H. S. dropped a heartbreaker to Springfield, 7-6. The following week our boys lost a 14-0 decision to Bennington Catholic. Playing the roll of the underdog Hartford was then beaten by highly favored M.S. J., 33-6. Early in the first quarter, Quarterback Jim Clifford tallied the lone score on a twenty yard sprint. The next game saw Bellows Falls score with only seconds remaining to take a 13-6 victory. Again Jim Clifford scored on a short run for our lone touchdown. With the season half over and a record of no wins and four loses, H. H. S. traveled to Bennington for a profitable, 13-0 victory. This game featured the running of sophomore fullback, Dick Gaudette, and a strong goal stand. Despite the two loses to Rutland and Middlebury, H.H.S. came back strong against Windsor. The Midgets battled a long and hard fought game and when the final gun had sounded our team had won, 19-13. Again the fine defensive play of John Hull, Larry Cartier and Roger Tenny and the fine running of Dick Gaudette aided in the victory over our rival team. Much credit should go to the Seniors who were the nucleus of the team; Co-Capt. Jim Clifford, quarterback, who was elected to All-State, second team; Co-Capt. Roger Tenney, Tackle, Receiving honorable mention for All-State; Peter Schaal, Tackle; Bryan Porter and Steve Valley, Defensive ends; Roy Hathorn, Halfback; and Ken Parker, Punter. 5 SECOND ROW: T. Only two seniors were on this team. Next Year's team should be a good one with so many lettermen returning. A good offense should be worked out around Scott Philips, Jerry gamut, and Tim Lovely. General improvement by all underclassmen this season was noticed. The Junior Varsity should also be of some help as several players continued to show promise. Sophomore Scott Philips was the high scorer with 233 points, followed by Tim Lovely with 173. Captain Jim Clifford with 168 points, was a tower of strength on both offense and defense Bryan Porter, the other senior, proved to be a good rebounder and able substitute. Highlights of the season were wins over Otter Valley, Bennington High, and a big upset victory over West Rutland. Other then these victories there was not too much to cheer about. % I Vih’ Vowtihj Bctsk tbcM FIRST ROW: G. Brown, M. Alzner, J. Young, M. Smith. B. Akers, M. Benedict, P. Walker, D. Coutermarsh, M. However, by the season's end the team improved, especially in their ability to move the ball and infrequently toss it through the elusive basket. A thrilling overtime victory over visiting Lebanon, hot shooting in the game at Lebanon and during Towle's visit to Hartford, and some excellent periods against Hanover highlighted the season. The junior varsity team had a 2-6 record when the last buzzer sounded. Yet, all their games were marked by great team speed, even if this haste often resulted in a lost ball! As several of the junior varsity will add their quick skills to next year's varsity team, there is a promising future for girl's basketball at Hanford High School. Becky Akers and Dianne Briggs were co-captains of the varsity team. Peggy Ratcliffe and Mary Ruotsala co-captained the junior varsity team. At times the girls played an energetic brand ot hockey, but all too often their play was characterized by timidity and hesitation. These latter qualities were quite discouraging, for they contrasted so sharply with the brilliant play the girls displayed occasionally. Crisp passes, and alert defense, and overall hustle marked the contest with Mascoma, the second half of the first Hanover game, part of the second Windsor game (played in a chilly drizzle aside the prison in Windsor), part of the first Towle game, part of the Lebanon game, and all the second Towle game. Steady, though unspectacular play marked both Woodstock games. Everyone is hoping for an improved record next season. The junior varsity eleven worked hard in practice, but dropped their only two games, both to mighty Hanover. The 1965 varsity squad, composed of most of 1964's varsity, and augmented by several of the junior varsity players, should improve on 1964's record. Dianne Briggs and Judy Bomhower were the team's co-captains. V iS j SctS boM - 1 964- back ROW: R. Hathorn, D. Wells, R. Reed, R. Nugent, R. Harlow, Coach Dyer. MIDDLE ROW: M. Regione, L. Bristol, J. This year was climaxed by a playoff berth and second place in the strong Connecticut Valley League. In the state play-offs, Hartford lost the first game to Rice of Burlington, 3-1, on the Norwich University field. It turned out to be a tight game right up to the final out. The team was led by Captain Larry Batchelder, a senior with a great 7-3 record. He hurled an outstanding no-hitter against Hanover in the second game of the season. Several big league scouts were on hand to watch Larry perform in other games. Other outstanding players were Mike Regione, Mike Donahue (.300), and Jim Clifford (.316). Larry Batchelder made the Connecticut Valley All-State team for the third time and Mike Donahue for the first time. Coach Dyer will have a rebuilding job for 1965. He will have on hand five starters and seven letter winners returning. The returning starters will be Lee, Bristol, Jim Clifford, Harry Henderson, Danny Wells and Ricky Reed. TlOucU FIRST ROW: R. The eight seniors on the squad performed notably well in their events. Louis Napolitanio, the team captain, climaxed a highly successful high school career at the State Meet in Burlington. He won both the high and low hurdle events, becoming the state champion in the low hurdles for the third straight year. Earlier in the spring he set records at Hadley Field. Bellows Falls, in both the high and low hurdles, 15.2 for the highs and 20.3 for the lows. Arland Luce, William Toomey, David Briggs, Charlie Smith and underclassmen, such as Harold Fournier, Steve Valley, and John Abbott, provide us with the best group of distant and middle distant runners Hartford High has ever had. Greg Williams, Mike Plant and Leonard Spaulding was another trio of seniors who picked up valuable points in the High Hurdles, Broad Jump and 220 and 440. A more successful season is anticipated this year with the return of a large group of Sophomores and Freshmen bringing strength to all events.
