,4 2144 ' ,- ZZW - M08 - M65 With the construction on the new high school started in November of 1962, it is fairly certain that the class of 1963 will be the last class to graduate from the hallowed halls of old Hartford High on Barnes Avenue. It is fitting, therefore, that we present a brief historical account of secondary education in our town. The first high school in our town was located on the top floor of the old Grammar School, what is now the renovated Municipal Building. lt was known as White River Junction High School and two were graduated in the first class of 1891. Classes continued here for the next sixteen years, The present Hartford High School opened its doors in September of 1908 on a tract of land purchased for the sum of 33500. There were four classrooms and an assembly hall with a small stage and balcony. In this day of expansive gyms, capable of seating thousands, it is hard to believe that under the assem- bly hall was a space that served as a gym for that era. The present heating plant now occupies that space. By the twenties the building was too small and many additions began to be made. Shop classes took over the old gym. Home Economics and Art moved to the Practice House across the street. Manual Training moved into the basement and Typewriting went in over the balcony. During this time basket- ball games were held in the Gates Opera House, the present second floor of the J. I. Newberry Store. By 1934 an addition was authorized by voters at a cost of 360,000 and an auditorium to cost 340,000 The new rooms were ready by 1935, but not enough money had been appropriated to complete the gym. More money was voted in 1935 and digging under the auditorium fthe hard wayj was completed with WPA funds in 1935. Still short of money, another vote for funds had to be made to complete the base- ment in 1937. By the fall of 1938 it was necessary to move the junior high school into the building because of crowded conditions in the old Grammar School. ln 1952 the junior high and freshman class moved out when the new Memorial School was completed. In 1959 there- began a long series of surveys, discussion groups, village informational meetings, and a total of five regular and special town meetings before appropriations were finally passed for construc- tion of a four year senior high school. The total cost is to be approximately 31,250, 000. With full construction steam ahead it is hoped the students will enter the classrooms in September of 1963. When completed, along side the Memorial School, the town may boast of having one of the finest school plants in Vermont. We, the class of 1963, wish to congratulate the School Board members and Supt. John A. Freitas for the many months of hard labor that went into winning the town's approval for our new school. They may console themselves with the thought that nothing worthwhile is easily won. Fortunate are the classes to follow 1963---and good luck and best wishes to them. Class of 1963 'Me 544445 Emu!
