DEDICATION MR. ROBERTS The class of 1966 wishes to dedicate this page to the memory of Mr. Gordon Roberts for the help he gave not only to our own class, but to members of many other classes. His concern for us and our future was evident in extracurricular activities as well as in the classroom. All of us were greatly impressed with the time that he was willing to take to give individual •t.1% • • ••• •V: • V attention to any student when it was needed. Mr. Roberts was an inspiration for all who knew him. and we shall always remember him as both a dedicated teacher and a friend. •'V. ' ijSysy t?- • 0 •■v . ; j .'. • i . .. '•'f DEDICATION The class of 1966 dedicates this page to the memory of our class. He was the co-captain of the football team and also was very active in Student Council. There were very few people who he could not claim as friends. His cheerful attitude and willingness to help when help was needed willalwaysbe remembered. Although he will not be with us on graduation night, we know that Billy’s memory will be present in the hearts of all students and teachers. It is a sad but necessary end to all the wonderful experiences we have shared together, and an exciting beginning to our individual futures. Certainly all of us are leaving here with many fond memories. Attending Hartford High has indeed been a “golden opportunity.” On behalf of the class of ”66,” Iwant to express the gratitude we feel for our beautiful school and for our fine teachers, who have contributed so much to our success. In the season's opener against Springfield. Hartford shocked everyone with a 13-12 win. The victory was the first over Springfield in 33 years. A blocked extra point attempt by Springfield in the closing seconds prevented a tie. A rugged Hartford defense pinned M.S.J. for two safties in the Hurricanes' second game. The defense not only won the game with the safties but also defended their goal twice against the threatening M.S.J. offense. Missing five of its regular starters in the Bellows Falls game, the crippled Hartford team lost 13-6. B.F. scored on an intercepted pass and a bobbled Hartford punt attempt. Hartford scored its touchdown after Scott Phillips intercepted a B.F. pass. The Hurricane defense excelled again in the Benn-Hi game, recovering four fumbles which were later converted into Hartford touchdowns. A strong team effort and the feats of quarterback Scott Phillips produced the third Hurricane victory. A usually strong Rutland team, scoring four touchdowns in one period, defeated Hartford in its fifth game. Back Dan Wells returned a kickoff 93 yards for the first Hartford score, and Scott Phillips passed to end Tom Rogers for the second. A 77-yard drive, terminated by a two yard touchdown plunge by Dan Wells, brought Hartford from behind and gave them their fourth victory in the Middlebury game. The traditional end-of-the-season game between Windsor and Hartford deadlocked in a 0-0 tie. A 27 yard touchdown pass play from Phillips to Rogers was called back on illegal motion penalty; a call that naturally ired many Hurricane fans. If a season is considered successful with an even number of wins and losses, then the 1965-66 season has to be regarded as more than just successful. Cheers to the team and all the coaching staff. Catholic 65 The basketball season got off to a poor start with only a single win in the first 8 games, playing in the tough Southern Vermont League. However, the second half of the season our boys showed tremendous improvement as they gained in experience and started to jell as a unit. They climaxed this upsurge by defeating the State Champion Bennington Catholic team 67-65 in the final game of the season. Sportswriters throughout the state acclaimed this victory as the biggest upset of the season. The won-lost record does not tell the complete story as our boys lost 5 games by a total of only 12 points.. Thus, with a little luck, they might have finished 12-8 instead of our 7-13. We were fortunate in moving up in the league standing over last year. Prospects for next year look bright with our first three leading scorers returning. The major difficulty facing Coach McCanna will be in finding replacements for Capt. Lovely and Ron Tallman. These 2 seniors covered themselves with glory as they continually outbounded bigger men all year. Tim scored 208 points for the season and Ronnie added 151. Scott Phillips, with some spectacular shooting, was high man for the year with 282. Co-captain for next year Jerry Parrott and Dick Gaudette each scored the same number of points — 239. Catholic - 68 The Junior Varsity team finished the season with an 8-12 record, playing with four Juniors and seven sophomores. It was an interesting season as the boys displayed great potential. The shooting ability was some of the best seen in over a decade from a junior varsity squad. With improvement in defense and growth (height) there should be a fairly good outlook for next year's team. The high point of the season were two victories over Mt. St. Joseph - 56-41 and 43-40. The second victory was one in which the lead changed hands many times. Another sweet victory was over arch-rival Windsor, 67-52. The season was concluded on a blazing note with a heart stopper victory over Bennington Catholic, 69-68, to duplicate the Varsity victory over the State Champions. The high scorers for the year were Billy Brown with 340 points and Tom Scelza with 226. These two boys could become the big offense for 1966-67. Fine floor work was turned in by Bob Bellimer and George Foley. Not enough credit can be given to the rebounding efforts of Tom Rogers, Gay Reed. Gerry Batchelder, and Tom Woods. With the efforts of the returning letter winners, Pat Walker, Becky Akers. Jan Young, Chick Benedict, Di Briggs, and Maureen Smith, and the other players the team showed fine spirit. An important factor in the team’s winning season was the fast, alert passes, and individual ball handling. Missy Jasmin was our high scorer with a number of 113 points. Fortunately she is only a sophomore and hopefully will be returning for the next two years. Her ceaseless antics proved both helpful and amusing to the team. Di Briggs intercepted many of the opponents passes, and set up plays for Hartford's offense. Mary Ruotsala was our star rebounder for the defense. Our greatest rival this year was Lebanon. Though we won our first game with them, they defeated us on their own court. As the final buzzer rang, Lebanon committed a foul. The two foul shots would have tied the game. Only one basket was made, leaving Lebanon with a victory of 17-16. Di Briggs and Luna Ricker were the co-captains, and Anne Dockery and Marsha Porter the hard working managers Although six seniors are leaving this year, next year proves to be quite promising, with many more exciting games to follow. The only loss came to Lebanon, 16-15. It was a defensive battle all the way with Lebanon dropping in the winning basket in the last few seconds of play. With a record of this kind it means that prospects for next year’s team look very good indeed. The high scorer for the year was Louise Martin with 36 points, followed by Gay Brown, Debbie Rogers, and Carol Rosenbeck, all scoring in the high twenties. Others showing sparks on the offense were Sarah McCanna, Patty Hat-horn and Virginia Guarino. Patty could not complete the season due to a sprain received in the Towle game. The hustling defensive aggregation was spearheaded by Peg Ratcliffe, Beth Melen, Clarissa Mueller, and Sheila Jurras. Strength of the defensive team was indicated by the 39-2 victory over the hapless Woodstock team, which no doubt was one of the most lopsided scores in America last year. Co-captains for the team were Debbie Rogers and Doreen Donley. Freshmen and Sophomores also made up the squad. All are looking forward to next year under Coach Novogrodsky’s capable direction. The forward line consisting of P. Ratcliffe, M. Alzner, D. Briggs, C. Benedict, and G. Hazen were an agressive combination. The center forward D. Briggs was often fed the ball by her teammates, and drove them into the goal. She finished the season as high scorer. The defensive halfbacks, M. Routsala, J. Young, and M. Weigal backed the forward line. With the fullbacks, D. Rogers and P. Hathorne, two freshmen, they worked successfully as a defensive unit. Although her goalie pads were quite awkward and the cages shakey, L. Ricker was our successful goalie. She was able to stop the hardest drives. The Windsor game was the most exciting, the two teams being fairly evenly matched. Windsor scored a goal, but due to technicalities it was disregarded. P. Ratcliffe then scored for Hartford, but this was not counted. The game ended in a tie. In the away game with Lebanon D. Briggs encountered the goalie in a penalty-bully, a situation that seldom occurs. The goalie fouled again and we received a point. Nevertheless, we lost the game, 2-1. Our co-captains were D. Briggs and J. Young and the managers were Pat Walker and Becky Akers.
