------------------------..._________ -7 Most points scored in a season------------------------------------------------ 256 Most points in one game------------------------------------------------------------60 Most touchdowns in one season---------------------------------------------------- 40 Highest point average per game---------------------------------------------------- 32 Most number of players scoring in one season--------------------------------------------15 6 37 -6 - 0 Although this was a team effort, numerous individual players received recognition from sportswriters of the state as they were named to All-State offensive and defensive teams. At the football banquet Scott Phillips received the Most Valuable Player award; Larry Cartier the Tiger Trophy; and Jim Young and Billy Pogar were selected as the most improved players of the season. When practice started on'August 22 there were 17 seniors out of a squad of 40 to answer the call of Coaches McCanna and Dyer. As the season opened against Woodstock we had 9 seniors in the starting offensive line and 8 seniors on the defensive unit. We swept by Woodstock 18-7; Newport 60-6; Bellows Falls 30-13; South Burlington 31-0; and Fair Haven 32-6. Then came the Bad Day at Black Rock when the roof caved in and Middlebury inflicted our only loss 37-7. It was one of those games when everything seemed to go wrong for the Hurricanes. We then bounced back to defeat Mt. Anthony 41-6; and finished real strong in our traditional game at Windsor with a smashing 37-0 victory. This was a particularly gratifying win as Windsor had knocked off Middlebury 26-18 the week before. Although some excellent players will be lost by graduation, there is an optimistic feeling that Hartford High will field another strong team next year. To the entire squad we say - a job well done. Catholic 72 PLAY OFF Hartford 62 Springfield 71 Playing their third season in the tough Southern Vermont League, the Hurricanes ended the regular season with an 8-12 record. For the first time in 10 years Hartford was selected for a play-off game to the tourney and went down to defeat in a hard fought battle against Springfield, 71-62. In the past three years H. H. S. has finished higher each year in the final standings. Coach McCanna had figured on a 500 or better season with the return of his top 3 scorers Phillips, Gaudette, and Parrott. Misfortune struck the team with Jerry Parrott sustaining a broken leg in football and was unable to join the basketball team until the last couple of games. The team missed Jerry badly, as he was the quarterback in the back court and a fine scorer. Seniors hitting the graduation trail are: Co-Captains Dick Gaudette and Jerry Parrott, Scotty Phillips, Harold Fournier, Denny McCarthy, and Tom Woods. Of the 1288 points scored by the Hurricanes, 833 points were scored by the above seniors. The following are the high light statistics of the season: 1. All time scoring record of 1288 points. 2. A Southern Vermont League record of 102 points on one game against Otter Valley. 3. Two big wins over Windsor. 4. Scotty Phillips was the leading scorer of the S. V. L. with 325 points. 5. Key wins against Windsor and Brattleboro in the drive for a play-off birth. 6. Fine showing of the boys against Springfield. 7. Good team scoring balance as 3 of our boys scored over 200 points during the season, along with Scotty's total of 334. Returning letter winners Billy Brown, Tom Scelza, Jerry Batchelder, George Foley, Gay Reed and Steve Brockway will carry the hopes of H. H. S. basketball next year. We feel they are capble of stepping into the mighty big shoes of the departing seniors. Junior Varsity Basketball FRONT ROW: G. Packard, E, Doubleday, C, Hall, D. Follensbee, R. Young, E. Catholic - ---47 The Junior Varsity ended the season with a 9-11 record. Although the boys opened the season with 5 straight losses, the season ended with 3 straight victories over Windsor, Otter Valley, and Bennington Catholic. Other highlights of the season were victories over Bellows Falls and West Rutland. It is hoped that the 2 victories over Bennington Catholic point to better things to come for Hartford basketball. Bennington Catholic is the school that hopes to continue turning out State Championship teams. Perhaps the most heartbreaking game to lose was the 49-44 loss to Springfield. This was a close game all the way, with the lead changing hands many times. It was played at Springfield, and it gave the machine town fans an opportunity to watch the excellent floor play of Ricky Young and George Foley. Steve Brockway and Gay Reed both played an aggressive game. This game was settled in the last 2 minutes. Perhaps the most desired victory of the season came with the 65-57 victory over Bellows Falls; this was after being defeated in the opening game by Bellows Falls, 55-41. Tom Scelza, Paul Fournier, and Steve Brockway were outstanding on offensive and Gay Reed did some great rebounding under the boards. The steadying influence of George Foley in the backcourt and Gay Reed on rebounding were highlights in most of the games. Steve Brockway averaged a good 13.5 points per game and Paul Fournier with a 9. 5. The team averaged 49.3 per game to its opponents 50.9 All of the boys on this year's Junior Varsity should be of great help in bringing about a winning season to the Hartford Varsity next season. Girls' Varsity Basketball FIRST ROW: Miss Russ (Coach), Mary Bean, Missy Jasmin, Gay Brown, Virginia Guarino, Debbie Rogers, Susan Neff (Manager) SECOND ROW: Sheila Jurras, Clarissa Mueller, Maureen Smith, Mary Ruotsala, Rose Clark, Carol Rosenbeck 1966-67 Record HOME Hartford - - - ■ 29 Hanover 26 Hartford 25 Woodstock 19 Hartford 35 Mascoma 11 Hartford 35 Lebanon 52 Hartford 26 Windsor 25 AWAY Hartford 16 Hanover 23 Hartford 51 Woodstock 14 Hartford 20 Mascoma 16 Hartford 20 Lebanon 37 The girls varsity basketball team had a very successful year. Out of their nine games, they suffered only three losses with 6 victories. This year's good record was due a great deal to the efforts of seniors, Gay Brown, Maureen Smith, Mary Ruotsala, Clarissa Mueller and Virginia Guarino, who will leave many spaces to be filled in next years line-up. The majority of Hartford’s scoring was monopolized by Missy Jasmin, who was high scorer, Maureen Smith, Gay Brown, and Rose Clark, with Virginia Guarino and Louise Martin filling in for the four. The defense did a great deal of the hard work during the season. Mary Ruotsala never ceased to put in an excellent job of rebounding and block shots. Mary Bean and Clarissa Mueller were two aggressive defensive hustlers who helped make Hartford's record what it was. Carol Rosenbeck provided needed height for some good rebounding also. The major event of Hartford's entire season and probably one that made it all worthwhile, for most of the girls, was its long-awaited defeat over Hanover at home. It was a close game the whole way, but Hanford managed to come out victorious after tense minutes action. Mary Ruotsala and Maureen Smith were this years captains. Sue Neff served as official orange cutter or more formally known as manager. With the loss of five seniors, next year's team will have a tough record to beat, but all prospects look good. Girls Junior Varsity Basketball FIRST ROW: Andrea Lowery, Marsha Smith, Roberta Hathorn, Sheila Kapise. It was due mainly to the excellent teamwork exhibited in every game. All members of the team have great potential for next year. After a very slow opening game that was lost to Windsor by the ghastly score of 26 - 4, the girls continuted to show improvement and ended the season with a respectable 5-3 record. Highlights of the season were a pair of victories both Woodstock and Mascoma. Another sweet victory was over arch rival Hanover by a 20-7 score. Forwards Marsha Smith, Debbie Rogers, Bobby Hathorn, Anne Stone, Tina Eccher, and Andrea Lowery were all team hustlers, with Debbie and Marsha doing most of the scoring. The good job on defense is evident by the low scores of the opponents. This was due mainly to the efforts of Cindy Bryne, Lausanne Allen, Colleen Nalette, and Sheila Kapise. Great things are expected from all these girls in the shaping of next years varsity. Their experiences, as well as their losses were many. At Woodstock they were fed' punch by the Woodstock team which made them so happy that they almost lost the game. They all sang songs, danced, and performed cheers in the field for half time entertainment. None of them can possibly forget the drizzly day they were bussed to Towle High School at 12:30 only to have the game cancelled. The forlorn, abandoned Girl's Field Hockey Team sat in the Towle High School Cafeteria until 4:30 P. M. waiting for the busses to pick them up. They did, however manage to entertain themselves. The crowning achievement of the season was the tie with Hanover. It was the closest the team has come to beating them in years. The defense should be credited with this tie for they outdid themselves that day and almost every other day. Led by Mary Ruotsala and backed up by the underclassmen Mary Bean, Trudy Weigle, Linda Hull, Rosie Clark, Jane Abbott and Cyndy Bryon the defense did a remarkable job. The forward line consisting of Debbie Rogers, Patty Hathorn, Ginny Hazen Maureen Smith, Peggy Ratcliffe and Martha Weigle made a total of eight goals during the season. The team. Coach Russ, and Captains Peggy and Martha had an enjoyable season. It rained, snowed and blew, they practiced, won and lost. They failed and succeeded but had a healthful happy time. V. team had a cold season with a 1-4-2 record. They worked hard and showed a great deal of enthusiasm. In spite of any difficulties that arose, such as Nancy Cross's ripped britches, the defense always succeeded in suppressing the enemy to a minimum. Marsha Smith, Carol Rosenbeck, Bobby Hathorn, Elke Osier, Gail Simonds and Gail Wright were responsible for such good defensive action. Backing them up with her good-hearted encouragement was goalie, Cindy Bryon. The lack of points scored by the offense was no indication of the ability and experience they gained from working together as a team. The front line consisted of Cathy Guarino, Sally Ratcliffe, Doreen Hamel, Mary Pogar and Patty Perkins. They all plan to return to the field hockey battles next year. Each member of the J. V. team has vowed to play on a championship team next year. There can be only praise for such determination and love of the game. Carry on. Girls! Track FIRST ROW: R. Labelle, A. Mathon, J. Hazelton, Coach John son. 1 y S- The 1966 Track Team enjoyed one of the most successful seasons in the history of the school. They were undefeated in seven consecutive dual and triangular meets. In the bigger sectional meets, Hartford took second in the Twin State Valley meet and fifth in the Southern District. In the latter meet ten members of the squad qualified in ten events for the State meet. This was the largest group to qualify for the State meet from Hartford. Outstanding performances during the season were: James Young, new pole vault record, 11'6 1 4 ; Charlie Powden, a new mile record 4:48 ; a new H. H. S. relay record, 1.35.6 by Bill Pogar, Hal Fournier, Larry Cartier, and Jim DeLary. John Abbott and John Clerkin turned in good performances in hurdles and weights. Prospects for next year look very bright. Left to right: John Dupuis, manager, James White, Wallace Stoelting, James Jardines, John Curtis, Douglas Smith, Gary Crewson, Russell Johnson, Kenneth Bowen, and Michael Martin. Absent: Raymond Merchand, David Henderson, and Butch Manning. The highlight of the season was a narrow 1-0 loss to a good Brattleboro team, which at the time was favored to repeat as Vermont Champions. With only one senior lost through graduation. Coach Ken Dyer, beginning his 13th season as coach, looks forward to a successful 1967 season. But she did not consider it as such. Softball was her one 'love throughout her high school years and ever since then each spring she has oiled her glove in anticipation of some good ball. Last spring her hopes were realized and each day after teaching her elementary students she picked up that glove and came to the high school .to teach the fine art of softball. She incurred not a few problems but always managed to overcome them - even losing a game. She played only those members of the team who earned that right. She was fair. The Girls' Softball Teams of 1966-67 want to say. Thanks, Coach and please come back next year.
