It is fitting, therefore, that we present a brief historical account of secondary education in our town. The first high school in our town was located on the top floor of the old Grammar School, what is now the renovated Municipal Building. lt was known as White River Junction High School and two were graduated in the first class of 1891. Classes continued here for the next sixteen years, The present Hartford High School opened its doors in September of 1908 on a tract of land purchased for the sum of 33500. There were four classrooms and an assembly hall with a small stage and balcony. In this day of expansive gyms, capable of seating thousands, it is hard to believe that under the assem- bly hall was a space that served as a gym for that era. The present heating plant now occupies that space. By the twenties the building was too small and many additions began to be made. Shop classes took over the old gym. Home Economics and Art moved to the Practice House across the street. Manual Training moved into the basement and Typewriting went in over the balcony. During this time basket- ball games were held in the Gates Opera House, the present second floor of the J. I. Newberry Store. By 1934 an addition was authorized by voters at a cost of 360,000 and an auditorium to cost 340,000 The new rooms were ready by 1935, but not enough money had been appropriated to complete the gym. More money was voted in 1935 and digging under the auditorium fthe hard wayj was completed with WPA funds in 1935. Still short of money, another vote for funds had to be made to complete the base- ment in 1937. By the fall of 1938 it was necessary to move the junior high school into the building because of crowded conditions in the old Grammar School. ln 1952 the junior high and freshman class moved out when the new Memorial School was completed. In 1959 there- began a long series of surveys, discussion groups, village informational meetings, and a total of five regular and special town meetings before appropriations were finally passed for construc- tion of a four year senior high school. The total cost is to be approximately 31,250, 000. With full construction steam ahead it is hoped the students will enter the classrooms in September of 1963. When completed, along side the Memorial School, the town may boast of having one of the finest school plants in Vermont. We, the class of 1963, wish to congratulate the School Board members and Supt. John A. Freitas for the many months of hard labor that went into winning the town's approval for our new school. They may console themselves with the thought that nothing worthwhile is easily won. Fortunate are the classes to follow 1963---and good luck and best wishes to them. Class of 1963 'Me 544445 Emu! What does this mean? It means the termination of many close associations which, for some, have extended over a period of twelve years. It is the beginning of a new phase of life in the area of your choice. Here is the proving ground for which the school has tried to prepare you. Now it is your turn to carry the ball. Your record as a class is indicative of a bright future. You have written a fine record in the many facets of high school life. For this the Faculty wishes to commend you. You go forth with our best wishes. Our interest in you will not end with your graduation, We hope that you will return often to visit us and that you will keep us posted on your future endeavors. As we, the Class of 1963, were the last students of Miss Young we feel particularly grateful to her for her un- selfish efforts in our behalf. Whenever our class wished for something, Miss Young made it come true. For this, we could never thank her enough. If the reward for self-denial for the benefit of others is happiness, Miss Young will be eternally happy. The memory of Miss Young will long serve as a guide, a reminder, and a motive for each and every student in the class of '63, May God bless you Mrs. Richardson. Q n sit! 5 dams FIRST ROW: S. Despite the lack of experienced players, a new coach, and crippling injuries, our boys still came through with flying colors and a 4-4 record. With two outstanding seniors, Doug Falzarano and Bob Hackett, out with injuries HHS won the opening game with Woodstock 13-0 and a 26-6 victory over Middlebury the following week. Then came losses to Springfield and Rutland. HHS then came through with an upset by dumping favored Bennington 12-7. Despite the 14-0 loss to Brattleboro, second ranked team in Vermont, the boys covered themselves with glory by holding the Bratts scoreless for three periods. In the final game our team lost a heart-breaker to Windsor 12-6, as Windsor scored the final touchdown with only 80 seconds to go. Much credit for the 4-4 season goes to the outstanding group of seniors: Co-Captains Dan Aher and Dick Cross, Chris Stone, Jerry Abbott, Rod Akers, and Ray Stanford. Dan Aher was selected to the All-State first team, the first Hartford player to be so honored in many years. Honorable mention went to Chris Stone, ,Terry Abbott, and Dick Cross. Congratulations to our new coach, Mr. McCanna, for a job well done. .1 ,M Q, SM, ,,...,, -W ,p w 'W afwdtey? FIRST ROW: Mgr. D. Spencer, D. Clay, D. Aher, I. Abbott, R. Stanford, D. Losing seven of its first eight games the outlook for a good season was dismal. As the season progressed and the boys got more experience, they began to exhibit much better team effort and finished the latter part of the schedule with a '7-4 record. Highlights of the season were victories over Bellows Falls and Woodstock, both going on to the Vermont State Finals at Middlebury. Our team victory over Lebanon by 14 points after losing to them at home was an- other fine win. The seniors who will be greatly missed next year are Captain Jerry Abbott, Dan Aher, Dennis Clay, Doug Falzarano and Ray Stanford. Dan Aher was awarded the Bob Hanley trophy for his fine play throughout the season. Captain-elect Gary Smith was selected on the Twin State All- Star team. Next year Hartford High will play an Independent Class L schedule as it withdraws from the Twin State League. The Junior Varsity had a rough season with a 5- 14 record. f 3 , ? fi .1 5 W if fi gil? 1, 5 as gf' 154-1 5 W. M, E-'. awdtqg SEATED: D. Briggs, J. Clark, S. Ratcliffe, Capt. P. Learmonth, E. Several exciting games were played. Perhaps the most sensational one of the year was our 27-26 victory over Stevens High from Claremont, N. H. That game was won in the final fraction of a second as Dianne Briggs' winning basket went through the hoop as the horn was blowing the end of the game. Senior Pat Learmonth was the team high scorer with 112 points in 13 games. Next year promises to be a good one. With the exception of one senior, the entire team will be returning. A number of the girls should be very bright prospects for next year's squad. The Junior Varsity record was 3- 7-1. This team set some kind of a scoring record in reverse with its 4-2 victory over Windsor. Freshmen and sophomores made up the Junior Varsity and prospects are good for next year. ?ceZal'Z1 FIRST ROW: C. Alexander, M. Roberts, J. Young, J. Bomhower, P. Spaulding, P. McQuire. SECOND ROW: L. Every game played was a close contest and in three of the games the result was uncertain until the last minute. Perhaps the most exciting game of the year was the 0-O tie with Hanover on our own field. Fairly good crowds gathered at all g3.I1'lCS. The captains for the year were three seniors: Sue Rising, Cheryl Chase, and Barbara Hazen. All played with a spirit of victory and deserve much credit for their sportsmanship. Next year's prospects look fairly good. The Junior Varsity lost their first game to Hanover 3-O, but de feated them in a return game 2-1. I. Bomhower, C. Alexander, and S. We placed third in the Connecticut Valley League standing. Coach Dyer got a headache early in the season when his outstanding pitcher, Doug Falzarano, came up with an early season sore arm and was unable to do any hurling from that time on. Fortunately a discovery was made in sophomore, Larry Batchelder, who turned out an outstanding performance at a time when it was sorely needed. The two outstanding victories of the season were registered over Springfield and Bellows Falls. Both Batchelder and Falzarano will be back for service for the '1963 season.
